Categorising CardsThis activity involves finding the eight pictures that belong in the same category.
1. Print the category cards on heavy paper and cut out each picture separately. There are a total of 40 cards divided into five categories which are: Garden Shed/Garage, Park-land/Ponds, Green Vegetables, Spring Cleaning & Under The Sea
2. Place one card from each category on the table in front of the person. Place the rest of the cards face down in a pile.
3. Briefly explain each category. Example explanation is: “One of the categories has pictures of things that you might see when you are in your garage or shed.”
4. Ask the resident to take one card at a time from the pile and place it in on the correct category. Eg: the picture of the frog would go into the ‘park/pond’ category. The lady in rubber gloves would be in the ‘spring cleaning’ category. For residents who find there are too many cards, you can either use fewer cards from each category and/or use cards from just two of the categories to make the activity easier.
5. Pause and discuss the pictures as appropriate. Some examples for each category include:
• What things would you store in a garage? Did you keep your lawn mower or other tools in the garage? Was your garden shed very full?
• What things do you think you might see in a pond? Where have you seen a waterfall? Did you ever have a pond in your garden? Were there fish and frogs living in it?
• Have you ever watched programmes that show life under the sea? What amazing thing would you like to find under the sea? Have you ever been snorkeling or scuba diving?
• Have you ever grown vegetables? Which of these ones did you grow? What is your favourite green vegetable? Which of these vegetables might you describe as exotic?
•Did you use to spring clean your house? Did you enjoy doing it? Were there some jobs you used to do regularly? Which jobs did you not enjoy doing? Did you wear rubber gloves?
