First: using the marker we

gave you, write

“C.B. (your legal first and last name)”

in upper left –

even if it is your own paper !

You will be looking for evidence of each Item from the Investigative Design Rubric and then putting a “Code” for that Item and then a 1 or 0 in a circle to show whether you found evidence of that Item or not.

Page 3: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 1: Question

Is the question in the form of a question?

If the question is in the form of a question (has a ? Mark) write the Code “Q” (for Question) in the left margin and underneath put a 1 in a circle(example below).

If not in a Question, put a 0 in a circle (saying you looked for it, but couldn’t find evidence of it)

STEP 1 - QUESTION (or Problem): Can we improve the original formula for making casein glue?

1

Q

This was given and only needed to be copied

Page 4: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 2: Hypothesis

Is the hypothesis in the “If …., then …., ” format ?

STEP 2 - HYPOTHESIS (or Prediction): IF the ingredient __________ in the original formula for making casein glue is increased by 10%, THEN the glue will hold more weight in grams BECAUSE the modified formula’s chemistry works better.

If you find the proper IF, THEN format put a Code “H” (for Hypothesis) with a 1.

If you did not find BOTH of these put a 0. They both must be in the Hypothesis.

1

H

They should have put in what ingredient changed

milk

STEP 2 - HYPOTHESIS (or Prediction): IF the ingredient __________ in the original formula for making casein glue is increased by 10%, THEN the glue will hold more weight in grams BECAUSE the modified formula’s chemistry works better.

milk

Step 2: Hypothesis

Does the hypothesis have a “…because…” explanation why things are happening that way ?

(it was given and only needed to be copied)

If you find the …because… explanation put a Code “B” (for Because) with a 1. If not put a 0.

1

B

Page 6: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment:

Is there a Materials List ?

Materials List:

electronic scale graduated cylinderwarm and cold water baking soda beaker (for mixing)dry milk wire screen cup (for straining) vinegar6 wooden sticks 3 large paperclips

If you find a Materials List put a Code “ML” (for Materials List) with a 1.

If you did not find one put a 0.

1

ML

Helps Grader if the Responding Variable Measuring instrument is first on the list (easy to find)

Page 7: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment (continued):

Is the Manipulated Variable clearly identified ?

Manipulated Variable: our ONE ingredient that changed was_____

Somewhere in the write-up you should see something like “The Manipulated Variable is…”. It can be listed (the best way to do it) or in the Procedure, but it MUST be clearly identified. Where you find it put a Code “MV” with a 1.

If you did not find it put a 0.

1

MV

They should have put in what they were changing

Page 8: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment (continued):

Is the Responding Variable clearly identified ?

Responding Variable: weight held by glue in grams

Somewhere in the write-up you should see something like “The Responding Variable is…”. Where you find it put a Code “RV” with a 1.

If you did not find it put a 0.

1

RV

This was given and only needed to be copied

Page 9: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment (continued):

Is at least one Controlled Variable identified ?

Controlled Variable: (you write one – something that if it changed would give bad results) in future write three

Somewhere in the write-up you should see something like “One Controlled Variable is…”. 8th Grade only needs one – but get in the habit or writing three (two needed in 9th/10th). Where you find it put a Code “CV” with a 1.

If you did not find at least one put a 0.

1

CV

They should have written one of their own here(obvious one is ANY of the OTHER ingredients – be specific)

Page 10: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment (continued):

Does the Procedure have #ed logical instructions?

Procedure:1. follow given Procedure on Lab HO to make the glue.2. follow given Procedure for Breaking Glue and Recording

Data.3. Repeat the whole experiment at least two more times.

(can’t do this time, but write it)

If you skim read the Procedure and it seems to follow a logical sequence and is numbered, put a Code “# L” (Numbered Logical) with a 1.

If you did not find it logical or #ed put a 0.

1

# L

These two were given and only needed to be copied !

Page 11: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 3 – Experiment (continued):

Is the whole experiment repeated at least two

more times ?

3. Repeat the whole experiment at least two more times. (can’t do in real life this time, but write it)

The Procedure should explain how to do either the whole experiment again or multiple trials. Be careful if it says “repeat steps…” to be sure those steps are the WHOLE experiment or multiple trials. Where you find it put a Code “RWE.” with a 1.

If you did not find it put a 0.

1

RWE

This was given and only needed to be copied

Page 12: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 4 – Data Table:

Is there a data table or chart to record data in an

organized way ?

If you find some kind of a Data Table (or chart) put a Code “DT” with a 1.

If you did not find one put a 0.

Page 13: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 4 – Data Table:

Is the Data Table labeled with the Manipulated Variable ?

Data tables or charts should have proper labels (including units). If you find the Manipulated Variable labeled put a Code “MVL” (for Manipulated Variable Label) with a 1.

If you did not find one labeled put a 0.

Step 4 – Data Table:

Is the Data Table labeled with the Responding Variable ?

Data tables or charts should have proper labels (including units). If you find the Responding Variable labeled put a Code “RVL” (for Responding Variable Label) with a 1.

If you did not find one put a 0.

Step 5 – Conclusion:

This was the ONLY part of the Lab Write-Up that you had to create on your own.

BUT you were given detailed instructions for doing it, a PowerPoint about doing Lab Write-Ups properly and Rubric to follow as well to help you.

* write your own Conclusion following the instructions below: Copy the hypothesis, and then Explain how the calculated Difference between the Before Change Average (Original) and the After Change Average (Modified) tells you your Hypothesis is correct or not (in a state test “Answer the Question”). **********************************************************************************************************Tahoma School District also wants you to do the following in Lab Write-Ups to do even better science:EVALUATION / CRITIQUE (what you should do after ANY work you do) After finishing any work, you should sit back and try to find weaknesses or areas that could have created invalid (not good) data/results. This does NOT INCLUDE “not following the Procedure properly”. This will help you/others do any follow-up experiments better and show you knew the experiment’s limitations. This will also help you design better experiments in the future as well. Try to find two things that were “bad”. NEW QUESTIONFinally, write down a New Question to investigate that is related to this experiment.

Page 16: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 5 – Conclusion:

There are SIX parts to a good Conclusion and should basically be a SUMMARY of the whole experiment.

Is the original Hypothesis Copied (word for word) ?

If you find it, put a Code “CH” (for Copied Hypothesis) with a 1.

If you did not find it put a 0.

1

CHIF the ingredient ____________ in the original formula for making casein glue is increase by 10%, THEN the glue will be stronger BECAUSE the modified formula’s chemistry works better.

Did they copy their Hypothesis from Step 2 exactly?

milk

Page 17: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 5 – Conclusion:

Next – are the two averages stated?

the Before Change Average and the After Change Average Look for each and put a code for each one:

Code “BCA” for Before Change Average andCode “ACA” for After Change Average

If you did not find each of these put a 0 for each.

1

BCA…was correct since the Original Glue held an average of 1,800g and the Modified glue held an average of 2,500g.

1

ACADid they state the Before Change average?Did they state the After Change Average?

BCAACA

Page 18: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 5 – Conclusion:

Finally – is there an Explanation for how the calculated Difference between the two averages tells how the

Hypothesis is correct or not ?

If you find two-parts something like:

“…since the Modified Glue held 700g more than the Original Glue, the Hypothesis was correct.” use Code “ExD” and give 1 pt.

If you did not find an explanation OR calculated Difference put a 0.

1

ExD…Hypothesis was correct since the Modified Glue held an average of 700g more than the Original Glue.

Page 19: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 5 – Conclusion:

TWO EXTRA Good Ideas for the District – Evaluation / Critique

Now that the Hypothesis has been proven correct or not, it’s good to look at the whole experiment and try to find areas that may cause bad data (i.e. make the experiment “invalid”). Any reasonable idea of what may have made the experiment not work as good as it should have is OK. Use the Code “E/C” and put a 1.

If you did not find any good idea for Evaluating or Critiquing the experiment put a 0.

1

E/C We did not control how much glue was used on each stick setup and this may have added another variable. Also, since the glue was drying once it was made, all three stick setups should have been glued together at the same time as much as possible (i.e. three people gluing together).

Page 20: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Step 5 – Conclusion:

Finally (again for the District) – Any new questions ?

While doing an experiment, usually new questions come to mind that you may want to experiment on afterwards. Look for any related follow-up question and use the Code “NQ” (for New Question) and put a 1.

If you did not find any new questions put a 0.

1

NQ If milk made a good glue, I wonder if other dairy products would work also – such as yogurt ? Or maybe changing one of the other ingredients instead would work better too ?

Now…

You need to total all the points earned (there are a total of 18 possible) and then record the total up near the person’s name on the front page (should be in the upper right) in a fraction out of 18 and circled (see below).

Kanye was grading Taylor’s paper

(hope he was fair and accurate)

If not… BIG penalty!

Page 22: CASEIN GLUE LAB WRITE-UP GRADING Tahoma Jr. High 8 th Grade Science Maple Valley, WA

Finally… You will give the paper back to original owner for them to double-check your grading is accurate.

When you get your own paper back carefully go through it.If you disagree with how it was graded, then write nearthe grade the code(s) “see DT”, etc.to let the teacher know to lookthere and make a final decision.

If you don’t put any notes theteacher will figure you arehappy with how it was gradedso check carefully and makea note if you need to!!

Then initial yourself thatyou checked the grading.

We will use this format to grademany lab write-ups. It’s part of the

practice you will need to do good Lab Write-Ups.

It will help you learn how to do them betterby having:a stranger see your work,

grade someone else’s like a State Test grader wouldAND

for you to double-check your paper was graded correctly.

THIS WAY HELPS YOU LEARN THE RUBRIC VERY WELL - VERY

QUICKLYend show
