Stump the Deacon!

Explain the “Eucharistic Fast? Canon law 919 requires that Catholics abstain from all food and drink, except water and medicines, for at least one hour before Holy Communion. If you want to get technical it does not say one hour before Mass starts but one hour before receiving Holy Communion. There are exceptions for the sick, the elderly and the infirmed, especially those in a hospital or homebound. Before you chastise Fr. Frank for snacking between Masses, note that priests are only required to fast before the first Mass they celebrate each day. Of course, it is always best if we understand the purpose behind any rule. The Church invites us to experience a bit of physical hunger so that we may develop a spiritual hunger for the bread of eternal life, and so be better prepared to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As mentioned in last week’s Bulletin, during this month of August, the parish Respect Life Committee is collecting monetary donations for the Door of Hope Ministry and would appreciate your assistance. All you need to do is take an envelope from the display in the church foyer, place it in the collection basket or bring it by the church office. The Door of Hope offers help in our community to those in need in so many ways. We appreciate your support of this important ministry in our community. Last year’s recipient was the Family Resource Clinic and we were able to collect over $1,200. Last Saturday we began August with the 80th year celebration for those celebrating 80 plus years of life this

year. It was a good celebration and we were able to welcome honorees both to the 4:00 Saturday evening Anticipated Eucharist as well as to a reception in the Parish Hall following. Anais Odom at left at 97 had the most years, having

been born in Port Allen February 5, 1918. Cutting the birthday cake was Peggy Buquoi who makes 80 years this Saturday. We thank Stephanie Gaudin, our parish nurse and those who assisted her (pictured below) in making this a good evening for so many of us.

As we continue through these weeks of summer and prepare for another ministry year, let us keep one another in prayer. Love,

This Sunday, Jesus continues to teach us how he is the Bread of Life. He reminds us that God is good to us and we can taste and see that goodness in our daily lives. In our first reading today Elijah was strengthened by God’s goodness and was able to get up and travel to Horeb. He was ready to give up, and like Elijah we sometimes are ready to surrender in defeat, but somehow through God’s grace, are able to get up and continue on, sustained by God’s goodness. In the Gospel today, Jesus was trying to give the people hope, to share that goodness, but they found it difficult, if not impossible to respond to that goodness. We pray that throughout the parish as we prepare for another ministry year, we might respond to God’s loving call, much as Elijah did, allowing God to assist us on our journey of faith through another year of parish life and ministry. God is so good. Let us in our daily lives “taste and see the goodness of the Lord” as we sang Sunday in the responsorial psalm. This weekend and next we have registration for our Parish School of Religion. It would be a wonder ful thing

if as we registered our young parishioners, we would be able to say that we have all the teachers and aids needed to serve their needs. We are moving ahead, but good and trusting parishioners are still needed in this important ministry. As of this writing, 749 students are registered, and (based on last year) 213 have not yet registered. It is important to register

this week or next so we know how many catechists will be needed. Presently we know we need 1 middle school and 1 high school catechist on Sunday; 3 elementary and 1 middle school catechists on Monday at 4:30 and 3 middle school and 1 high school catechists at 6:30; 1 Confirmation cate-chist on Tuesday at 6:00; and 2 elementary catechists at 4:30 and 6:30 on Wednesday. If you have any questions about needs or teaching, staff will be there in the F.F.C. after all Liturgies to answer your questions. On September 13 we will begin having Children’s Church at the 11:00 Eucharist. We have six very dedicated parishioners who have worked with this ministry and would like to welcome newcomers. Parishioners who may be interested could work as an assistant now and when they feel ready could lead a group. Presently we have three Leaders who work once every three weeks together with an assistant. In time it would be wonderful to have enough leaders and assistants that each team could serve once a month. Please speak with me, Sherry Leger or one of those who minister with it if you would like more information.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

“How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic?” The short answer is YOU! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Divine message

of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15). The Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry) phase of the R.C.I.A. Process is open to all adults, baptized and unbaptized, who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. The first session starts Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m. and continues each Thursday evening. R.C.I.A.-C for children begins Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in Room 3. Please call Judy Graphia at 665-9631 if you would like more information.

Parish School of Religion News

Jesus said, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:19-20

Becoming a catechist is an excellent way to respond to Jesus’ call. Speaking to catechists, St. John Paul II said, “Like John the Baptist, the catechist too is called to point out Jesus as the awaited Messiah, the Christ. His task is to invite people to fix their gaze on Jesus and to follow him, for Jesus alone is the Teacher, the Lord and the Savior.” —Jubilee of Catechists and Religion Teachers (12/10/2000).
