Founded in 1976 as a fabricator of material handling equipment for the wood products industry, Allied Systems Company is a leader in the engineering and manufacturing of specialized heavy lift and material handling equipment across several industries. Allied’s skilled engineering and manufacturing teams construct custom equipment and vehicles to customer design or design the equipment to the customer’s exact standards, and manufacture the entire product on site in Sherwood, Oregon.

The Challenge: Finding CNC Machinists & Other Skilled Trades Positions to Keep Up with Growth in ProductionWith the boom of the manufacturing industry following the recession, the need to source and maintain skilled trades workers—especially CNC Machinists and Welders—became increasingly difficult. Allied’s specialty in engineering and manufacturing depends on a steady supply of reliable job candidates without having to worry about the minutiae of the sourcing process.

The Solution: Trustworthy Collaboration & Investment in Fine-Tuning the Recruitment ProcessOne size does not fit all in the hiring process. In working with Dave McCart, HR Director at Allied, the DePaul Staffing team tailored its approach to the sourcing, screening, and recommending of skilled trade candidates to meet Allied’s specific needs. “DePaul’s staff was willing to tour our facilities and learn our requirements for hiring experienced, solid and long term employees,” said McCart. By deepening the relationship and asking what worked and what did not work for Allied, DePaul Staffing was

able to successfully create a hiring workflow that kept interruptions to Allied’s core competencies to a minimum, while providing them the maximum benefits of skilled candidates.

The BenefitsBy taking care to develop a holistic sourcing and hiring process up front, high-quality CNC Machinists, Welders, and other key positions at Allied are filled with reliable, dedicated workers—reducing turnover, building skill, and allowing Allied’s core business and reputation to continue to flourish.

Since 1973, Bilet Products Company (a subsidiary of United Pacific Forest Products) has been a lead-ing manufacturer of pallets, crates, skids and custom wood boxes, and other lumber products in the Northwest. Bilet’s Tualatin location is responsible solely for custom pallet design and manufacture for its wide customer base, and therefore has ever- shifting staffing needs at a moment’s notice.

The Challenge: Quickly-trainable Staff Willing to Work HardWith a constantly-changing order frequency from top-notch customers such as Coca-Cola, Kroger, Intel, Costco, Albertsons, and others, management at Bilet has little to no time to manage the HR overhead that comes with hiring additional workers to help design, produce, and ship specialty pallets and crates in a short timeframe. Bilet creates shippable pallets, skids, boxes and bins for anything from fragile computer parts to bags of living ladybugs to gigantic steel beams for the renovation of the Brooklyn Bridge, and such varied orders can (and do) come in at a moment’s notice. Bilet needed some help.

The Solution: DePaul’s Pool of Safe, Skilled WorkersPallet building at Bilet is “real tough work,” according to Dennis Murphy, Site Supervisor at Bilet, and therefore, Murphy needs a steady stream of dependable, safe employees who are willing to work hard. In this manner, Bilet is able to test out workers before hiring them on full-time at the company to ensure that they’ve got the mettle to perform. In other words, Bilet now is able to “try before they buy” and source quality candidates straight from the temporary pool provided by DePaul.

The BenefitsWith DePaul Staffing, Bilet is able to meet both its temporary staffing needs and its long-term staffing needs while solving its customers’ product and logistics problems. Bilet is a tight-knit family and have people who have worked side-by-side together for many years. It’s important to Bilet that the company

providing their HR and staffing solutions—their people solutions—have open, honest communication and select employees who are not only hard workers, but who fit best with the culture of the company. For Bilet, DePaul and its employees are the perfect fit.

When Claudia Lucero discovered that it took just a few simple steps to make fresh cheese within an hour’s time, she started making a variety of different kinds right out of her home kitchen in Oregon. When word spread and interest piqued, Claudia began building do-it-yourself cheese making kits on her dining room table—and quickly found them to be incredibly popular, thanks to being featured on Etsy, HGTV, the Food Lover’s Guide to Portland, and in other high-profile outlets.

The Challenge: Finding a Local Packager to Manage High- Volume Orders without Compromising QualityUrban Cheesecraft was founded on the principle of sourcing all elements locally, including the packaging. With increased demand due to a new large distribution contract with Williams Sonoma, Lucero needed a local packer that could handle start-up volumes of product while keeping the same homegrown feel of a D.I.Y. product assembled in a Portland kitchen. She was unsure that it was possible.

The Solution: DePaul’s Value-Driven Experience & FlexibilityLucero reached out to DePaul Packaging for hand-pack kitting work for an initial volume of a few thousand cheese kits. Today, DePaul packs 15,000 kits each month and growing. For Lucero, the partnership’s appeal was twofold: DePaul was not only able to handle a fluctuating (and increasing) amount of kits and preserve her product’s artisanal integrity, but was able to help produce a social good as a result of the contract. DePaul’s social mission of creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities is wholly in line with Urban Cheesecraft’s

local, sustainable, community-driven philosophy. DePaul was able to involve a wide variety of people with disabilities on the Urban Cheesecraft project and still maintain highly efficient handpacking turnaround time to keep up with demand.

The BenefitsUrban Cheesecraft is able to respond to increasing customer demand while maintaining a truly flexible, transparent relationship with DePaul as its co-packer. Through this partnership, Urban Cheesecraft is able to preserve its handcrafted brand spirit through unprecedented growth and, at the same time, help fuel employment for people with disabilities.
