“The course has allowed me to gain a fresh perspective on how I approach my work and has made me aware of a whole new range of skills and techniques to utilise in my role. I am very grateful that Weir has given me the opportunity to be involved in this programme which not only fits in with my working schedule but is tailored to be relevant to the Weir business and my working experience.”Stuart Mann, Service Centre Manager, Weir Power & Industrial

Launched in 2011, the Weir Business Management Programme is an accredited management development programme leading to a Postgraduate Certificate in Management. Designed for managers identified as ‘high potential’, the programme has the following objectives:

> Expand the business skills and knowledge of senior managers by undertaking an internationally-recognised Postgraduate Certificate in Management

> Strengthen participants’ understanding of the strategic and operational working environment of the Weir group, by applying their learning to the Weir context

> Provide a facility to exchange ideas and good practice, widening participants’ peer network and ability to engage with other managers across the group

The programme is divided across seven core subjects, delivered in three week-long sessions. The entire programme including assessments takes 12-15 months to complete. Sessions are interspersed with online study sessions and self-directed learning resources.

The Weir Group is structured as 50 companies divided into three divisions across 70 countries. Since 2011, Weir Group has enrolled over 150 managers from across the globe, with a mix of technical and functional expertise. “We are partnering with those pioneering businesses we believe have DNA in common with ours, including global ambition, vision and commitment to people development as key elements of their business strategy.”Peter Gordon, Chairman, William Grant & Sons

MBA 25Case study

The Strathclyde MBA in association with William Grant & Son

“I was approached by Strathclyde Business School and William Grant & Sons who wanted the MBA 25 cohort to contain a mix of professionals from certain industries. I’d always looked upon university as somewhere I would have liked to have gone, a missed opportunity. I saw the MBA 25 as a chance to stretch myself and learn about other areas of business, areas where I didn’t already have influence. Johnstons is still owned by the same family after 215 years, it’s a luxury brand manufacturing for luxury brands, so the MBA 25 was a perfect fit.

“The programme differs from other MBAs in that it has been tailored to promote innovation, family business and luxury brands. It caters to the audience and the audience has been handpicked. The modules have been designed so the cohort gets as much out of it as it possibly can.”George McNeil, Managing Director, Retail Division, Johnstons of Elgin

Strathclyde Business School launched the bespoke MBA programme – MBA 25 – in partnership with William Grant & Sons, with the aim of creating global leaders of the future. Taught part-time over three years, MBA 25 is focused on luxury, high-value Scottish brands and companies with a clear global ambition. Participants are from William Grant & Sons and a consortium of entrepreneurial partner organisations, which the company sees as sharing similar values to itself.

MBA 25 recognises that delegates will have already achieved significant positions within business, and will have corresponding expectations about this learning opportunity. Individual development coaching, real-time projects, and guest visits from a wide range of business leaders maximises the learning experience. It includes two distinct elective courses: family/owner-managed business and luxury brand marketing.

“It is important that we offer our employees access to development opportunities that will help them succeed. Energy is a global business, and we must be ready to meet the global challenges that our industry faces.”Ignacio S. Galán, Chairman, Iberdrola

Iberdrola MBA in the global energy industry

Case study

“Iberdrola’s MBA in the Global Energy Industry provided me with a top notch education that not only refreshed my knowledge of critical business concepts but also incorporated Iberdrola’s management philosophy and global perspective. Completion of the programme helped to prepare me for the promotion to a leadership role where I continue to apply the knowledge and experience in my everyday work. I am honoured to represent Iberdrola and its U.S. business and have no doubt that my participation in the MBA programme has helped to shape my leadership style and capabilities and will continue to pay dividends as I move forward in my career at Iberdrola.”Laura Beane, Vice President, O&M Services, Iberdrola Renewables USA

This bespoke executive education programme customises the Strathclyde MBA experience to meet the needs of Iberdrola through developing participants’ management and leadership competence with a focus on the context provided by the global energy sector and the specific objectives of the organisation.

Delivered jointly with Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow and Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, new bespoke business and engineering classes have been developed reflecting energy sector imperatives, complementing the bespoke design and development of core classes to focus on energy sector content and the specific challenges faced in this industry.

Participants are provided with management tools, analytical skills and the specialist knowledge required to effectively lead their organisations. They learn through a mixture of self-study, lectures, seminars, online webinars, group work and exposure to different ‘real life’ business scenarios and case studies.

On completion, delegates receive an MBA from University of Strathclyde and an MBA in the Global Energy Industry from Comillas University.

The MBA Programme is accredited by all three of the main International Accreditation bodies through Strathclyde Business School’s triple accreditation status. In addition, the Comillas degree is accredited by the University and receives full Spanish Accreditation by ANECA.

Leading Transformational Change

“The Babcock LEAD Programme has been developed to bring together fresh ideas from one of our leading Universities with the business challenges our leaders must face to deliver on our strategic plans. We look forward to working together and sharing the benefits with our teams.”Kevin Goodman, Director of Organisational Development, Babcock International Group

The LEAD programme is designed to bring together theory and practice with a clear focus on solving specific organisational challenges. It is a learning journey underpinned by leading research but very much rooted in enabling the present and future performance of Babcock senior managers and leaders who choose to engage with the programme.

Babcock LEAD is a selection of short, high-impact learning experiences to promote identified skills and expertise critical to the future success of the group. Each module is specifically aligned to individual learning needs based on current and future business challenges and opportunities.

Designed for Senior Management, the programme brings together leaders from across the business to provide a development intervention based on diagnosed individual needs, ensuring the learning impacts the business as well as the individual whilst fostering better links across the business through building improved networks and collaboration.

Strathclyde Business School has a long-standing working relationship with Babcock. Since the Babcock Academy launched in 2005, more than 800 managers have participated in programmes delivered by Strathclyde Business School as the organisation has grown and evolved.

The modules have been designed to promote skills and expertise critical to the future and success of Divisional and Group strategies.

It is a learning journey underpinned by leading research but very much rooted in equipping leaders with the knowledge, tools and skills to deliver sustainable improvements in organisational performance.

Change – aimed at the development of skills and knowledge in managing change within an organisation by examining current thinking and the development and application of a toolset of techniques.

Growth – the objective of this model is to develop improved expertise in both business winning and setting up robust and success-oriented projects utilising cross-divisional capability and shaping contracts to make them efficiently executable.

Deliver – covers the areas of the business planning process improvement, lean thinking and customer service using an experiential approach to learning and a business simulation platform.

In addition to the core modules outlined above it is recognised that there will be an ongoing need to provide developmental opportunities in certain key areas to further develop business skills and knowledge.
