The Royal British LegionPoppy appeal 2014This year Remembrance Sunday

falls on 9th November . The annual poppy appeal house

to house collection takes place during the period

running up to that day, during which time authorised collectors who are

well known to most of you will be calling .

Last year the appeal raised over £1000 in Cassington and Worton . May I on behalf of the Royal British Legion thank all of you who so generously supported the appeal last year and may we continue to rely on your generosity again this year .

Today the Legion is still being heavily called upon to give support to bereaved families, and to others who have been severely injured in wars and more recent conflicts . Costs to do this are continually escalating . The Royal British Legion does not advocate war or glorify it, but attempts to relieve the suffering caused by it .

Sunday 9th November The usual non-denominational Remembrance Service will be held at Cassington War Memorial commencing at 10 .45am . Everyone is invited to this short service, which follows immediately after the Service at St . Peter’s Church . Please do not leave cars near the memorial at this time .

Tuesday 11th November Remembrance Day, when a two-minutes silence will be observed nationwide at 11am .

Desert Island DiscsLast month’s castaway was church administrator and chair of school governors, Jan MacDonald . Castaways get to pick their eight favourite pieces of music (of any genre) along with a favourite book and a ‘luxury’ item . Here’s this month’s .1. You’re So Vain – Carly Simon . The lyrics make me laugh . ‘You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht!’ I mean, what was he wearing – a sailor’s hat, life jacket, espadrilles?! Makes me chuckle .2. Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond . This always makes me think of singing along with good friends in the pub .3. Let Me Entertain You – Robbie Williams . Well just let me entertain you!

4. Paradise By The Dashboard Light – Meat Loaf . This is a karaoke classic . It’s possibly the best

karaoke song ever! I always manage to bully someone into singing it with me – usually some unsuspecting stranger – because by this point all my friends have scarpered!

5. Never Forget – Take That . This song still to this day makes me cry! I love, love, love Take

That . I have seen them live several times . 6. Fat Bottomed Girls – Queen . Because we make the rockin’ world go round . 7. Feed The Birds – The Sherman Brothers . Used in the film Mary Poppins . A special song for a special lady that is no longer with me . Emma was my inspiration: my bestie!8. YMCA – The Village People . I can perform this song – actions and all! I used to do it every night whilst working as a holiday rep .

The book I would take is The Potato Factory by Bryce Courtenay . This is the first in a series of 3 books . It is a great story of Australian convict immigration . It is also the real story of Fagin . Oliver Twist is sent to Oz .My luxury has to be sweets and chocolate . Can I have a chocolate factory pleeeeeease!Think you know who it is? Let us know

Low Carbon Hub community share offer

The Low Carbon Hub has launched its 2014 community share offer to raise £1 .5 million investment into its first wave of renewable energy schemes

for Oxfordshire . This will fund 1MW of solar PV installations on eighteen schools and a number of local businesses across the county . The sale of shares in local renewable energy projects will mean that they will be 100% community owned, putting local power in the hands of local people .

The Low Carbon Hub share offer is open to investments of £250 and upwards until the 28th November . Investors will receive an average return of 5% rising to up to 8 .2% for those eligible for tax relief via the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) . Investment in the Low Carbon Hub will bring renewable energy to Oxfordshire and create a greener, more sustainable future for us all .

The Low Carbon Hub is an Oxford-based social enterprise that has been shortlisted for several awards in recognition of its work in championing community energy: Observer Ethical Awards; 2degrees Champions Awards; and the UK Community Energy Award . The Hub works in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council and Oxford City Council .

To find out more and to invest, go to: www.lowcarbonhub.org/invest .

Young people urged to register to voteYoung people in West Oxfordshire are being urged to make sure their names are on the Electoral Register so that they can vote at next year’s local and national elections .

A national poll suggests that hundreds of thousands of 18 to 21 years olds in the UK are currently not registered and could lose their right to vote . Young people are encouraged to register from 16 years of age so their details are on record ready for when they turn 18 .

The registration process itself is extremely simple, asking for a name, address, date of birth and National Insurance Number . It only takes a few minutes and can be done online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote .

Cassington Allotment AssociationWhat a wonderful summer we

have just had! And a bumper crop of vegetables . I don’t know how many of you have been up to the allotments recently and seen the transformation that has taken place since the association took over the administration of the site from the Blenheim Estate . Despite the lack of water on the site, all the plots have now been taken . A small contribution to offsetting the 77% of fruit and vegetables we eat in this country that are imported .

Cassington Allotment Association would therefore like to invite villagers, and especially those with families, to join our harvest celebration on Saturday November 1st in the garden of the Red Lion Pub . The Sports and Social Club will be providing a barbecue from 4pm onwards . There will be a pumpkin and fancy dress competition plus games and competitions for all ages . And if you stay on until 6 .30pm you can enjoy the Red Lion fireworks!

Roy’s RamblingsYes, I am still alive, and poking my nose in where it is not wanted; I expect people will say that the old fool is against progress . I love progress, but not when it starts to destroy the past . I fought to get parking for the Village Hall and had no support, least of all from the Parish Council . No vibrant society came forward to help, only moved people who tried to park and use the village hall . I said the school must not take over the centre of the village . As I said, I am not against the school, it is superb .

Now they want to upgrade the Pavilion . Has nobody thought it out – the Pavilion has parking so, to be blunt, this will finish off the Village Hall . I said way back that I did not know which would go first, the Church or the Village Hall . People will still want to be baptised, married and buried so at the moment I think the church stands the better chance .

Has anybody considered the people up in Elms Road, with late night traffic among all the cars parked up there? The people are all getting older but maybe they won’t be miserable old so-and-sos like me . Is it a good idea? I don’t think the village can stand two buildings like it . It should be talked over . I am too old to take on this task; it will be interesting to see if anyone else steps forward . Don’t forget, once it is done you can’t go back . What will you do with the Village Hall? I suppose the precept paid through our rates will come to the rescue of the hall . With luck it may just survive but please think it over carefully .

Sorry I have not kept the green up to my usual standard . My mate who does the strimming has done well, trimming the trees out level underneath that I have not been able to cope with . Sorry British Legion, I don’t think I can make it another year, after 40 plus years . I first did it for nothing, then got the Parish Council to pay the Legion, so if I stop they will be a bit short of funds .

‘We will remember them’This month we will again remember those who lost their lives in war serving in our armed forces and, because this is the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War, the so called ‘war to end all wars’, there will be many special commemorations .

However, there is sometimes a danger that ‘commemorations’ can become ‘celebrations’ and a glorification of war . Films and TV programmes of the horrors of war are only

second-hand reminders . Something more personal is needed to strike the message home .

Sadly I have never been to the Menin Gate or any of the great war cemeteries in Europe although it has always been my intention, at some time, to go . Pictures of the rows of thousands of graves don’t, I think, have the same effect as being there – don’t bring home the enormity of the human loss – don’t bring the tragedy fully home .

I think that maybe we all need to visit the war graves, and encourage our children and grandchildren to do so as well, all of us need to read the inscriptions to young men – many just in their teens – who were killed or died of their injuries .

Readers may know that there is an immaculately kept war graves cemetery in Oxford in one area of Botley cemetery . The reason why there is a war cemetery in Oxford is because the university examination schools buildings, and even the town hall, were used as hospitals for servicemen, particularly airmen .

There are around 750 graves in the war cemetery at Botley, enough to get some personal feeling of the tragedy . The war graves are a peaceful place and well tended by the War Graves Commission . There is a small shelter and a stone altar and information boards about the graves .

Go and touch a grave stone and read the inscription and imagine each young man, and look up and see the row after row of other young men their bodies buried in the Oxfordshire soil .

Again today we are actively involved in a conflict in Iraq, this time against the fanatical, so called, ‘Islamic State’ . It seems that Jesus was right when he said (Mark 13:7), “When you hear of wars and rumours of wars do not be alarmed . Such things must happen but the end is yet to come” . Universal peace, this side of heaven, is, it seems, unachievable and the hope of any ‘war to end all wars’ is naive . Ironically sometimes we still do have to ‘fight for peace’, or fight to preserve peace, as the lesser of evils .

When we stand in silence by the memorial on Remembrance Sunday we mourn not just for those who died but for ourselves and the whole of humanity . Where, for our peace, God himself had to die on a cross . Our only, eternal hope now is in the risen ‘Prince of Peace’ – Jesus Christ – Thy Kingdom Come . Amen .

Serving the Hanboroughs, Freeland, Cassington, South Leigh, Stanton Harcourt, Sutton and Northmoor.

SUNDAY MASS is at 10am with a Children’s Liturgy during Mass (and SATURDAY for Sunday 7 .30pm)

Mass also Monday 10am (sometimes 7am), Tuesday 5 .30pm, Wednesday 9 .30am, Thursday 12 noon and Friday 7am .

THE PRIEST Fr . Martin Flatman is happy to receive enquiries by phone, email or text . Mobile 07719 646790;frmartinflatman@gmail .com

HIS WEEKLY TALK (Homily) can be sent to you by email . Just send your address . It can also be found on the Parish Website and on his blog, which is: frmartinflatman .wordpress .com . See his daily thoughts on FACEBOOK as Martin Flatman and on TWITTER @frmartinflatman

THE CHURCH is open for prayer every day (address below) .

THE HALL (The Tolkien Room) is available for hire . Tel: 07919 605544; c .barton0660@gmail .com .

WE REMEMBER ALL WHO HAVE DIED this month . Our Requiem Book is at the back of the Church . We have put the names of our loved ones in the book already but you could always add one later if you like . On Sunday 2nd November which is All Souls Day we shall pray for them all and, weather permitting, we end the Mass by going outside to bless the graves and pray for all those buried there and those who founded the ancient Abbey and our Church .

ALL SAINTS DAY will be celebrated on Saturday 1st November with Mass at 10am . This 10am Mass will be followed by a coffee morning for Aid to the Church in Need to support the Christian refugees in Northern Syria .

WE PRAY FOR THE DEAD as well as for the living at every Mass every day but especially in November when the Book of Requiem is placed on the Altar . But remember throughout the year anyone can ask for special prayers for their own loved ones on an appropriate day such as the day of their death or their birthday . This is called ‘offering a Mass’ . It is normal to give the priest a gift for doing this

ON REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER our Sunday Mass at 10am ends precisely at 11am with the two-minute silence as we pray for all who have died in war especially in the two world wars of the 20th Century .

A SING ALONG TEA PARTY will be held on Saturday 29th November from 3 til 5pm . This is a repeat of the very successful event last year, which is great fun for everyone from our little children to some of our oldest church members .

A COURSE ON CHRISTIAN BASICS is being held this autumn and winter until Christmas, but since most people do not get to such courses if they are given on a weekday evening, this will be given via the Sunday Homilies which, remember, can always be read afterwards and are permanently available on the Internet at frmartinflatman .wordpress .com .

ALL THE CATHOLIC PRIESTS of Oxford & West Oxfordshire and the Deacons will gather at St Peter’s on Tuesday 11th November for a Meeting and Lunch . A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at about 12 .15pm for all Priests and Deacons who have died and anyone is welcome to come to it .

SMALL CLEANING JOBS about three times a year – might be something you could do? Perhaps you would like to polish the brass candlesticks, or clean the window and surround to the left of the main entrance . Thanks to those who already clean the whole Church every week on a rota basis .

NOVEMBERDaNcE DayOccasionally we dedicate a day to enhance the children’s learning experience in a different way than usual by using experts from outside the school. In September we invited a company to teach the children dances from around the world. They worked with each class to produce a dance which was then shared at the end of the day. These dances ranged from the Charleston through to Carnival, Lion King and Aboriginal. Every child took part, from the 2 year olds through to the 11 year olds, and all looked to be enjoying themselves.

Oak class DRaMaOak Class, our Year 1 and Year 2s, has been studying the ‘Great Fire of London’. As part of this topic they made reproduction miniature 17th Century houses from card and straw and the class teacher, Miss Sydney-Smith, then set fire to them in the playground. The children were enthralled and watched in wonder as the fire consumed their houses. Luckily it went out quickly and did not rage for the same amount of time that the real fire did! The risk assessments completed beforehand ensured that everyone was safe but it was good fun and a great learning experience!

HaRVEsT fEsTiValOur Harvest festival Service this year, held in St Peter’s Church, was on the theme of being thankful. The children generously brought in many gifts of food for the Porch project which supports the homeless and vulnerably housed in Oxford.

fOREsT scHOOl Forest School is an exciting outdoor learning opportunity and we have been busy launching Forest School at St Peter’s School. We are now very pleased to be offering weekly Forest School sessions for our Early Years children and an after school Forest School club for the older children. Our Forest School vision at St Peter’s school is: “We aim to foster the development of a relationship between the child and the natural world. We believe children should be given space, freedom and time to learn and develop through play and discovery in a natural and interesting outdoor environment.”

We base our Forest School sessions on the following six principles: * Principle 1: Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School. At St Peter’s School Forest School is a long-term process that happens throughout the year. Children have the opportunity to join in with Forest school every other week for a whole afternoon. The sessions have a child-centred rhythm and are planned based on children’s interests and needs. * Principle 2: Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world. At St Peter’s School our Forest School sessions take advantage of our generous school grounds. Our Forest School is set up on the school site, by the Elder Tree. We also make use of the pond and swamp areas. * Principle 3: Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners. At St Peter’s School we promote the Characteristics of Effective Learning throughout our Forest School sessions. All adults supporting a Forest School session should encourage children to be curious, to be independent, to ask questions, to persevere and, where possible, adults should allow children genuine choices over how to do an activity. * Principle 4: Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves. At St Peter’s School careful ‘risk benefit’ assessments have been carried out before undertaking any potentially ‘risky’ activities. We talk to children about things that are ‘safe’ and ‘risky’ and we encourage children to be increasingly involved in the process of managing risks. The Forest School Leader and Forest School Assistant know the children well and provide appropriate support for activities based on children’s age and stage of development, giving them opportunities to stretch themselves while ensuring their safety. * 5. Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional (continued overleaf)

adults skilled in observing and supporting young children. The Forest School Leader also has a paediatric first aid qualification, including outdoor elements. The Forest School Leader and Forest School Assistant aim to meet together regularly to share good practice. We look forward to our Forest School Assistant completing her Forest School qualification in the near future. * 6. Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning. At St Peter’s School the adults involved in Forest School sessions observe children to gain an insight into their interests and achievements. These insights support future planning. Adults create a positive climate for learning by noticing and praising children’s positive attitudes, ideas and efforts. Sessions always end as a group, encouraging children to reflect on what they’ve been doing throughout the session.

So far we have been busy exploring the swamp area, playing on a tree swing, climbing trees, finding minibeasts and making dens. We look forward to cooking our snack on a campfire and planting a living willow wigwam next term!

Eynsham art trail – winning designsDesigns by a group of older people are among those to be carved into way-markers for a new Art Trail celebrating Eynsham’s centuries-old Wharf Stream .

Artists, schools and community groups from the Eynsham area were invited to submit designs to feature on the oak posts, which will be fitted at intervals along the newly-developed Wharf Stream Way trail .

The winning designs have been chosen and come from members of Eynsham Day Centre along with artist Jane Tomlinson . Both the day centre and Jane, who lives in Eynsham, will receive a ‘prize’ of £250 .

Work is now under way by Oxfordshire carver Rodas Irving to bring the images to life on the 5ft tall way-markers ready for them to be installed during autumn .

The markers are part of a joint art project between West Oxfordshire District Council and Eynsham Parish Council to create a mile-long Art Trail linking east Eynsham to the River Thames and highlighting the history of the Wharf Stream, which was used for more than 600 years for freight carrying .

Eynsham Day Centre produced drawings during their weekly meetings . They worked with local artist Alice Walker to develop their ideas, incorporating local wildlife and allotment inspired artwork, into simplified line drawings which could easily be carved into the wooden posts .

Brightly painted A1-size information panels designed by Jane and another local artist, Lorna Marrison, have also been

created and will soon be put in place at the start of the trail, in Swinford Green, and end, near the Wharf Stream . The panels depict not only the route and its fascinating history, but also some of the flora and fauna that can be seen along the way .

The project complements work by volunteers since 2006 to open up the Wharf Stream and has included gaining permissive rights for footpaths, installation of new entrance gates and a new bridge installed by Oxfordshire County Council, seating along the trail and owl boxes as part of work to support and encourage wildlife .

Recycle your used cooking oilWest Oxfordshire District Council is one of only a few local authorities to offer cooking oil recycling as part of household collections . Solid fat such as lard can be left to cool and, when hardened, scraped your food waste recycling bin . Leftover oil, when cooled, can be poured into a clear plastic bottle and put out next to your kerbside recycling boxes on collection days . As well as putting the waste to good use by turning it into green energy, the service will reduce the amount of leftover cooking fat and oil being poured into sinks and drains . When this happens the liquid fat solidifies and can create putrid fatty masses, known as ‘fatbergs’, which cause serious problems in sewer systems . In West Oxfordshire there have been almost 1,500 fatberg blockages in the last five years, resulting in over 300 homes and gardens being flooded with sewage .

chases suitors for marriage, Belle is left on the sidelines wondering if she will ever find love. But Belle meets an idealistic young vicar’s son bent on changing society, and together they help shape Lord Mansfield’s role as Lord Chief Justice, to end slavery in England.
