CDC COMMUNITY THEATRE

HISTORY

The Cranford Dramatic Club is the longest continuously producing community theatre in the state of New Jersey. A small group of townspeople wanted to share good the-atre with family, friends and neighbors. The first meeting took place in October 1919 and the CDC has produced shows in Cranford every year since then.

The first performance took place in Trinity Episcopal Church’s Sherlock Hall. In the 1920s, they moved to the now-defunct Cranford Casino. After World War II, many of the shows were produced at Cranford High School. In the mid 1950s, a group of CDC members decided to build their own theatre. With their names listed on the mort-gage guarantee, they began what would become the CDC Theatre, officially opening to the public in 1957.

In 1992, the theatre underwent renovation--a new front facade, new chairs, modern-ized plumbing and storage areas. In 2003, the lighting system was overhauled, add-ing a dropped ceiling, lighting instruments, and a computer-operated diming system. Fundraising efforts allowed for the addition of a handicapped-accessible bathroom in the main lobby.

The CDC is thrilled to be celebrating it’s 90th birthday with you! This season’s offer-ings include The Compleat Wrks of Shkspr, (abridged); Alice in Wonderland, a Theatre for Young Audiences’ musical, the Tony-award winning contemporary musical, The Light in the Piazza, and the recent Broadway hit, The Wedding Singer!

It seems to me that the thing that makes theatre worthwhile is the fact that it attracts so many people with

ideas who are constantly trying to share them with the pub-lic. Real art is illumination.

SYNOPSIS The Light in the Piazza began life as a novella, written by Elizabeth Spencer, a woman from the American South who had moved to, lived in and loved Italy. The Light in the Piazza was first pub-lished in The New Yorker magazine in 1960, and was later published as a short novel. Composer Adam Guettel discovered the story on the recommendation of his mother, composer Mary Rodg-ers. He told her he was looking for a love story that was not cynical, ironic or simplistic.

The Light in the Piazza takes place in Italy in the summer of 1953. Margaret Johnson the wife of an American businessman, is touring the Tuscan countryside with her daughter, Clara. While sight-seeing, Clara, a beautiful, surprisingly childish, young woman loses her hat in a sudden gust. As if guided by an unseen hand, the hat is caught by Fabrizio Naccarelli, a handsome Florentine, who returns it to Clara. This brief episode, charged with coincidence and fate, sparks an immediate and intense romance between Clara and Fabrizio. Margaret, extremely protective of her daughter, attempts to keep Clara and Fabrizio apart. As The Light in the Piazza unfolds, a secret is revealed; in addition to the cultural differences between the young lovers, Clara is not quite all that she ap-pears. Unable to suppress the truth about her daughter, Margaret is forced to reconsider not only Clara’s future, but her own hopes as well.

The Light in the Piazza tells an eternal story, totally timely and utterly timeless. It is a story about love in all its manifestations - new love, longtime love and the profound love between parents and children.
