So why would a company choose 2009 to buy a brand new cold planer? Sierra Nevada Construction’s (SNC) answer to that is actually tied directly to the state of the economy … or rather the state of its recovery. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) or the stimulus package, allotted Nevada $201 million of the $27 billion in funding for critical repairs to our nation’s roads and bridges. One of the multiple requirements of ARRA funding was the state had to assign the money to specific projects within 120 days. SNC, a 20-year-old asphalt paving and construction company, knew that meant there would be a plethora of Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) highway projects to be won, and they wanted to be ready. Craig Holt, SNC Vice President, realized they would need to make some changes in preparation for all the upcoming opportunities. “While our grinding subcontractors have always been great, we wanted to be in complete control over the schedule and pace of these paving jobs.” Holt explained that the speed of any paving job is set almost exclusively by the milling rate of the cold planer, or how fast the machine is breaking up and removing the old pavement. Cold planing, an automatically controlled cold milling technique, restores the pavement surface to a specified grade and slope, precedes hot asphalt pavers in “grind and pave” projects like SNC’s I-80 job in rural northern Nevada. Running the cold planer ahead of the paver by approximately two days usually achieves maximum efficiency. However, such a carefully scheduled project plan prohibits a cold planer breakdown, which would bring the entire job to a grinding halt. As a direct result, SNC made the decision to purchase a new cold planer, eliminating third party equipment scheduling, and preparing for possible future ARRA highway projects. When evaluating cold planer capabilities, SNC’s first requirement was high-quality performance; so both Wirtgen and Roadtec ranked at the top of their list. However, when Cashman Equipment’s salesman Mike Arp learned of their exact jobsite needs and equipment expectations, he immediately hit the books … Caterpillar’s specification books. Was Wirtgen or Roadtec going to deliver the production quality SNC was looking for? Arp was positive that the Cat ® PM-201 Cold Planer was the better choice, but knew SNC would need facts and figures to help them make an informed decision. Mike knew he could quickly access the Caterpillar databases online, research many alternative machines, and present a competitive analysis. The report Arp was able to provide to SNC included specifics such as engine performance, operating weight, conveyor size and swing, rotor drive system and cutting depths, service access points, undercarriage, and powertrain specifications for comparable Cat, Wirtgen, Roadtec, CMI/Terex, and Marini cold planers. With the numbers in front of them, SNC found that the Cat PM-201 Cold Planer specifications demonstrated the best performance rates. “Until Mike presented us with the research, we weren’t confident we were going to go with Cat. We thought Roadtec was the best,” reported Dan Martini, SNC’s equipment manager. With their first requirement met, SNC’s second requirement came to the foreground – extensive parts and service capabilities. SNC’s paving jobs can be located anywhere in the region. An excellent example of one remote jobsite is their current I-80 project near Valmy, NV. With Reno 204 miles northwest of Valmy and Las Vegas 420 miles southeast, timely access to parts and service provided too many challenges for the competition. Cashman was more than ready to tackle this issue as well. With 200 service technicians, 100+ field service trucks, and locations in Reno, Winnemucca, Elko, Round Mountain, and Las Vegas, Cashman Equipment offers parts availability and abundant service coverage to handle all of SNC’s remote paving jobs. However, SNC’s careful preparations for opportunities created by government stimulus funding didn’t stop with the PM-201. A new asphalt paver would also be required. Again, researching all the options made SNC’s decision a lot easier – Cat’s AP1000 Asphalt Paver was the clear winner over the Cedarapids option. Not only was Cashman able to offer a more competitive price, multiple service access points made the AP1000 the mechanics’ favorite. “Our guys said it was a lot easier to maintain than other brands, so they all wanted the Cat paver,” Martini stated. “Everyone on the jobsite likes what they’ve seen so far, so we’re pretty happy with our choice.” With three large projects and numerous small jobs currently underway, the PM-201 and AP1000 are extremely busy at SNC’s outlying jobsites. From Bishop, CA to Valmy, NV, Cat AP1000D Asphalt Paver on I-80 near Valmy, NV (May 2009.) SNC’s Cat PM-201 Cold Planer at work in northern Nevada (May 2009.) Emissions Solutionsfor Off-Road Machines

Cashman Equipment offers emissions retrofits for mobile off-road machines in four categories: Engine Repowers, EngineUpgrade Groups, Oxidation Catalysts, and Diesel Particulate Filters. The type of solution appropriate for a specific application depends on the configuration of the machine’s exhaust system and specific emissions targeted by application emissions regulations. Trust Cashman to help you find a cost-effective solution.

Throughout the country and within Nevada, emission requirements are rapidly chang-ing. Compliance with emission regulations is not a choice. In fact, it is mandatory. Noncompliance penalties can include:

• Hefty fines• Stepped-up enforcement by local and

state agencies• Bid specifications and site permits that

require diesel emission reductions• Decreased profit margins and potential

job loss• Legal actions, litigation costs, and

lost time

Emissions Solutionsfor Stationary Equipment

Emissions retrofits for your stationary equip-ment are tailored for diesel and gas engines. Solutions can also be customized for many non-Cat engine applications. Cashman offers three primary types of aftertreatment retrofits — Oxidation Catalysts, Selective-Catalytic Reduction, and Diesel Particulate Filters.

California Emissions Complianceat Cashman

Cashman Cat the Rental Store keeps a close eye on all the emissions regulations in California, as well as in Nevada. We have recently updated all our machines to meet the Clean Air Act updates regarding on-road, off-road, stationary, and portable diesel equipment. Cashman’s entire rental fleet is California Air Resources Board (CARB) registered, in full compliance with California emission mandates. Cashman can also assist customers in the registration of their equipment with CARB if they plan to operate in the Golden State.

caterpillar® Receives Usa Epa’sclean air Excellence award

Caterpillar Inc. has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Air Excellence Award for its D7E track-type tractor with electric-drive. The electric drive system is the first of its kind in this application, designed to maximize efficiency and productivity while conserving natural resources.

The diesel-electric drive technology uses a diesel engine to drive an electric generator that powers two AC electric drive motors. The D7E track-type tractor (bulldozer) increases dozing efficiency by 25%, reduces fuel consumption by 10 to 30%, and reduces criteria and greenhouse gas emissions.

The total emissions reductions, from greater productivity and fuel savings, per hour are: 10% for CO, 20% for NOx and HC, 51% for PM, and 23% for CO2.

“Caterpillar is committed to improving the sustainability of our customers, our industry, and our shared environment,” said Tana Utley, Caterpillar’s Chief Technology Officer, who accepted the award at a ceremony in Washington, DC. “We are proud of the D7E and the significant improvements in fuel efficiency and productivity it will provide our customers, ultimately helping them cut costs and reduce emissions. This accomplishment proves technology can improve both customer value and sustainability. Technology unleashes the power of ‘and’, which makes sustainable progress possible.”

The award was established in 2000 at the recommendation of the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee. It annually recognizes and honors outstanding innovative efforts to help make progress in achieving cleaner air. Award-winning entries must directly or indirectly reduce pollutant emissions, demonstrate innovation, offer sustainable outcomes, and provide a model for others to follow.

“Each year, our Clean Air Excellence Award winners offer amazing new examples of how we keep our air safe and clean,” said EPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson. “This year’s

award recipients have built on that tradition of innovation to show what is possible in protecting human health and the environment.”

Emissions Repower Frequently Asked Questions

what is an Emissions Repower? An Emissions Repower is an engine replacement repair option. It is one of the solutions offered by Cashman to reduce exhaust emissions from existing Cat® machines by replacing a machine’s current engine system with an updated version that achieves lower emission levels.

How does it work?Repowering an in-use machine with a new engine gives you the benefits of emission reduction technologies not available in the past by including new fuel injection system, electronic controls, cooling systems, etc. Where appropriate, repower engines include ACERT™ Technology.

what are the warranty and Extended Service Contract (ESC) options? All engines carry the standard parts warranty and emissions component warranty. The Cat Insurance Engine Emissions Retrofit Extended Program is available to customers through all U.S. dealers. An authorized Caterpillar dealership like Cashman must perform the entire emission retrofit.

what Caterpillar Repowers are available from Cashman?Caterpillar is constantly striving to make advances in the emissions repower arena, so the options are always updating. For the latest details, contact your Cashman representative to learn more about Caterpillar’s Emissions

Repower Solutions Report. Our experienced employees can discuss local regulations and suitable repower options.

what are the engine “iron” differences between a Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 repower?Tier 1 is the simplest and usually involves just an engine replacement. Tier 2 and 3 repowers are more involved due to the additional need to upgrade cooling packages and the addition of electronics. Some repowers also require drivetrain and sheet metal modifications.

How do I order an Emissions Repower? An emissions repower engine arrangement must be ordered as well as the individual parts in the “installation group” parts breakdown. Diesel Particulate Filters (DFP) can be ordered through Cashman’s parts department. Our experienced parts associates will consult the DPF Solutions Report to get the complete Cat Emissions Solutions (CES) approved list of filters for your equipment.

Is there financial assistance installing a repower?Yes, besides federal and state funding (up to 100%) where available, Cashman and Caterpillar offer financial assistance. Available through December 2009, customers can apply for “0% Financing for Emissions Retrofit Products & Services.” If you require other financial assistance options, contact your Cashman Equipment representative.

plug into Rental powerThere are many important reasons to properly investigate and establish a relationship with a source for rental power. From planned activities like special events and building expansions, to unexpected power outages, having a temporary power plan in place guarantees the power you need is there when you need it. Working with Cashman Equipment’s Power Solutions rental team can be extremely beneficial in circumstances such as scheduled power shutdowns, remote construction sites, new or expanded facilities, seasonal peak load needs, and unscheduled maintenance on equipment.

When choosing a rental service as part of an overall energy plan, it is imperative to establish the provider’s credibility from both a service and an equipment standpoint, as the power system you rent is only as reliable as the supplier that backs it. Key indicators of a credible rental power provider include certification as an authorized sales and service representative of the products supplied, as well as use of genuine parts for the service of those products. A rental power provider like Cashman Power Solutions, that is also part of a nationwide network, can assist with large-scale, multi-site power needs, offering total rental power solutions through a single source.

It is also important to evaluate the ability of the provider to deliver a complete, reliable system tailored to your specific application needs. This includes the ability of the rental provider to accurately specify the correct amount of power and the complete equipment needs. In addition, the evaluation

process should include the rental power provider’s ability to support the stages following equipment specification, from on-time delivery, to set-up and testing, to on-site monitoring for optimal equipment functioning.

Another critical factor in identifying a rental power provider is their capability to deliver the equipment you need when you need it – particularly in an emergency situation. Cashman Power Solutions, offers 24/7/365 specification and delivery of rental power systems to ensure crucial operations are backed-up and running as soon as possible. In addition to continuous power products, Cashman’s Power Solutions team offers temperature control units, air compressors, and fuel, a full complement to all your rental needs.

The final aspect of thoroughly evaluating a source for rental power comes in an internal examination of logistics and local air permits and building/fire codes. Questions from “What are the local air permitting requirements?,” to “How will cable be routed from the power supply outside to the electrical distribution boxes inside?” are important considerations. A well-qualified, credible rental power supplier like Cashman Equipment will be able to support each stage of your rental power application, assessing viable logistical in advance will ensure efficient delivery and installation of your equipment.

cashman Equipment lube servicesGood maintenance is critical to increasing machine availability and decreasing overall operating costs. whether you operate one machine or a fleet, Cashman Equipment has the comprehensive lube services designed specifically for your preventive maintenance plan.

Cashman’s Lube Services are timely as well as thorough – 98% of scheduled and unscheduled services are completed in a 2- to 24-hour timeframe. Our technicians follow Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines, using genuine Cat® parts and lubricants, and we oil sample every designated compartment so we can alert you to potential problems with the engine, drivetrain, or hydraulic systems. Our factory-trained Mobile Lube Technicians can also provide the same level of skilled service at your convenience, right on the jobsite. A dedicated Service Coordinator provides behind-the-scenes assistance by scheduling needed repairs, dispatching the mobile lube service, sending maintenance status updates, and providing written follow-up reports.

Proper maintenance plays a major role in dependable equipment operation. To keep productivity up, oils, coolants, and filters are excellent indicators of potential issues and require regular analysis. Normal component wear is expected and predictable; abnormal wear may be the result of improper maintenance or operating techniques, and it can adversely affect your productivity and your owning/operating costs. However, Cashman’s lube technicians are prepared to help you execute an effective preventive maintenance plan.

OILS Engine oil performs three main functions: cleaning, cooling, and lubricating engine parts. High-quality oils provide maximum protection and life in a number of ways:

• Engine oil cleans parts by carrying away damaging metal particles and deposits.

• Engine oil cools parts by absorbing and carrying away heat.

• Engine oil lubricates parts by forming a thin film to support and separate them.

To ensure your engine oil correctly performs these functions, it is important to change the oil regularly and properly and to select the right engine oil.

Change oil regularly When fluids are pushed beyond recommended change periods, contaminants develop, causing oil to break down. These contaminants embed themselves in bearing surfaces and other moving parts, causing wear. To avoid contamination, we recommend that you change oil every 250 and/or 500 hours.

That is just a guideline, however, because actual oil life is determined by many factors — including operating conditions. By monitoring fluids analysis (S·O·S) results, we’ll help you determine an appropriate service interval for your equipment. Proper intervals will also help you optimize the lubricating and protecting properties of oil and maximize component life. Change oil too early, and you waste money by not maximizing the fluid potential. Change oil too late, and you risk incurring even greater costs through shortened component life. (Check the maintenance manual or speak with a Cashman PSSR for recommendations on your specific machines.)

Change oil properlyIt’s also important to change oil properly. You can reduce the chance of contamination during oil change by:

• draining when oil is warm and agitated.• draining dirty oil as completely as possible.• using a filtered transfer cart to add new oil.

Select the right oilHigh-quality engine oils provide maximum protection and life for today’s low-emission, high-performance engines. Using an inadequate oil means vital engine parts aren’t protected, which can result in unnecessary wear. To avoid these problems, Caterpillar engine oil has been developed in order to provide the full performance and service life built into Cat engines.

Using Caterpillar oil is the safest way to ensure top engine performance. We can help you determine the right oil for your Cat engines, or you can refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM).

Engine wear and failure causes Problems in the lube system can cause accelerated abrasive wear or catastrophic failure of core engine components. The common causes of engine wear and failure are:

• excessive soot in the oil.• poor quality/low performance engine oil.• extended oil change intervals.• poor maintenance practices.• fuel dilution.

COOLANTThe cooling system maintains correct engine temperatures by taking away unwanted heat generated by combustion and friction. Over 40% of engine failures are caused or aggravated by cooling system problems, so properly maintaining your system components and selecting the right coolant can significantly reduce the chance of engine problems.

Maintain the cooling system properly Overheating and overcooling can cause excessive wear and engine failure, so it’s important to recognize and react quickly to indicators of each. High or low temperature gauge readings, as well as high-wear metal content and elevated oxidation levels in fluids analysis reports, may be signs that repair is needed.

To avoid overheating and overcooling, always use proper start-up procedures — never start operating until the engine has reached the correct temperature. To avoid other cooling system problems, remember to clean debris from the radiator and fan, check the radiator cap seal to ensure the rubber seal is in good condition, and inspect the water pump daily for dripping coolant or oil.

Select the right coolantCat Extended Life Coolant (ELC) helps prevent overheating, overcooling, and other cooling system problems and lasts twice as long as traditional coolant. It also eliminates the need for supplemental coolant additives, resulting in as much as a 45% reduction in engine coolant maintenance costs.

Cooling system wear and failure causes Problems in the cooling system can cause accelerated erosion or catastrophic damage to the core engine components. The single most common problem is poor coolant quality, which causes accelerated cavitation, erosion of cylinder liners, corrosion, and failure of waste pump seals. Poor coolant quality is due to:

• not maintaining adequate levels of coolant additives.• using coolant that does not meet manufacturer’s

minimum recommendations.• not keeping the cooling system topped off.• using coolant past its useful life.

FILTERSAir, oil, and fuel filters are designed to control contamination inside your engine. Effective filter changes and accurate filter selection help you maintain engine cleanliness and reduce component wear.

Change filters regularlyAir filters should be changed as working conditions demand. The Air Filter Service Indicator will help you determine the most accurate period. This easy-to-read indicator shows progressive air restriction caused by dust and soot build-up. By glancing at the indicator, you can tell how much filter life is used and how much remains. Consult your Product Sales and Support Specialist (PSSR) or refer to the OMM for the recommended change interval.

Change filters properlyOld filters contain contaminants, so it’s important to remove them carefully at change time. Proper removal ensures contaminants do not reenter engine oil or fuel. You should also keep new filters in their packaging until you are ready to install them. The packaging will help keep them free of contaminants. It is also important not to pre-fill fuel filters.

Select the right filtersAir filters — Inadequate filtration can reduce horse-power, rob performance, and ultimately damage your engine. Most Cat air filters feature a radial seal design preventing dirt, soot, sand, and other contaminants from entering your engine. Plus, the quick change element enables you to change your filter and get your machine back to work fast. Cat Ultra High Efficiency Filters are designed for environments containing fine dust, soot, or both and can last two to four times longer than standard filters in these conditions.

Oil filters — Quality oil filters work in unison with fluids to provide the highest levels of filtration cleanliness, performance, and protection. Cat oil filters are manufactured to meet the most demanding specifications, providing increased performance and lower costs.

Fuel filters — Fuel filters prevent fuel system wear caused by dirt. Cat High Efficiency Fuel Filters feature special media that trap even very fine particles. They are essential to maximizing fuel injector and fuel pump life and prevent hard starting caused by premature injector wear.

An effective and efficient preventive maintenance plan, with proper oil, coolant, and filter services, will keep your equipment and your business running at optimal performance. working together, you and Cashman Equipment will make it happen.

A Credible Benefit to customers

Cashman Equipment’s Fluids Analysis Lab provides customers with convenient testing, analysis, and interpretation of fluids from mobile machines and stationary equipment. Specializing in sampling and analyzing used and new oils, fuels and coolants, Cashman’s fluids analysis team provides customers with reliable, comprehensive sample reports and interpretation analysis and recommendation.

In 2008 and early 2009, the 11 person team spent approxi-mately 12 months working toward a prestigious goal — International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 17025 certification. In order to become certified, Cashman’s lab had to meet the Laboratory Accredited Bureau (L-A-B) ISO 17025 standards. L-A-B, a globally recognized company providing laboratory certification, strictly adheres to the ISO guidelines for consistent quality. Receipt of the ISO 17025

accreditation assures customers that equipment calibra-tion methods, sample test processes, data collection, and reporting follow standard operating procedures and are consistently accurate.

Cashman’s ISO 17025 Accreditation provides formal recognition to the thoroughness of the employees work processes, documentation, and careful fluids sampling and analysis procedures. The entire Fluids Analysis team labored diligently to document each individual lab procedure, ending in the creation of an extensively detailed 39-page manual. In order to be certified, L-A-B auditors closely audited the lab, processes and procedures, and manual, comparing the documentation to actual practices. L-A-B reviewed details like:

• Competence of staff• Validity and appropriateness of test methods• Traceability of measurements and calibrations to

national standards• Suitability, calibration, and maintenance of test

equipment • Organization of testing environment• Sampling, handling, and transportation of test items• Quality assurance of test and calibration data

Cashman is one of only two Caterpillar labs worldwide to become ISO 17025 certified. According to Stan Schumacher, Cashman’s Lab Quality Control Manager, “The key to accreditation is saying what you do, and doing what you say.” The company already practiced the basic concept associated with ISO 17025 certification (consistent practices), but every single step of a process had to be clearly laid out and fine-tuned to meet L-A-B’s standards. Whether it is customer interactions or equipment calibration, the ISO 17025 accreditation means customers are receiving the benefit of reliable, consistent fluids analysis services from Cashman Equipment.
