  • ENVIROMENT AND HEALTH

The carbon equivalent of 200 million barrels of oil are burnt each day to support the

    Planets growing population.

Carbon dioxide build up in the atmosphere has reached levels that are about 30 percent

higher than at any time in the last 170 years.

The Thermosphere, an upper layer of Earths atmosphere which does the role of protecting the planet by blocking harmful ultraviolet rays, normally expands and

contracts rhythmically with the solar activities.

As green house gases increase, it has a cooling effect at such high altitudes, which

further contracts the thermosphere, causing the Thermosphere to collapse.

Environmental damage and health threats due to air, water and food chain pollution

have reached every area of the planet.

Continued dependence on fossil fuels is detrimental to public health and is extremely

dangerous taking us to a point of no return.

Worlds largest killers are not Cancer, Heart Disease or AIDS, it is simply the Air we

breath, the Water we drink and the Food we eat, all of which are highly polluted.

  • THE NEED

Today's biggest problem is the handling and disposal of

waste. All Bio degradable waste can be processed by Bio

Methanisation Process and the output generated is High

Purity Bio Gas and Bio Fertiliser.

The process of transforming waste to energy is not a

new idea. The first Bio Digester was installed in India,

since then a lot of Research has gone into the production

of Bio Gas. At CEICO we use the latest technology and

every plant is custom designed to the specific need and

    requirement of the customer.

  • BIOMASS / BIO DEGRADABLE WASTE

Biomass is biological material that can be used as a renewable energy source. Processing

biomass using anaerobic digestion generates biogas which is composed of approximately 60%

methane. This is further purified up to 90 - 98% depending on the requirement.

    Agricultural

Manure from dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, and waste from crops

Municipal Waste and Water Treatment Plant Bio solids

Segregated Bio Waste from MSW & Bio Solids from Sewerage treatment

    plants.

    Alcohol/Ethanol

Press mud, spent grain, spent wash, etc.

    Food

Sacred flowers, left over prasadam, and deity wash water.

Waste from food manufacturing and processing industry, Waste from kitchen

and table from hotels, hostels, homes etc.

    BIO DEGRADABLE WASTE

  • BIOGAS

Biogas typically refers to a mixture of gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the

    absence of oxygen.

Biogas can be produced from regionally available raw materials such as recycled waste. It is a

renewable energy source and in many cases exerts a very small carbon footprint.

Biogas is produced by anaerobic digestion with anaerobic bacteria or fermentation of

biodegradable materials such as manure, sewage, municipal waste, green waste, plant material,

    and crops.

Biogas is primarily Methane(CH 4) and Carbon Dioxide

(CO 2) and may have small amounts of Hydrogen

Sulphide (H 2S), Moisture and Siloxanes.

The gases Methane, Hydrogen, and Carbon Monoxide

(CO) can be combusted or oxidized with oxygen. This

energy release allows biogas to be used as a fuel; it

can be used for any heating purpose, such as cooking,

it can also be used in gas engines to produce electricity

    and heat.

Biogas can be compressed and used to power motor

vehicles. Biogas can be cleaned and upgraded to

natural gas standards when it becomes Bio Methane

  • Anaerobic Digestion

Anaerobic decomposition is a complex process. It occurs in three basic

stages as the result of the activity of a variety of microorganisms. .

The typical biogas system consists of the following

    components:

    Waste processing.

    Anaerobic Digester.

    Effluent storage.

    Gas handling.

    Gas utilization.

Hydrolysis: large polymers are broken down by enzymes.

Acetogenesis: Breakdown of volatile acids to acetate and hydrogen.

Methanogenesis: Acetate, formaldehyde, hydrogen and carbon

dioxide are converted to methane and water.

    Sludge or Effluent

The material drawn from the anaerobic digester is called sludge, or

effluent. It is rich in nutrients (ammonia, phosphorus, potassium, and

more than a dozen trace elements) and is an excellent soil

conditioner. It can also be used as a livestock or fish feed additive

    when dried.

  • LIMITATIONS OF CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM

Conventional Systems using Tank in Tank Digesters

    Low efficiency

Reduced Biogas production due to various factors.

    High maintenance

Long term sedimentation issues cause the plant failure.

    Environmental Damage

Space between the tanks cause Biogas to be released

in the air causing Green House Gas emission damaging

    the environment

    Release of obnoxious odor

Due to the design these plants release obnoxious odor causing problems to people living

    in the proximity.

    Health Hazards

As there is odor and exposed digestrate this creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes and

germs. Causing operational and local health hazards.

    BIOGAS PLANT IN KOCHI

  • No Temperature control

Low Biogas production at lower temperatures, Temperature shock due to sudden change in

    temperature.

    No PH control

Plant PH if not monitored can make the plant swing to Acidic of Alkaline conditions causing

    plant failure.

    No Mixing

Improper or no mixing of the digestrate caused crust formations and accumulation of

Volatile Fatty Acids, these conditions lead to reduced production, foaming and ultimate

    plant failure.

    No Purification

Biogas produced has many impurities such as Carbon Dioxide,

Hydrogen Sulphide, Ammonia, etc. that are harmful to humans

    in close proximity.

    BIOGAS STORAGE

  • KADAPPA (AP) PROJECT

  • DISEASE

As Anaerobic Digestion relies on a mixed population of bacteria of largely known

/ unknown origin, but often including animal wastes, to carry out the waste

treatment process care should be taken to avoid contact with the digester

contents and to wash thoroughly after working around the digester (and

    particularly before eating or drinking).

The digestion process does reduce the number of pathogenic (disease causing)

bacteria, but the biological nature of the process needs to be kept in mind.

    ASPHYXIATION

Biogas consists mainly of CH4 and CO2, with low levels of H2S and other gases.

Each of these components has its own problems, as well as displacing oxygen.

CH4 - lighter than air (will collect in roof spaces etc).

CO2 - heavier than air (will collect in sumps etc), slightly elevated levels affect

respiration rate, higher levels displace oxygen as well.

H2S - (rotten egg gas) destroys olefactory (smelling) tissues and lungs, becomes

odourless as the level increases to dangerous and fatal.

Adequate ventilation, suitable precautions and adequate protective equipment

are recommended to minimise the dangers associated with biogas, making it a

good servant rather than a bad master.

    SAFETY AND PRECAUTION

  • COROSION

Crude biogas is highly corrosive if used directly. This leads to high cost on replacements and

    maintenance in the ling run.

It is recommended that the Biogas be purified to usable levels depending

    Upon the application.

    OPERATION AND MAINTAINANCE

Personnel handling the plant should be trained in the following aspects

Feeding feed needs to be segregated and only the right quantity to be feed as per the feeding programme. Over feeding will kill the plant, sudden increase or decrease of feed will

cause a Feed Shock and effect production.

Monitoring of Plant parameters PH and Temperature levels to be monitored to ensure the proper health of the plant, corrective steps should be taken if any variation is observed.

Biogas Handling, Storage and Usage. Production of Biogas is a continuous process and cannot be stopped as such the Biogas produced should be utilised or flared. Biogas lines

should be regularly checked for leakages.

Maintenance The plant area should be kept clean to prevent animals and rodents being attracted to the plant as they may cause damage to pipe lines and Biogas holders.
