Distance - 3.5 miles Rise and fall - 620ft Castle Crag from Rosthwaite Castle Crag is the tiniest of all the Wainwrights. This small, tree covered lump still packs a punch but your efforts are rewarded when you reach the top. Walk 1 2 4 3 5 6 WALK INSTRUCTIONS Start Point: Roshthwaite National Trust Car Park, CA12 5XB 1 From the car park in Rosthwaite head into the village past the farms and follow the Cumbria Way towards the river. 2 Follow the river and cross the stone bridge. Continue to follow the river using the Cumbria Way footpath. The peak to your left is Castle Crag, but this journey heads around the front first. 3 Enjoy the riverside views and explore the caves as you walk past. Milican Dalton, the ‘Professor of Adventure’ used to live in these caves during the summer months. Stay on the main path, following signs for Grange at this time. 4 As the river bends to the left you’ll head through a wide gate and then get to a path junction. Turn left here and start heading back southwards. Follow this rugged path until you see a path break off leftwards toward a high wall. Take this path. 5 Now on the ascent of Castle Crag, follow the obvious upward trending paths through the slate to the amazing summit. 6 To descend there are a few options. First descend to the flattening below the slate paths and cross the wall directly ahead. Follow the path that trends left and downward to re-join the Cumbria Way. Follow this back to Rosthwaite.
