• CASL (The Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors) - A DOE Energy Innovation Hub for Modeling & Simulation of Nuclear Reactors Education Program participated for the sixth time in the ANS Student Conference.

• The conference was hosted by the University of Wisconsin and held in Madison, WI.

• The ANS 2016 Student Conference included 425 attendees with 123 podium presentations and 31 posters on new and innovative solutions for the nuclear science and engineering community.

• A CASL Undergraduate Research Scholar presented his research at the conference.

CASL Undergraduate Research Scholars, 2016-2017Creating a new generation of LWR Designers, Scientists, and Nuclear Power Professionals

• CASL Education Program implemented an Undergraduate Research Scholars program at North Carolina State University to aid in the recruitment of top students.

• Selected undergraduates are given the opportunity to do research with a CASL faculty member. Each undergraduate receives support to perform CASL related research.

• Since its implementation 32 students have participated. Out of the 25 that have completed their undergraduate degree, 12 are currently attending graduate school and 4 have completed graduate degrees.

• Other partner universities are being encouraged to develop similar programs.

• Currently 6 active Scholars at NCSU engaged in projects with 5 NCSU faculty. All current active scholars submitted to present at Student ANS in Pittsburgh, PA, April 2017.

• To support its diversity mission, the CASL Education Program supported its second Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Summer 2016.

• Jamell Walls Paschal from South Carolina State University performed research under Dr. J. Michael Doster at North Carolina State University (NCSU).

• The student was granted a stipend plus housing and a food allowance while staying at NCSU.

• Mr. Paschal’s focused on comparing quality experimental data, provided by the Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation (NUPEC) of Japan, to model predictions of two-phase flow behavior in boiling water reactor (BWR) fuel bundles.

Mr. Paschal participated in NCSU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium that included a poster session to highlight the results of his research.

CASL Education Summer Institute, 2016 Creating a new generation of LWR Designers, Scientists, and Nuclear Power Professionals

Institute Purpose & Activities:

The CASL Institute introduced participants to CASL and the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) framework.

Participants received instruction in radiation transport, thermal hydraulics, fuel performance, multi-physics coupling and sensitivity and uncertainty analysis.

Lectures and hands on examples and projects focused on the VERA component codes MPACT, COBRA-TF, BISON and DAKOTA. In addition, the Institute utilized high performance computing resources.

After successful completion of the Institute and meeting certification requirements (team project), participants earned the CASL-VERA Certificate. Qualifies for PE Continuing Education Credits.

Institute Highlights:

Organized by Education Program and ORNL Staff: J. Michael Doster, Sherry Bailey, John Turner, Bill Martin, Koroush Shirvan, Leigh Winfrey and Lorie Fox.

29 participants with graduate and undergraduate students representing 12 universities and 1 industry representative.

5 Students participated in a student poster session highlighting their own research.

Exposure to national lab environment with strong participation by ORNL, INL, and Sandia Staff
