Summary:Writer/director Matt Daniels, the creative mind behind the production company Thinklab, is premiering hissecond music video with MTV (Throw Me the Statues "Lolita" premiered May 23, 2008 MTV), DamienJurado's "Caskets", November 21, 2008 on MTV2's indie rock music show Subterranean.

Inspired by a story written by singer/songwriter Damien Jurado, the music video depicts the slow demiseof a young man, played by Drake Jurado (Damien Jurado's younger brother). Set at the turn of thecentury and shot in the epic landscapes of Eastern Washington, the video invokes the hard times of thepioneer past.

Damien Jurado's Comments on the Video:working with matt daniels and the rest of thinklab, was an experience that i will never forget. when i firstmet matt to talk about the vision, that we as a band, had in mind for our song "caskets".. he was so opento all of these abstract ideas we were throwing at him. matt also was coming up with some greatsuggestions and lending his ideas and vision.. really working with us.. emailing and calling every time hewas on to something. in the end, he not only used these ideas and ran with them.. he made them come tolife in a music video that looks more a sneak preview to american cinema's next epic. i am honored tohave worked with matt, a director who not only does a great job, but also gets involved. ..involved is sucha small way of explaining it. knee deep in the blood is more like it.

Drake Jurado's (Damien's younger brother who stars in the video) Comments on the Video:"working with matt and the thinklab crew was an experience I not only will never forget but also want to doagain. He made the video like as if it were a movie. A movie loaded with blood and gore! When I wascoverd in blood on my death bed in the video I felt like I was in a Hershell Gordon Lewis movie. He wasthe first guy to ever kill me on film. And thats something I've always wanted ever since I was a kid. I thinkit should be nominated for a scream award personally. I don't care where I am in my life or whatever it isthat i'm doing. If matt calls me up one day and wants to make another movie then I'm there. I am very

lucky and very thankful to have been in this video. This is something I would like to do more of in thefuture"

Genre:Western/Horror

Story:• The scenario was written by singer/songwriter Damien Jurado. He gave us a framework to work

from. We knew the story would feature Damien's younger brother, Drake and the rest of theband. I decided to set the story at the turn of the century in a Terrence Malick, "Days of Heaven"world, with lots of wide open landscapes. I love experimenting with new genres on each project.I hadn't done western or horror, so a gory western made sense.

Locations:• We knew we wanted to escape the city and use real locations. To achieve the look we knew we

were only going to use natural light. This also helped take the edge off of the digital format.• 2.5 Hours east of Seattle had these epic landscapes, abandoned structures and slightly more

predictable weather.• Armed with a bunch of reference images from Flickr, our producer (Jaime) and assistant camera

(Phil) did the initial location scout. They found the abandoned house that became the locationfor the surgery scene. Phil grew up in Eastern Washington and showed us Quincy Lakes, andmany other locations, but Quincy lakes was probably the most epic location we had to workwith.

Acting:• The video features no professional actors, just the band (Damien, Eric, and Jenna) and the

Damien's younger brother, Drake.• Our rehearsals and acting prep for the shoot were literally done on the 2.5 hour drive over the

mountains, on our way to the first location.• We (the crew) were all amazed at how great the band looked in costume, in these locations.

They were all nervous and natural in front of the camera.

Successes:• Small crew, a flexible schedule, and a relaxed attitude allowed us to move fast do a ton of

exploring while we were shooting. We left with all kinds of stuff you just can't script -- an owl

flying from tree, a praying mantis landing on our production designers shoulder, flies on thecurtains...

• We shot for 3 days and nearly an entire day was spent with just 1 actor, 1 DP, and 1 directordriving driving around finding epic landscapes and abandoned structures.

• The use of natural light and these amazing locations created the perfect mood for the piece.• Because we were shooting digital we were able to shoot a lot of coverage and be free form in

finding angles, shooting actors when they weren't aware of it, etc.

Challenges:• Drake's Role - Drake walked for miles, barefoot and shirtless, across sharp rocks, on a cliff,

through a lake. On the third day he was extremely sunburnt and had to lay in a dirty bed for over8 hours while covered in blood and guts. Lucky for us, he was willing to do anything... nevercomplained, smiled more than anything. He even came back a week later to be dropped into acoffin about 15 times.

• Wind - it was windy as hell, but it didn't rain. Rain is a big risk when shooting anything in thenorthwest. It actually rained back in Seattle while we were over there.

• The Bed Burning Scene - In trying to shoot the final scene of the bed burning we were having aterrible time finding a location where we we weren't at risk of starting a major fire. It was windyeverywhere. We found an open, hilly field that shielded a lot of the wind. As we were setting upa farmer drove up in his truck and informed us we were on his property and that it had recentlybeen seeded. We spent the next 2 hours racing against sunset, in search of another safelocation. With minutes of sunset Phil found the perfect spot, a rock Quarry with banks blockingthe wind and the sunset off in the distance.
