Bocce was popularized by the Italians (many of us have seen Italians and French people playing in dusty pits), by way of the Romans and Greeks, and initially the Egyptians. Our courts are not dusty, they are on the Great Lawn. Usually there are two teams and the game starts by throwing out the jack, a small yellow ball similar to a billiard ball. That becomes the target. Then each player in turn throws a bocce ball (about grapefruit sized) aiming for the jack—to touch it or be closest to it. Teams usually consist of two people. As in golf croquet, it is quite OK to knock your opponents ball away from the jack. In order to keep all this pleasant we play in the morning in the summer and the afternoon in the winter. Dress is casual; white is no longer required for golf croquet and it never was for bocce. Remember your hat or sunscreen or possibly both. Note that if the temperature is above 80 degrees in the morning the games will be cancelled. For more information contact Rhonda Innes (golf croquet) or Ellen Herron (bocce). Or you can just show up!

Would you like to spend an hour of congenial competition on the Great Lawn? Your fellow Members have organized two low impact competitions—golf croquet on Tuesdays and bocce on Thursdays.

Golf croquet is genteel, usually polite, and not too serious. The tools are heavy fat balls, skinny wickets, and mallets wielded like pendulums. The similarity to a golf swing is hard to miss. We divide the people that show up into two teams and do our best to beat our opponents. The competition is serious. Where the rules allow, a ball in a good position might be knocked aside when the

opponent’s team has a turn. Despite the competition newcomers are always welcome and, if they wish, well-coached. Now we have four to six Members show up, but we can easily have twelve people playing at the same time.

Moving from Tuesday to Thursday let’s consider bocce—a kind of bowling.

Drink to Your Health!

Summer’s heat and humidity are a dangerous duo that can lead to dehydration, a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. As we age, our total body water decreases as does our thirst sensation. Dehydration can therefore happen much more quickly and more frequently in seniors.

Dehydration can causeFatigue. A major component of blood is water and a decrease makes your heart work harder. This makes everyday activities more difficult and can increase your chances of falling.

Confusion. The brain is about 78% water, so a water shortage to your brain can contribute to mental fogginess.

Urinary tract infections. Your kidneys need water to filter waste from the blood and excrete it in urine.

Headaches. These can be caused by stress, which is a result of the inability to cope with high temperatures.

Joint pain and muscle cramps. Fluids act as natural lubricants that minimize friction between bones. Fluid loss can also lead to cramping of the muscles.

Decreased immunity. Water is the major component of lymphatic fluid, which removes toxins and carries immune cells to fight infections and disease.

Tips for maintaining proper hydration Set a daily fluid goal. Individual needs vary but a minimum of six to eight 8 oz. glasses can be a starting point.

Do not judge your need for fluids by thirst; try to drink even if you are not thirsty.

Hydrate yourself properly BEFORE exercising and continue to drink water during and after your workout.

Increase your water intake by consuming lots of fruits and leafy green vegetables.

Avoid alcohol, which is a diuretic.

Carry a bottle of water when you are on the go, especially during the hot summer months.

Popcorn and a Movie—They Shall Not Grow OldMonday, July 15, 2pm Ballroom

Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage which is more than a 100-years old, Peter Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there. Driven by a personal interest in the First World War, Jackson set out to bring to life the day-to-day experience of its soldiers. After months immersed in the BBC and Imperial War Museums’ archives, narratives and strategies on how to tell this story began to emerge for Jackson. Using the voices of the men involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line; their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate; slept and formed friendships, as well what their lives were like away from the trenches during their periods of downtime.

Living with Loss: Grief Support with Mitzi QuintMonday, July 22, 1pm Classroom

The most adventurous among them took to the seas as freewheeling outlaws. In ships bearing names such as the Prophet Samuel, Queen Esther, and Shield of Abraham, they attacked and plundered the Spanish fleet while forming alliances with other European powers to ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding. Mary will also be talking about how Edward came to write the book and his experience of living on and off in Jamaica for 40 years. Books will be available for purchase, $15 each.

The Birds of Sanibelwith Herb CooperMonday, July 29, 3pm Ballroom

During the last 15 winters on Sanibel Island Herb Cooper has become an avid birder. One of the top ten birding sites in the U.S., this subtropical barrier island has been a magnet for shelling and birding

enthusiasts from across the globe for generations. A majority of the island is reserved for wildlife refuges, including the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The list of birds spotted on Sanibel Island is ever-evolving thanks to the protected environment that encourages natural habitats for year-round residents such as bald eagles, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, ospreys, plovers, herons, and more. Some 245 species and more than 180 varieties make their home on Sanibel for at least one season. Exotic species seen include the sora, clapper rail, red-breasted merganser, blue grosbeak, and the beautiful indigo bunting. Sandpipers, seagulls, terns and skimmers are also common throughout the year. Everyone is looking for the Roseate Spoonbill since Sanibel is one of the only birding sites where you can see them up close and personal. Come and enjoy a video of Herb’s photos of the birds of Sanibel.
