The College Captains Award was presented by the 2013 College Captains with this citation:

The Captain’s Award is an award that recognizes those, who you may say are the ‘quite achievers’, an individual who achieves things without putting himself in the spotlight, he is such a modest person . This particular student is what you would call an all round nice guy, an individual who is friends with everybody and anybody. Doesn’t discriminate and shows great respect to not only the peers that surround him but also the teachers and staff that work with him.

This particular student is the individual who holds open the door for everybody. He is always the first one in class, and is never late.

This student is hard working, a conscientious listener and always tries their hardest in everything.

He is always the first person to put his hand up to help, and is never the person to say ‘No” to anything.

This individual is genuinely kind hearted and always polite

Congratulations - Domenic Di Pasquale.

The Long Tan Award was presented by the Dunlop Cluster Coordinator after reading this citation:

The Long Tan Leadership Award recognises students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both their school and broader community and who display strong values such as “doing one’s best, respect for others and mateship”- the values that are integral to Australian society. These awards commemorate the 1966 battle of Long Tan when 108 man Company from the Australian Defence Force showed immense courage and heroism battling against a 2000 man force near the village of Long Tan Vietnam. We acknowledge the assistance of the Australian Government in funding the award

Today, we acknowledge and congratulate one Yr 12 Student who has demonstrated these skills, her involvement in fundraising activities, her humility, empathy when dealing with others. She has worked hard all year, not only at her studies but within the wider community, often despite her only personal difficulties.

The Peter Mastek Award was awarded by the VCAL staff with this citation:

The PETER MASTEK award honours the memory of a young man who was committed to his VCAL program, demonstrated outstanding skills in his vocation and was a respectful member of our team. Each year a VCAL student is recognised for displaying these competencies and qualities. The recipient for 2013 has made a positive contribution to our College community throughout these last two years. He has demonstrated leadership, consistent application to his work and has at all times been positive, polite and thoughtful. He has completed Senior VCAL this year, and made an extremely positive contribution to his project team. He has received great feedback from his work placement employer and achieved excellent results in his VETiS studies. He has been consistently supportive of VCAL and we wish this exceptional young man all the best in the future. Congratulations Dylan Zammit.

The Caltex All-Rounder Award winner for 2013 which recognises a student who has excelled in all aspects of College life, what we, here at CRC Sydenham try to enable all students to achieve.

What factors have we considered when looking at who would be worthy of this prestigious award? Academic – achieves scholastically

across a range of subjects. Attitude – willing to help others; makes

selfless contributions. Personal conduct – exemplary at all

times. Leadership – is a role model for other

students. Service – participates fully in a range of

College and community activities. Sport – represents the College without

necessarily being a champion. He has been an active participant in the Dunlop Cluster and College activities offering enthusiasm, energy and positivity. Throughout his two years at Catholic Regional College Sydenham, he has been involved in sporting events, in raising awareness and funds for social justice drives whilst maintaining high academic expectations for himself. This student epitomises the ‘all-rounder’ for these reasons but it is his unassuming non-judgemental and friendly attitude that make him an asset to our College and community Today, we acknowledge and congratulate Josh Zammit.

Each year at this time it is important that the Year 11 students are reminded that the term is far from over for them. In fact, the break over the Cup Day weekend, which includes the Monday and Cup Day on the Tuesday is our mid term point. We all need to be in agreement that this is not the end of the school year for students in Year 11; there is still much learning to be done, and work to be completed.

I wish to finish this week by once again wishing all of our Year 12 students well for the next few weeks. Rest assured that we are here to support you, please utilise the resources of your College and know that our hopes and prayers are with you.

With prayerful support and best wishes Class of 2013.

RECOGNISING STUDENTS Each fortnight in the College Newsletter, we recognise the achievements of many of our 'quiet achievers', those students who should be singled out for the wonderful work they are doing. This fortnight we recognise, celebrate and congratulate

Daniela

A pleasure to teach and a good friend to fellow students. Daniela is always on time, works well in class and has a genuine interest in all of her classes. She has applied for learning area captain and is well worth considering in this leadership role.

Carla

Santalucia

It is with pride that we c o n g r a t u l a t e C a r l a S a n t a l u c i a o n h e r appointment onto the College Leadership Team as Social Justice Captain for 2014. Carla has worked tirelessly this year to help provide better lives for our most marginalised society, always with a thirst for j u s t i c e a n d a compassionate attitude. She was a member of the Seeds of Justice, where she forged links with McAuley Care Community Services and later helped organise a fundraising dinner for the service. It was with great pleasure that Carla, along with some of her peers, handed over a cheque to the service last week for $4000. It is through her work that she has embodied the Cluster Values and for her efforts we say thank you and good luck for 2014!

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP DURING EXAM TIME?

At this time of year it is important for the parents of stu-dents completing VCE to be aware that one of the greatest stressors for the final year student is parent-student relations. According to Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg (2004) “ All parents, friends and relatives of a young person (completing VCE) should worry less about the quantity of work a student is engaging in and, instead, focus much more on their emotional wellbeing”. From a parent’s perspective, it is best to adopt the role of the supportive bystander, eagerly cheering from the side-lines but not being a major player and to adopt the motto “I’m here to help and offer any advice I can when you need it”. Parents can ensure that students stick to the basics: making sure that they eat right, get plenty of sleep and regular exercise. Positive reinforcement is the key. When you see a good effort is being made, it is useful to praise the student for it showing them that their dedication has been noticed. It is vital to maintain an open line of communication with your son/daughter; conversations reduce the likelihood of serious misun-derstandings, particularly during stressful times.

The statement below says a lot about helping to keep things in perspective during the exam period: “At times, we create in our schools, too much hype about the final years of school and we need to put this in the context of everything else. The VCE is an important year in [students’] lives, but it is not the most important year. It is just another stage in a student’s career, and the sun and the moon and the stars do not revolve around what happens at the end of it. Students have to be focused, disciplined and work hard, but they also have to understand that they are still a part of a unit of other people and should not be entering some kind of monastic existence that takes them away from their usual responsibilities.” (Howard Kelly - Former Chair of the Victorian Board of Studies).

Wellbeing

Wellbeing Report for Year 12 Parents

There is no doubt that the past weeks will have presented families with newfound chal-lenges and struggles. Furthermore, there is no denying that the coming few weeks will provide a combination of feverish excitement and crippling stress, it is paramount that both these elements are managed as they can have detrimental consequences to stu-dents.

It is important to note that not all stress is bad stress; a certain level of it is required for students to perform at an optimal level. However, panic and debilitating stress can be counterproductive and it is this that we must try to limit. In order to combat stress it is vi-tal that parents endeavor to maintain a normal household routine. Students must work to combat stress by pacing themselves and their study. Regular sleep must be priori-tized so that learning can be consolidated and revision can be successful. Parents re-quiring additional advice on how to manage stress should look at the tip sheets on Exam Stress found at www.parentline.com.au/parenting-information/tip-sheets/

Perhaps more concerning is the risk taking behavior that often accompanies the cele-brations associated with completing school. Students should be reminded of the respon-sibility associated with obtaining a driver’s license and the importance of being safe on the road. Similarly, students must party safely as the completion of school can inadver-tently become a dangerous time for teenagers. For information on reducing dangers for you child over the coming weeks please visit www.safeparty.com.au and www.schoolies.youthcentral.vic.gov.au

Throughout her 2nd Year in the Certificate II in Applied Fashion Design and Technology Danielle La Macchia challenged herself with applying her learnt skills in design devel-opment and garment construction in an inno-vative way by creating a final garment for her folio that was constructed from Italian playing cards. Danielle challenged herself further by entering her Garment into the Apex Teenage Fashion Awards Wearable Art category at state level winning the award for 1st Place in the Wearable Art category. A Day of Democracy

On October 21st four students, Megan Buttigieg, Michael Lim, Tim Luong and Madaleine Harris Schoba, from Catholic Regional College Sydenham attended the State Schools Constitutional Convention held at the Victorian Parliament.

Several schools from all over the State attended this day with the intention of debating the notion of whether or not the Australian version of democracy was flawed. Key topics for discussion included freedom of the press, human rights, citizenship, democracy, election processes and most importantly youth engagement in politics.

After an opening address from Martin Dixon, the Minister for Education, students were broken up into work groups, where they vigorously debated specific topics assigned to them by the Social Education Victoria repre-sentative. It was pleasing to hear that our students played a key role as group leaders, reporters and key repre-sentatives for a fairer society approach.

Upon returning to the Legislative Assembly our students provided insightful feedback from earlier groups ses-sions as well as detailed rebuttals to points raised by other delegations.

This opportunity afforded our students the ability to use knowledge and skill gained throughout their VCE experi-ence here are Catholic Regional College Sydenham and apply it to a series of political discussions. The experi-ence also provided our students the key challenge of working with a series of students from other schools and refining their interpersonal skills through cooperation and negotiation.

Barwon Heads Biology Excursion

On Friday 11th of October, the Year 11 Biology students went to Barwon Heads to inves-tigate the rocky shore. Biologists from the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre came and spoke to us about the different organisms present. We were able to sample the area and determine where each organism lived. Despite the extremely cold weather, all the classes were able explore the microhabitats in the environment and got to see a baby seal playing in the water. It was a great day for all the students who each learned something new and were able to form a better understanding of the rocky shore.

Overall, our students were excellent representatives of the College in a State forum. This was highlighted with meeting Adam Bandt, Greens Federal MP, and asking about their policy direction.

This valuable opportunity shall be open to anyone showing a passion for political en-gagement and is a fantastic opportunity to voice their opinions.

Community News

…………….From 2 x Ex Students

The Weekend to End Women's Cancers benefiting the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is a 2-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Melbourne. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m ready to do something bold and powerful in effort to end women’s cancers once and for all. My commitment is based on love for my fellow sisters, mothers, grandmas, daughters, nieces, and friends everywhere. It’s based on the realisation that we each need to do our part in this fight. I can walk. I can raise funds to benefit Peter Mac and their efforts to end women's cancers. I can and choose to be a part of this movement to take down women’s cancers! I ask you to take a stance with me and join this life-saving adventure for all women. Be a part of my very personal journey - by giving, by walking with me, or simply by sharing my story with your circle of influence. Don’t stand back and think about what you could have done – take that first step today! Take a chance with me – we have the opportunity to change thousands of lives, beginning with our own. This isn’t just my journey – it’s yours, too. One Weekend can change the world.
