CASPER COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS ACCT 2120-N1 Computer Spreadsheet Accounting

Semester/Year: Spring 2018 Course Description: ACCT 2120 Computer Spreadsheet Accounting (3CR): This course prepares students to interact with computerized accounting systems (Excel). Major concepts of computerized accounting will be introduced including trial balance maintenance and financial statement generation. A commonly used spreadsheet program (Excel) will be used throughout the course. • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication. • Solve problems using critical thinking and creativity. • Create and analyze financial statements. • Master time value of money calculations. • Complete excel functions that relate to preparing accounting reports and solving accounting

problems. Outcomes: The goals will be achieved when:

• Students will effectively communicate with the instructor and other students on e-mails and reports. Students will effectively communicate with the instructor during office hours and appointments.

• Students will solve accounting problems using critical thinking and creativity when they utilize excel to solve the accounting problems.

• Students will use excel functions to create and analyze financial statements. • Students will master time value of money calculations with excel formulas. • Students will complete excel functions that relate to preparing accounting reports and solving

accounting problems by learning Excel basics, formatting, lookup and other functions executed by excel.

Methodology: This is an on-line course where most of the communication will take place in the Moodle classroom. Questions and comments will be made using the Moodle classroom e-mail. Please e-mail Evan with any questions or concerns about the homework or class in general. I hope to promote a team atmosphere where students are engaged and feel respected. we can resolve those issues and make the class as productive and enjoyable for you as possible. Your feedback is valuable as the instructor uses course evaluations in determining course methodology. Evaluation Criteria: Accounting 2120-N1 will be graded as follows: Graded Component Points Available Chapter Assignments & Cases (13 x 50) 650 Exams (3 x 80) 240 Excel Accounting Project 110 Total Points 1,000 Grade Points Percents A 900-1,000 90-100% B 800-899 80-89% C 700-799 70-79% D 600-699 60-69% F < 600 < 60%

NOTE: For borderline grades the exact number of points determines the letter grade. Thus, an 899 is a high B, but still a B and not an A and so on and so forth. My apologies in advance for those that are close, but the line must be drawn somewhere. Please feel free to ask me to review grading on any work throughout the semester. Required Text, Readings, and Materials: 8th edition Financial Analysis with Microsoft Excel 2016, Timothy R. Mayes CHAPTER ASSIGNMENTS AND CASES Each of the 12 chapters covered will have graded assignments and cases from the end of the chapter. The assignments and cases for each chapter is worth 50 points LATE WORK: The instructor reserves the right to accept or reject late work on a case by case basis. Work that is submitted late is subject to a 20% penalty. EXAMS We will have 3, 100 point “proctored” exams covering 4 chapters each. The test questions may be related to definitions or short problems where the covered material must be applied. EXCEL ACCOUNTING PROJECT: The Excel Accounting Project will be worth 100 points. This project will involve creating and analyzing financial statements utilizing Excel. It will also involve utilizing primary Excel functions in order to solve accounting problems. Casper college may collect samples of student work demonstrating achievement of the above outcomes. Any personally identifying information will be removed from student work. Class Policies: Last Date to Change to Audit Status or to Withdraw with a W Grade: Thursday, April 12th, 2018.
