CHAPTER 25
IPv6
This chapter provides information and commands concerning the following topics:
• Assigning IPv6 addresses to interfaces
• IPv6 and RIPng
• Conguration example: IPv6 RIP
• IPv6 tunnels: manual overlay tunnel
• Static routes in IPv6
• Floating static routes in IPv6
• Verifying and troubleshooting IPv6
• IPv6 ping
NOTE: For an excellent overview of IPv6, I strongly recommend you readJeff Doyle’s book, Routing TCP/IP Volume I , Second Edition.
Assigning IPv6 Addresses to Interfaces
Router(config)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 uuuu nnnn ii ii cccc aaaa ssss tt tt ---- rrrr oooo uuuu tt tt ii ii nnnn gggg
Enables the forwarding of IPV6 unicastdatagrams globally on the router.
Router(config)#ii ii nnnn tt tt eeee rrrr ffff aaaa cccc eeee ffff aaaa ssss tt tt eeee tt tt hhhh eeee rrrr nnnn eeee tt tt 0000 // // 0000
Moves to interface conguration mode.
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 ee ee nnnn aaaa bbbb ll ll eeee Automatically congures an IPv6link-local address on the interface andenables IPv6 processing on the interface.
NOTE : The link-local address that theipv6 enable command congures canbe used only to communicate withnodes on the same link.
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 aa aa dddd dddd rrrr eeee ssss ssss 3333 0000 0000 0000 :: :: :: :: 1111 // // 6666 4444
Congures a global IPv6 address on theinterface and enables IPv6 processingon the interface.
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 aa aa dddd dddd rrrr eeee ssss ssss 2222 0000 0000 1111 :: :: dddd bbbb 8888 :: :: 0000 :: :: 1111 :: :: :: :: // // 6666 4444 ee ee uuuu ii ii ---- 6666 4444

IPv6 and RIPng
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 aa aa dddd dddd rrrr eeee ssss ssss ffff eeee 8888 0000 :: :: :: :: 2222 6666 0000 :: :: 3333 eeee ffff ffff :: :: ffff eeee 4444 7777 :: :: 1111 5555 3333 0000 // // 6666 4444 ll ll ii ii nnnn kkkk ----
ll ll oooo cccc aaaa ll ll
Congures a specic link-local IPv6address on the interface instead of the onethat is automatically congured whenIPv6 is enabled on the interface.
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 uuuu nnnn nnnn uuuu mmmmbbbb eeee rrrr eeee dddd type/number
Species an unnumbered interface andenables IPv6 processing on the interface.The global IPv6 address of the interfacespecied by type/number will be used asthe source address.
Router(config)#ii ii nnnn tt tt eeee rrrr ffff aaaa cccc eeee ssss eeee rrrr ii ii aaaa ll ll 0000 // // 0000
Moves to interface conguration mode.
Router(config-if)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 rr rr ii ii pppp tt tt oooo wwwweeee rrrr eeee nnnn aaaa bbbb ll ll eeee
Creates the RIPng process named towerand enables RIPng on the interface.
NOTE : Unlike RIPv1 and RIPv2, whereyou needed to create the RIP routingprocess with the router rip command andthen use the network command to specifythe interfaces on which to run RIP, theRIPng process is created automaticallywhen RIPng is enabled on an interfacewith the ipv6 rip name enable command.
NOTE : Cisco IOS Softwareautomatically creates an entry in theconguration for the RIPng routingprocess when it is enabled on an interface.
NOTE : The ipv6 router rip process-name command is still needed whenconguring optional features of RIPng.
Router(config)#ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 rr rr oooo uuuu tt tt eeee rrrr rr rr ii ii pppp tt tt oooo wwwweeee rrrr
Creates the RIPng process named tower ifit has not already been created, and movesto router conguration mode
Router(config-router)#mm mmaaaa xxxx ii ii mmmmuuuu mmmm----pppp aaaa tt tt hhhh ssss 2222
Denes the maximum number of equal-cost routes that RIPng can support.
NOTE : The number of paths that can beused is a number from 1 to 64. The defaultis 4.

Static Routes in IPv6
NOTE: Although not part of the CCNA exam objectives, the concept of staticroutes in IPv6 is one that network administrators dealing with IPv6 need to becomfortable with.

Verifying and Troubleshooting IPv6 245
Floating Static Routes in IPv6
NOTE: Although not part of the CCNA exam objectives, the concept of oatingstatic routes in IPv6 is one that network administrators dealing with IPv6 need tobe comfortable with.
To create a static route with an administrative distance (AD) set to 200, as opposed thedefault AD of one (1), enter the following command, for example:
Austin(config)# ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 rr rr oooo uuuu tttt eeee 2222 0000 0000 1111 :::: dddd bbbb 8888 :::: cccc 1111 8888 :::: 3333 :: :: :: :: // // 6666 4444 ff ff aaaa ssss tt tt eeee tt tt hhhh eeee rrrr nnnn eeee tt tt 0000 // // 0000 2222 0000 0000
The default ADs used in IPv4 are the same for IPv6.
Verifying and Troubleshooting IPv6
CAUTION: Using the debug command may severely affect router performanceand might even cause the router to reboot. Always exercise caution when usingthe debug command. Do not leave debug on. Use it long enough to gatherneeded information, and then disable debugging with the undebug all command.
TIP: Send your debug output to a syslog server to ensure you have a copy of itin case your router is overloaded and needs to reboot.

IPv6 Ping
To diagnose basic network connectivity using IPv6 to the specied address, enter thefollowing command:
Router#pp pp iiii nnnn gggg ii ii pppp vvvv 6666 2222 0000 0000 1111 :::: dddd bbbb 8888 :::: :: :: 3333 // // 6666 4444
The following characters can be displayed as output when using PING in IPv6.
Character Description
! Each exclamation point indicates receipt of a reply.. Each period indicates that the network server timed out while waiting for
a reply.
? Unknown error.
@ Unreachable for unknown reason.
A Administratively unreachable. Usually means that an access control list(ACL) is blocking trafc.
B Packet too big.
