Reflection

Jesus commanded us to love one another. In what ways do you experience God’s love?

What are some concrete ways you show love to others? Who is most in need of your love and kindness right now?

80 South Market Street, San José, CA 95113-2321 408-283-8100 www.stjosephcathedral.org ,

“Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments

and remain in his love. ‘I have told you this so that my joy may be in you

and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.

No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.

I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing.

I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,

so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.’”

There has never been a better way to get to know Pope Francis and appreciate the beauty of our faith. Pope Francis makes our Catholic faith shine and this beautiful movie shows us why Francis has become the most popular and beloved pope of our era. A one-of-a-kind new movie co-produced and endorsed by the Vatican.

Opens in theaters nationwide May 18, 2018!

Liturgical News from the Vatican Pope Francis recently made two important contributions to the Church. To honor the Blessed Mother, he added the Monday after the Solemnity of Pentecost to be a memorial dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Church. It will be a movable feast that the universal

Church will celebrate to give thanks to God in reminding us of the important role of Mary in the birth of the Church and her involvement with the Apostles on that first Pentecost day. And more than a month ago, the Holy Father issued an Apos-tolic Exhortation entitled “Gaudate Et Exultate” or “Rejoice and be Glad” on the call to holiness in today’s world. This apostolic letter is addressed most especially to us Catholics reminding us of our vocation to holiness as we bring the face of Christ in this modern world. I advise that you take the time to read this simple yet meaningful apostolic exhortation of the successor of Peter. Blessings to all ~ Fr. Jeff

S aint of the Week Blessed Rosa Maria Benedetta Gattorno Custo 14 October 1831 – 6 May 1900 Rosa Maria Benedetta Gattorno Custo was born

October 14, 1831 to Francesco Gattorno and Adelaide Cam-panella who were from the upper middle-class and she had five other siblings. She was baptized mere hours after her birth in the parish of San Donato and received the sacrament

of Confirmation at the age of twelve. At the age of 21 she relo-cated to Marseille and in 1852 she married Gerolamo Custo. The two were forced to return to Gen-oa because of financial difficul-ties. They had had three children. The eldest daughter Carlotta suf-fered from deafness after she was struck with a sudden illness. Rosa’s husband's death on 9 March 1858 paved the path for a new vocation to blossom within her. Under the guidance of her confessor – Fr. Giuseppe Firpo -

she took her vows as a member of the Franciscan third or-der, dedicating herself to the poor and to children. She feared that her new path as a professed religious would force her to abandon her children and she asked for the ad-vice of Francesco di Camporosso - a Capuchin friar and future saint. She was received in a papal audience with Pope Pius IX at the beginning of 1866 and he encouraged her to start her new order while still being able to remain with her children. She established the Daughters of Saint Anne on December 8, 1866 in Piacenza, assumed the habit in 1867 and made her religious profession April 8, 1870. The new order received the official papal approval of Pope Leo XIII in 1879. Rosa also collaborated with Bishop Giovanni Battista Scalabrini - future Blessed - in providing assistance to the deaf. She contracted influenza at the beginning of 1900 and died on 6 May 1900 before receiving the last rites. Pope Saint John Paul II beatified Rosa on April 9, 2000.

Can you find these words from today’s Gospel hidden in the puzzle above? APPOINTED CHOSE COMMANDMENTS DISCIPLES EVERYTHING FATHER FRIENDS FRUIT JESUS JOY LOVE MASTER NAME REMAIN SLAVE

One of John’s intentions in today’s Gospel was to distinguish Christian belief from the beliefs held by the Gnostics. One of the tenets of Gnostic teaching was the importance of knowledge, or gnosis, as the determin-ing aspect of faith. In John’s Gospel,

we hear Jesus affirm that he is known by the Father and that his disciples will know the Father by knowing Jesus. In this passage, however, Jesus reminds his dis-ciples that this knowledge is to be expressed in love. Those who know Jesus well will love one another. Knowledge leads to love, which leads to action. Jesus taught that love is the sign of a true disciple and, thus, a true Christian. Even more, a true disciple shows a particular kind of love, sacrificial love. In the Greek, there are two words for love that are used in this pas-sage. The first is agape. The second is philia. The first word is most often used to describe love for other per-sons and for God. It is understood as the highest and most perfect kind of love. The second word is used to describe the affection of friendship. In this context, John appears to use these words as synonyms. The root of the Greek word for friend comes from this sec-ond term for love, philia. In the Hebrew Scriptures, faith in God made one a servant of God. Here Jesus teaches that his relationship to his disciples is based on friendship, not servitude. Another aspect of Gnostic belief taught that a believer was an elect person, cho-sen and set apart from the world. Jesus taught that a disciple is one who had been chosen by Jesus. To be chosen by Jesus, however, is not to be set apart from the world. Instead, it means to serve the world as he did. The disciples of Jesus were chosen and sent into the world to bear fruit by serving others, by sacrificing for others, in love. Jesus himself gives us the greatest example of the kind of love and service that he teaches to his disciples. He has, in fact, laid down his life for his friends, for his disciples, and for us.
