    Information Required

Rating - Information may be found onthe nameplate of the motor etc.

Service Factor - When selecting acoupling it is important to consider thecharacteristics of the drive and drivenequipment. A figure known as the ServiceFactor has been calculated based on anaverage of a wide range of applications. This can be used as a guide in the selectionprocess and is displayed in Table 1 onpage 2.

Size - In making the selection from thefollowing product groups which is mostsuited to the application, select a sizeequal to or, higher than the ratingcalculated. Particular attention should bemade to bore sizes and guidance for thisis in the Table related to Max Bore Sizes.

Speed - Ensure that the speed iscompatible.

Should full information not be suppliedto Bibby Transmissions at the time ofordering it will be the responsibility ofthe customer to ensure that the couplinghas been correctly selected.

As our policy is one of continualimprovement, this specification is not tobe regarded as binding in any way, and issubject to alteration without notice.Certified drawings are available onrequest.

    Series 2000H and Series 2000V

    High Performance

The Bibby Transmissions Series 2000 TaperGrid Coupling continues that tradition. The tapered grid is made from hightensile alloy steel which is carefullyformed to the grid shape beforehardening and tempering undercontrolled conditions. The grid surface isthen shot-peened. This process leaves thegrid spring with a residually stressedsurface layer which is in compression andwhich impedes the propagation of cracks.Since nearly all fatigue and stresscorrosion failures originate at the surfaceof a part, the layer of compressive stressinduced by shot-peening produces adramatic increase in the working life andfatigue strength of the grid. Thistechnological improvement inmanufacturing process coupled withprecise monitoring of raw materialspecification and control of trapezoidalshape, permits Bibby Transmissions tooffer state of the art grid springs of highperformance and reliability.

    Scientific Design

The hub is precision manufactured fromhigh quality materials, with the hub toothprofile scientifically designed to permit

progressive loading under torsional shockconditions. The combination of taperedgrid and precision manufactured hubprovides a high performance transmissionarrangement which is easily assembled, extremely capable of cushioning shockloads tolerant of drive misalignments.

    Long Life

While the coupling is designed for longlife under arduous conditions, maintenance and taper grid replacementcan be performed quickly and easilywithout the need to move and realignconnected equipment.

Two cover design options are available inthe Bibby Transmissions Series 2000 rangeof couplings. Both designs have beencarefully engineered to match the qualitystandards of the key components and toprovide a shaft coupling which is highlyreliable and easy to install.

Recommended Fits between Shafts and Hubs

Coupling bore tolerances for sizes up toand including 2090T can be specified tosuit a transition fit with the shaft. Inthese instances axial restraint of the hub

should be provided by set screws. Relativesizes and positions are given in thefollowing table.

For sizes above 2090T or where interferencefits are preferred for smaller couplingsizes, bore tolerances should provide aninterference fit between shaft and hub of0.0002 to 0.0007mm per mm of diameter, consistent with AGMA standards.

Dr James Bibby originally invented theResilient Coupling in 1917 and the 2000series is the latest version of this wellaccepted product. This Bibby Transmissionsproduct has become universally acceptedwhere reliable protection against shaftmisalignment and vibration is desirable.

Since those early days refinements indesign and material specifications havekept pace with advancing technology, achieving significant improvements inpower/weight ratios.

    Principle

    Accommodating Shaft Misalignmentand End-Float

The Series 2000 will accommodatecombinations of misalignments present atset-up or occurring during machinedisplacement, settlement etc.

    Effectiveness of Torsional Damping

As the Series 2000 coupling transmitstorque, the flexing of the tapered gridspring de-tunes vibrations and cushionsshock loads.

This unique characteristic is due to thetorsional flexibility of the coupling beingproportionate to the unsupported lengthof each flexible grid rung. Since thisvaries with every variation of torque, a

powerful de-tuning action is producedwhich continuously alters the naturalfrequency of the system and prevents abuild-up of resonance in the system. Theresultant reduction in peak loadingprotects and extends the life of thetransmission equipment.

    Versatile Design

Both 2000H and 2000V couplings featureidentical hubs and grid springs, thedifferent cover styles endowing the unitswith great versatility - one is horizontallysplit, the other is vertically split.

All coupling components are designed tobe interchangeable with other populartaper grid couplings available in NorthAmerica.

The stock coupling can be used verticallyor horizontally without modification.

    Easy Installation and Maintenance

The grid springs are easily installed byhand or with a soft mallet. The coverfasteners can be tightened with standardwrenches. Every Bibby TransmissionsSeries 2000 coupling is delivered withdetailed installation instructions.

Periodic lubrication of the coupling isrequired and each cover half is suppliedwith standard plugs which can be easilyremoved for re-lubrication. Extendedlubrication periods and enhancedcoupling life can be achieved by usinghigh performance lubricants referred toin the maintenance instructions.

    Selection Examples

    1. Nominal Torque (simple selection method)

A 4 cyl. diesel engine driven generator setof 280 kW runs at 1000 rpm. Output andinput shafts are identical being 90mm diax 130mm long. A Bibby type TH,horizontally split, coupling is specified forease of assembly.

    - The service factor from page 2 must beincludedTable 1 = 1.0: Additional factor (engine)from Table 1A = 1.0: Total = 2.0

    - From Table 1A (SF = 2): equivalent: kW = 560

    - From Table on page 6, coupling totransmit 560 kW @ 1000 rpm = 2100

    - From Table on page 6, allowable speedfor 2100T = 2440 rpm Max bore andoverall dimensions are satisfactory.

    2. Nominal Torque (formula method)

An electric motor of 300 kW is to becoupled to drive a rotary screwcompressor at 1000 rpm. Motor shaft is85mm dia x 110mm long. Compressorshaft 75mm x 100mm long. A Bibby typeTV, vertically split, coupling is required.

    - From Table 1 service factor = 1.0.Calculate torque:-Nm = Transmitted kW x SF x (9550/rpm) = 300 x 1 x (9550/1000) 2867 Nm.

    - From the table on page 7, coupling2090 has rating in excess of required torque. Max rpm = 4000; Max bore 95mm; bore length 98.4mmmake the 2090 selection satisfactory.

    3. Peak Torque (formula method)*

An extruder drive running at 300 rpm hasa known peak torque of 11000 Nm. Theconnected shafts are each 120mm dia x160mm long. Select a Bibby type TH,horizontally split, coupling to suit theknown peak unidirectional torque of 11000Nm. From the table on page 6, coupling2120 has torque exceeding calculatedpeak torque. Coupling max rpm is 2025.Max bore 137mm is greater than shaftdiameter. Overall length is satisfactory.

*1. The system peak torque is themaximum load created by the drivingor driven equipment.

    2. Occasional peak torques of twice thecatalogue rating can be accommodatedproviding they occur less than 1000times during the life of the coupling.

    Series II Gear Couplings

The standard range of Bibbygear Series IIcouplings includes single and doubleengagement types, continuous sleeve, telescopic and rigid designs. Couplingssuitable for vertical, as well as horizontaloperation may be selected from this section.

Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings havebeen proved over many years of useinternationally, in all kinds of industrialenvironments. This reliability has beenachieved by our attention to detail indesign, applications expertise and stringentquality control.

The latest development of BibbyTransmissions Gear Couplings family, theBibbygear Series II, offers improvements, refinements and extensions to the range, further consolidating the Status of BibbyTransmissions at the forefront of GearCoupling design and manufacture.

Torque Control can be incorporated intoall Bibbygear Series II couplings. Aparticularly efficient method is tocombine the gear couplings with SETorque Limiting Modules, which provideimmediate disconnection of the drivewhen the torque in the drive systemexceeds these SE Torque Limiting SafetyModules pre-set values. Re-setting isquick and simple.

Shear pins can also be incorporated withgear coupling assemblies to provideoverload protection.

Brake Drum and Brake Disc designs canbe supplied if required.

Other special couplings include assemblieswhich will accommodate HighMisalignment; Bibby Transmissions alsosupply Disengaging types and Insulatedgear couplings.

To ensure the gear couplings meet yourmost exacting requirements, pleasediscuss the specification and design withBibby Transmissions.

    Spares and Replacements

    Increased bore capacities

A major benefit of the Bibbygear Series IIGear Coupling is the considerableincrease in maximum bore capacities thatcan now be offered. It should be noted, however, that the maximum boresspecified throughout this publication arebased on keyways to BS 4235. Shouldalternative keyways or Imperial Standardsbe required, allowance needs to be madeto ensure that the strength of thecoupling hub is not compromised.

    High torque capacity/weight ratio

By optimizing the pitch circle diameter ofthe gear teeth and incorporatingcarefully chosen material specifications,Bibby Transmissions Gear Couplings offera high torque capacity to weight ratioresulting in lower loads on driving anddriven shafts.

    Crowned hub teeth

Advanced CAD analysis, combined withmany years of applications experience, has enabled our designers to furtherrefine the tooth form of BibbyTransmissions Gear Couplings in order toensure maximum contact at the strongestpart of the tooth. Hub teeth areengineered with tooth form crowned onthree surfaces: tip, flank and root. A highdegree of shaft misalignment can beaccommodated.

Some coupling sizes also feature longsleeve teeth as standard. This allowsgreater axial movement with standardcomponents.

    Extended range

Bibby Transmissions can supply gearcouplings in various forms. Most standardcouplings are fully detailed in thefollowing pages. However, certainmodifications are available which are notdetailed. These include limited end float, insulated, integrated shear pins, torquecontrol, brake drums and brake discs.

The long established reputation of BibbyTransmissions Gear Couplings nowextends to include continuous sleeve, telescopic and rigid designs, and borecapacities up to 20 inches.

    Ease of assembly

Bibbygear Series II Gear Couplingsincorporate exposed bolts and captivenuts for ease of assembly. Careful designhas resulted in a space efficient boltinstallation which enables the couplingsto offer increased bore capacities whilstensuring sufficient hub/bore ratio to cateradequately to the transmitted torque. Inthis manner the most compact couplinginstallation for the required power ratingis achieved.

    Fully interchangeable

The Series II Gear Couplings observe theAGMA standard flange dimensions. Thisresults in a half-for-halfinterchangeability with other northAmerican manufacturers.

    Longer hubs

The advanced design of these BibbygearSeries II Couplings permits theincorporation of longer hubs, for thoseinstances where greater shaft/hub contactis required or where mill motors are thedriving medium.

    Standard and special materials

The high specification gear couplings inthe Bibbygear Series II range aremanufactured from high quality carbonsteels as standard.

To suit specific applications BibbyTransmissions can supply gear couplings ina variety of specialised materials.

Bibbygear Series II Couplings are able towithstand a wide temperature range.

The maximum operating limit is125C /257F due to the specific seals andlubricant used in the standard coupling,However, by selective changes to materialthis can be increased.

Minimum temperatures are limited by theapplication and the degree of shockloading that may occur.

Full details of the anticipated workingtemperature range should be supplied toenable Bibby Transmissions engineers toadvise.

    Versatility

The standard range of gear couplingsincludes a number which are suitable formounting vertically as well ashorizontally.

To vary the shaft end gap and controllimited end float, one or both hubs canbe reversed. To facilitate this feature thehub diameters on either side of the teethare identical.

Bibbygear Series II couplings can becombined with Bibbigard Torque LimitingModules. These self-contained assembliesare fitted between two halves of astandard coupling. Full details will besupplied on request.

    Special manufacture

Bibby Transmissions are able to supplycomponents such as hubs and sleeves, andcomplete Gear Coupling assemblies, specially manufactured to suit specificapplications.

There are circumstances in which thisprovides a more cost-effective method ofsolving specific application requirements. Please consult a member of our Sales staffto discuss your individual application.

Most standard couplings can also bestock-altered to customers requirements

This includes parallel or taper boring andkeywaying, puller holes, shortened hubsetc. These changes are available withminimal increases in costs or lead times.

    Series II Gear Couplings

    Application

Couplings with standard hub lengthsrequire fitting with keys through the fullhub length, and an interference fit onshaft is necessary particularly when thecoupling is transmitting the maximumrated power. Unless otherwise specified, these hubs would be bored to give aninterference of between 0.0002 and0.0007mm per millimetre of borediameter, consistent with AGMAstandards.

Couplings with extended hub lengths aregenerally intended for use wheretransition fits on shafts are preferred, andunless otherwise specified, such couplingswould be bored to H7 tolerances. In theseinstances axial restraint of the hub shouldbe provided by set screws.

Couplings transmitting the maximumrated capacity, particularly whererelatively small shafts are being used, often require 2 keys. This is more relevantwith larger sizes of couplings and, if indoubt, full details should be supplied toallow Bibby Transmissions engineers toadvise.

For all couplings, maximum bores are foruniformly loaded drives only, usingrectangular parallel keys toBS 4235 Part 1: 1972, or DIN 6885, sheet 1, 1968. Taper and Square keysshould not be used with a hub to boreratio of less than 1.5 : 1.

    Misalignment

Bibbygear Series II Double EngagementGear Couplings are designed toaccommodate parallel and angularmisalignment and axial movement asillustrated above.

Single engagement couplingsaccommodate only angular misalignmentand axial movement.

Limited End Float couplings can also beprovided.

While some sizes of Bibbygear Series IIGear Couplings are capable of staticmisalignment of up to 11/2 per gear meshit is recommended that all couplings bealigned, on initial installation, to thelimits contained in the Installation andMaintenance leaflet supplied with eachcoupling.

Care should be taken to ensure thatmisalignment during operation is kept toan absolute minimum, as excesses willcause wear of the product together withhigh loading on associated machinery. This will have a great influence on the lifeof the product.

    Selection Examples

These assemblies would normally besupplied as shown although couplings canbe reversed if a greater degree of paralleloffset is required. Installation as showngives the best combination of availablemaximum bores and ease of maintenance.

All floating shaft couplings can be modifiedfor vertical operation. This does not affectany external dimensions. If both connectingshafts are located, a thrust plate and button(see page 23) are fitted to the lowercoupling. The weight of the shaft andassociated hubs can be borne by the lowershaft. Extra plates and buttons may beneeded if the upper shaft is not self-supported.

Type FD Versions A, B, and C Sizes 10 - 70Double engagement couplings for horizontal shafts with capacity for axial movement

    Type FDA

Uses shortened hubs. This type is identicalto the FD but with a plate fitted toensure that movement is shared betweenthe two halves.

    Type FDB

Similar to version A except that the hubsare reversed. Sizes 10-30 use standardsleeves. Larger sizes have appropriatelylengthened teeth.

    Type FDC

Full length teeth in sleeves, special hubsand extended long boss with no shortboss.

Telescopic couplings are able toaccommodate movement of hubs relative toeach other while still transmitting the ratedcapacity. Couplings still accept parallel offsetand angular misalignment but to a limiteddegree.

The types illustrated are a selection of thosewhich can be offered. Should your axialrequirements exceed those specified, pleasesend details so that we can put forwardalternative proposals.

See page 15 for other dimensions. All dimensions shown are subject toconfirmation.
