Masters of Sex’s Caitlin FitzGerald doesn’t hold back when sharing her feel-good approach to healthy living
masters of sexairs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.
Fruits or veggies? veggies. I was a veg-etarian for a long time, so I’m one of those weirdos who actually likes vegetables. Raw, cooked: I’m an equal-opportunity eater.
Cat or dog? dog! Dog walking is great exercise.
Yoga or Pilates? Yoga. I try to do exercise that feels good and isn’t a punishment.
BONUS ROUND
Have you always been active?I wouldn’t say I was an athletic child. I was a theater kid, so I would do some dance for the school musical, and I sometimes went ice skating, but I was not on any sports teams.
your go-to workout:I do a lot of hiking now that I live in Los Angeles, which I really love. And I have a dog, so I take him out.
secret for staying HealtHy on tHe set:I drink a lot of water. The more I drink, the more energy I have.
How do you prepare for nude scenes?[Co-star] Lizzy Caplan gave me the best advice last season before I had to get naked for a scene. She said, “The thing is, you’ll never be ‘ready’ for it.” We, as women, spend so much time battling
ourselves to live up to some idea of perfection that we have in our heads. To me, it matters more that I’m real than perfect. I read this amazing article about how Victorian women in their corsets were somehow more liberated than we are today, because they just strapped the corset on. Now, we’re expected to [be equally shapely] without a corset!
do you Have a favorite snack?Peanut butter is a go-to for me.
How to revive wHen your energy’s flagging: I’m a coffee addict, so that’s my big vice on the set, but I’ve started meditating. That helps me sometimes. If I have a break, I’ll go off and meditate somewhere quiet and it wakes me up.
n Showtime’s Golden Globe-winning period drama Masters of Sex, actress Caitlin FitzGerald’s character Libby, the wife of sex researcher William Masters, has struggled with intimacy, infer-tility and infidelity. Off camera, however, there’s one “I” word that FitzGerald definitely isn’t: inactive. Over the years, the native of
Camden, Maine, has developed healthy habits and a healthy attitude toward her body. Here, the 32-year-old actress shares the wellness philosophy that keeps her fit and naturally energized. — Michele Shapiro, with reporting by deanna barnert

Meditation is no longer just for
monks. In recent years, going
“within” to block internal thoughts
and external chatter has become
a daily habit for celebrities, politicians, cEos
and thought leaders alike. Stressed-out skep-
tics like anderson Cooper are discovering
the benefits of disconnecting; a self-professed
compulsive email checker, cooper surrendered
his laptop and smartphone for a weekend of
mindful contemplation last year when report-
ing on the trend for 60 Minutes.what’s the appeal? for starters, medita-
tion doesn’t cost a thing, and it’s easy to
do—really. “People think it’s more compli-
cated than it is,” says suze Yalof schwartz, a former fashion editor who opened unplug Meditation, a first-of-its-kind drop-in
meditation studio, in 2014. “you just close
your eyes and focus on your breath. If your
mind wanders, you gently bring it back to
your breath.”
when Schwartz joined the ranks of oprah Winfrey, arianna Huffington, House of lies star Kristen Bell and others who swear
by a daily meditation practice, she felt most
retreats required a major time or financial
commitment. “There were no places I could
go on my time, drop in, meditate and leave,”
she says. So Schwartz decided to open a
brentwood, calif., studio that offers guided
instruction in mantra-based and moving
meditation, guided imagery, mindfulness and
other of-the-moment practices.
“meditation is a work-in, not a workout,”
says Schwartz. “we spend so much time
on our bodies, but if your brain is weak, it
doesn’t matter how tight your body is. medi-
tation is a way to regain control of your brain
and gain perspective.” — michele Shapiro
