FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (843) 513-7605 ~ [email protected] June 18, 2020

Catholic Diocese of Charleston accepts ten new seminarians CHARLESTON, SC - The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone is pleased to announce that ten men have been accepted as seminarians for the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, bringing the total to 23 seminarians in South Carolina. Beginning this fall, these men will spend the next 6 – 8 years at various seminaries across the country studying and preparing for the priesthood. The new seminarians have an average age of 26 and come from cities across the state. They include:

Colin Doering, 18 years old, St. Gregory the Great Church in Bluffton Alex Foley, 22 years old, St. Mary Church in Greenville Michael Kane, 22 years old, St. Gregory the Great Church in Bluffton Paul Lacombe, 27 years old, St. Peter Church in Beaufort Chris Loester, 37 years old, St. John the Beloved Church in Summerville Mauricio Moreno, 27 years old, St. Gregory the Great Church in Bluffton Trenton Redmond, 27 years old, St. Andrew Church in Myrtle Beach Blake Schuman, 18 years old, Divine Redeemer Church in Hanahan Paul Sizemore, 29 years old, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston Michael Tracy, 34 years old, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston

The process of being accepted as a seminarian is a rigorous one. First, those interested in being a priest much discern his calling for a year. During the application process, he must obtain 15 letters of recommendation, go through a criminal background check, attend safe environment training, submit to a physical and psychological evaluation, and make a full financial disclosure. He is then interviewed by a diocesan review board. “These men are the future leaders of the Church in South Carolina. We put them through such a stringent process because we want to make sure they are spiritually and mentally ready to serve and care for the spiritual needs of the faithful,” said Father Matthew Gray, diocesan vicar for vocations. Bishop Guglielmone will ordain two men to the priesthood next month. Michael Cellars from Charleston and Will Frei from Aiken will take be ordained on Friday, July 10 at 5:00 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Johns Island.

CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY. Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will

do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart. Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too.

Father Dennis will continue celebrating PUBLIC Masses on the weekends at 5pm on Saturday for the Vigil and on Sunday Morning at 9:00am. Mass intention will be rescheduled for the Sunday Mass at 10:30am. We are

officially on the Summer Mass Schedule and therefore there are no Sunday Evening Mass Intentions at 5pm. Please feel free to call the Parish Office if you need to know when a Mass you requested was rescheduled. PLEASE NOTE: The only Saturday Mass at 12 noon will now be for First Saturday. The Vigil Mass on Saturday at 5 pm is offered in honor of her mother, Sophia A. Safarcyk, as she celebrates her 98th Birthday, at the request of Debbie Pape. The Mass at 9:00am on Sunday, June 28th is offered as a Missa Pro Populo (Mass for the People). Oh, no!! We are going to talk about tithing!! Quick, let’s skim over this and find something more pleasant to read!

Most Catholics will agree that fund raising, capital campaigns, and requests for general tithing are uncomfortable topics. Sure, you can put a couple of dollars in the poor box, but capital campaign requests which involves pledging money each year are tougher to talk about.

One of the things that helps focus our conversation is rallying around a common VISION, mission or goal. If we look at fundraising, and if we feel moved to give, it is often because we believe in the goal. At Our Lady of the Lake, we are moved to be generous in our giving at Sunday Mass (or through on-line giving) because our financial support is vital to our parish surviving this pandemic. Attendance at church, and even on-line streaming attendance is down, meaning our income stream is down. Our variance published in the June 14, 2020 bulletin is -$26,462.36 ~ that is a lot of tithing to make up. Our priorities are paying our dedicated and hard-working staff and paying our bills. It is going to be an austere year. If you share our VISION of paying our staff and keeping ahead of our bills, then we have a shared VISION. Looking at tithing from this perspective is intended to make it easier to think that we are all in this together. Please give generously. We know some have lost jobs or have reduced hours, but there are some parishioners on fixed income with significantly reduced expenses because we are not going anywhere, vacations and cruises are postponed or cancelled. Can you afford to give more generously?

Other ways of tithing include a few dollars in the poor box; men’s and women’s clothing and blankets for the homeless to Catholic Charities (right hand side of the pull-out drawer in the Vollkommer Bell Tower); food and paper product donations to We Care (left hand side of the pull-out drawer); soap, shampoo and washing detergent to Clean of Hearts (right hand side of the pull-out drawer); and men’s and women’s toiletry kits for the prison ministries (right hand side of the pull-out drawer).

Tithing brings us together for the good of the church, which brings us closer together as parishioners, because we are all sharing and participating in that common VISION for the common good. God bless!

Flowers for the Altar Flowers on the altar this weekend were provided by Pete & Anne Pillow in honor of their grandson, Eric, as he celebrates his 2nd Birthday; and, by Scott & Jeanine Matula, in celebration of their Wedding Anniversary,

Jeanine’s Birthday, and their grandson, Caden Yeilding, as he makes his First Holy Communion; and, by Alex & Beverly Ciani, in celebration of their 64th Wedding Anniversary.

The SECOND COLLECTION for July 12 is for Debt Reduction ~Loan on Land. Feel free to put in your Envelopes for the last several months if you wish!

A collection basket will be on the offertory table before and after Mass. Please use this basket to donate to the

Parish. Thank you for your support.

WILL YOU CONSIDER ONLINE GIVING?

Not surprisingly, our weekly collections have been impacted by this crisis. If you are receiving Father Dennis' Constant Contact emails, you know the details). Donating Online allows the church to operate with a more consistent revenue stream, and saves

time and money for those involved in processing bank deposits. It will save you time too! You can individually donate to "Special Envelope" offerings as well. Go to ollchapin.org/online-giving and click on "Choose Here to Give" image.

If you are a registered member of the Parish and are providing your Offertory on-line and no longer need your Envelope Sets, PLEASE call the Parish Office so we can stop sending you Envelopes and the incurred printing and mailing costs. MANY THANKS!

Paradise Revisited

Our culture would have you believe that love is a myth, sex is an indoor sport, relationships are meant to be temporary, and the meaning of life is beyond our comprehension. Let the Church lead you to the truth. God’s design for life, love, relationships, and sex is written into our very

bodies. With incredible clarity, Dr. Mary Healy explains how the Theology of the Body, Pope St. John Paul II’s deeply biblical understanding of Our Lord's original plan for men and women, is astonishingly good news for a culture littered with broken marriages, immorality, heartache, and loneliness.

We Care serves as a hub of community outreach, especially in times of crisis. Despite many closures, we are open and ready to serve! We have adapted our service model to serve by drive thru only to best ensure safety for both clients and our volunteer staff. Since implementing the drive-thru just a week ago, we have served well over 300 people! These clients are those most desperate for our help, who would not have enough to eat, whose lights may be turned off, without us. It is more important than ever that we stay open to serve those most in need. In the coming weeks and months, we anticipate that client volume will continually increase as layoffs and financial strain worsen. We are committed to meeting those expanding needs, even as we face the inevitability of reduced donations, particularly with churches unable to meet. We know that families and businesses are under tremendous pressure; in fact our understanding of that weight is a deeply important reason for cancelling the golf tournament. We also know that we are extraordinarily blessed by a very giving community and therefore request that if you are looking for a way to help in the crisis that you remember We Care and the vital work we are continuing to do. Donations are most thankfully received through our website www.chapinwecare.org or can be mailed to We Care at PO Box 491, Chapin SC 29036.
