Aims

■ Toallowstudentstogainsomeunderstandingofwhatdisabledpeopleexperience.
NB:Youmayfindthatmanyoftheactivitiesdescribedbelowcanbeexploitedbetterinyourstudents’ownlanguageormothertongue,ifyouspeakit.Themothertongue,ifusedcarefullyasaresource,canfacilitateyourstudents’progressinEnglishandhelpthemtounderstandthecontextofthestory,thuspreparingthemtounderstanditbetterwhentheyreadit.
Pre-reading Activities
1 Tellstudentsthetitleofthebook(Amazing Young Sports People)andtellthemitisafactbook.Makesuretheyunderstandwhata‘factbook’consistsof.AskstudentsWhat famous young sports people do you know? What sports are they famous for?Writetheirsuggestionsontheboard.
2 AskstudentstolookatIllustration1(adiagramofthebuildingsinthefirstOlympicGames)andatExtract1,whichtellswhatthesebuildingsare.Workinginpairs,studentstalkaboutwhattheyhavelearnedfromtheillustrationandtheextractandthenfeedbacktothewholeclass.AskWhat do you know about the Olympic Games today? Is it the same as this?Teachanyrelevantvocabulary(e.g.events,stadium,pitch,coach,goalkeeper).
3 Workinginpairs,askstudentstolistsomeofthesportsthattakeplaceintheOlympicGames.NowaskthemtotrytothinkofanewsportfortheGamesbycombiningtwoormoreexistingsports.Theyshouldthinkabouthowthisnew sportisplayed(e.g.howmanyplayersthereareinateam).Thentheyshouldgivethesportaname.Forexample,asportcombiningswimmingandbasketballcouldbecalledAquaBasketorWaterBasketball.Feedbacktothewholeclassandvoteforthemostpopularsport.(NBStudentsarenotallowedtovotefortheirownsport.)
4 AskstudentstoreadExtracts2and3.NowaskthemtodoapieceofwritinginwhichtheyimaginethattheygototheOlympicGames,theParalympicGamesortheXGames.Askthemtoexplainwhichonetheywouldchooseandwhy.Thenstudentsthinkofthemselvesasathletesinoneofthegames.Whichsportwouldtheywanttocompetein?
5 AskstudentstoreadExtract4andlookatIllustration2(blindfootball).AskIs blind football easy to play? What does a blind footballer need to play a game of football?Suggestedanswers:ahardfootballpitch–notgrass –sotheycanheartheball,goalkeeperswhocansee,coacheswhocanseesotheycanshoutandhelptheplayers,fanswhoarequietsotheplayerscanheartheball,asmallpitchwithawallaroundit.
6 AskstudentstolookatIllustration3(TravisPastranadoingatrickonhismotorbikeintheX Games).Studentsthinkofacaptionforthepictureandtheythenvotefortheirfavouritecaption.(NB Studentsarenotallowedtovotefortheirown caption.)
7 AskstudentstoreadExtracts5and6,whichareabouttwoyoungsportspeople.Studentsnowthinkofmoreinformationaboutthetwogirls(e.g.SonjaHenie’sfavouritefood,likesandfavouriteplace).Theycouldalsothinkoffavouritebooks,favouritefilms,pets,placestogoonholidayornumbersofbrothersandsisters.Feedbacktothewholeclass.
8 Askstudentstoinventanathleteandtowriteaprofileforthem.Sharethesewiththewholeclass.
9 AskstudentstoreadExtracts7and8.Workinginpairs,studentsdiscussthesimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenthetwogirlsandtheirsports(teachsimilaritiesanddifferences,ifnecessary).Theythenwritetwolists,onewiththeheading‘Similarities’andtheother‘Differences’.Feedbacktothewholeclass.

HowdidAyumibecomeachampion?Itwasn’teasy.Shewenttotheskateparkafterschooleverydayandshepractisedforthreeorfourhours.Afterthisshewentbacktoherhouse,tiredandhungry.Shehaddinner,didherhomeworkandwenttobed.
