CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE, WASHINGTON, D.C. SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 TODAY’S READINGS here two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20) What a beautiful image: Jesus himself is with us when we come together in his name, sharing our faith in him! But this is more than just a beautiful image that comforts us. It’s also a profound truth that challenges us. If Jesus is in our midst, what does that say about the way we should treat each other? Gathering “in Christ’s name” is like coming together for the weekly family meal—only on a much grander scale! It’s a time to share our lives together with Jesus in our midst. And it’s also a time to remember that we are called to love each other, to take up a concern for one another’s well-being. Remembering this focus on family relationships can help us put into practice Jesus’ teachings about helping a brother or sister who has turned away from the Lord. It will remind us that Jesus wasn’t giving a set of procedural rules on dealing with the lapsed. Rather, he was describing an attitude of heart—a attitude of love and compassion, not of harsh correction or condemnation. When you find yourself in a situation where you can help someone who has wandered from the Lord, remember that God wants you to see that other person through his eyes. Here is a son or daughter who has been created for intimacy with him. Here is someone who is infinitely loved. Here is someone on whom God wants to pour his grace and mercy. Let these truths guide the way you relate to that person. Let Jesus’ love, flowing from your heart, touch that person’s life. Let his mercy and compassion help you find the words to speak—or lead you to silent intercession. Let his Spirit give you wisdom! “Thank you, Father, for calling me into your family. Teach me how to reach out to my loved ones in a way that unites us all in love, reverence, and peace.” Taken from The Word Among Us, September 2011, Vol. 30, Number 8: Used with permission. Pero lo que dijo Jesús no tenía la intención de establecer una base jurídica para expulsar de la comunidad cristiana a un pecador impenitente. Si bien es cierto que puede haber circunstancias en las cuales se requiera tal acción, a fin de mantener la santidad y la integridad de la comunidad (véase 1 Corintios 5,1-5), el principal interés del Señor era restaurar al pecador a la gracia y a la comunidad, no excluirlo. Jesús le confirió a todo el Cuerpo de Cristo (la Iglesia) uno de los poderes que previamente le había dado a Pedro (véase Mateo 16,19). Dado que cometer pecado es separarse de Dios, dicha acción destruye la comunión entre el hombre y Dios, y entre el creyente y la comunidad cristiana. De manera que el pecado produce un efecto destructivo no solo en quien lo comete, sino también en el resto de la comunidad. Por consiguiente, es preciso proteger a la comunidad y hacer lo posible para restaurar el pecador a la gracia. Por consiguiente, el propósito de oír a los testigos es principalmente llevar al culpable al arrepentimiento y restaurar el cuerpo, y no el de presentar pruebas a fin de acusar y expulsar al que ha caído. Jesús dijo: “Donde dos o tres se reúnen en mi nombre, allí estoy yo en medio de ellos”. Cuando el cuerpo, o sea la comunidad, está reunida en nombre de Jesús, Él está presente y le confiere al cuerpo una porción de su propia santidad. El objetivo principal de los testigos es, pues, demostrar el amor de Cristo y su interés por la rehabilitación de la persona. De esta forma se conserva la santidad del cuerpo, y el pecador se reintegra a la comunidad de sus hermanos y hermanas. “Señor Jesús, concédeme la gracia de percibir claramente tu presencia en la Iglesia y en mi parroquia. Hazme ver de qué manera mi falta te ofende a Ti y debilita la vida del cuerpo. Dame la gracia de arrepentirme de todas mis faltas, pecados y errores para que tu santidad se refleje en la Iglesia.” Escogida con el permiso de La Palabra Entre Nosotros, Vol. 30, Número 5: Agosto/Septiembre 2011. LAS LECTURAS DE HOY primera vista parecería que Mateo explicaba las normas del tribunal criminal judío. La declaración de un solo testigo era insuficiente;

FAITH FORMATION

BOOK CLUB—THE GIFT OF BLESSED JOHN PAUL II Please join the St. Matthew's Book Club on Monday, September 12 at 6:45pm when they will discuss The Gift of Blessed John Paul II by Donald Cardinal Wuerl. In his new book, Cardinal Wuerl explores Blessed John Paul II’s teachings and life through an examination of his fourteen encyclicals and seven apostolic exhortations. Cardinal Wuerl illuminates the pope’s teachings and applies them to everyday life. The Book Club will meet in the West Conference Room, located in the alleyway next to the Cathedral. For more information, contact Paul Zummo at [email protected].

BECOMING CATHOLIC

Throughout the year, adults come forward seeking to learn about the Catholic faith. For those who are interested in learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing conversation about the Catholic faith, once a month. Inquiry is the first step in the process of discerning one’s commitment to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the East Conference Room. A brief overview of the entire adult initiation process (RCIA), which begins formally in June each year, can be presented after Inquiry for those who are interested. The next Inquiry will be held Wednesday, September 14. For more information, contact Heather Kinney at [email protected].

WHAT IS A PARISH MISSION?

A parish mission is a time for our whole parish to come together to reflect on the Word of Go d, pray together, and nurture a deeper faith and a deeper sense of community. A parish mission is a preaching event held over a period of consecutive days around a particular theme. It includes special preaching at weekend Masses as well as evening times for prayer, reflection, music and hospitality. A parish mission is an excellent opportunity for those seeking spiritual renewal, providing the space and time to look at your life, values and direction. St. Matthew’s parish mission will be Saturday, September 17 through Tuesday, September 20. (See bulletin insert for details.) Join us!

SPONSORS NEEDED FOR RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

Being an RCIA sponsor is an opportunity to share your faith and time with an individual who is discerning joining the Catholic Church. A sponsor is a companion, a representative of the faith community who models how to live the faith in daily life and meets with her/his catechumen or candidate to discuss their faith journeys. Sponsors themselves often report learning something new about their faith through the process. We have more than twenty women and men who have begun the RCIA process this summer. Each of them will need a sponsor. We are in particular need of young adults to serve as sponsors. To learn more, please contact Heather Kinney at [email protected].

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

Are you: 1) an unbaptized adult who would like to become Catholic? 2) an adult baptized in another Christian denomination who wishes to profess your faith as a Catholic Christian? 3) a baptized adult Catholic who would like to complete your initiation in the Catholic Church? Please contact Heather Kinney at [email protected] to inquire about the process of learning more about the Catholic faith and preparing for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

MARRIAGES Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202-347-3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.

BAPTISMS Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator, at the Rectory at 202-347-3215 x555. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they can ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor.

Individuals, families and groups from around the country and around the world visit the Cathedral to join us in prayer, at Mass or to celebrate Mass in one of our chapels. We invite you to plan a visit or pilgrimage to our Cathedral—all are welcome. Once you have a date in mind, let us know so we can arrange to accommodate you. Contact us at 202-347-3215 x512 or 202-587-5143 or [email protected].
