Situation

Cornwall County Council has run the Cornwall Festival of Cycling for the past 6 years. Each year the event grows and attracts more and more interest from the public and local schools. The event takes place in late June/early July each year with a mix of in-school Bikeability training and three public roadshows over consecutive weekends in Falmouth, Penzance and Truro.

Our solution

In partnership with Pennine Events we put together a fun and varied programme for schools and the public.

Bikeability training was delivered over the first two weeks of the festival with school roadshows on the Fridays of each week. The third week saw roadshows in five different primary schools across West Cornwall. Each Saturday we held Public Roadshows in Penzance, Truro and Falmouth.

The bikeability training involved pupils in two secondary schools being trained to Level 2, and the whole of their Year 7 pupil groups taking part in the roadshows. 30 children in two primary schools were trained to Bikeability Level 1. At the roadshows, in both secondary and primary schools, a total of nearly 800 pupils had the opportunity to try out various types of bikes including KMX karts. We were also able to offer a trike for some disabled children, enabling them to take part alongside their peers.

The public roadshows again had different types of bikes to try out, including the trike, KMX karts and a tandem. These were all extremely useful, again enabling a number of disabled children to have a go. We also offered advice to visitors, for example, on types of bikes and training available. The roadshows also saw specialist cyclists demonstrating uni-cycles, penny farthings - we even had a cycling police clown!

Benefits

• An increase in visitor numbers year on year

• Cornwall County Council have an increasingly positive reputation for encouraging cycling

• The event ran like clockwork and was delivered on-time and on-budget

There are events throughout the country including cycling breakfasts, cycle shows and cycle rides. BikeRight! working in partnership with Manchester City council has organised various events during Bike Week since 2006. Each year gets bigger and better! Our solution

including commuting, leisure cycling and mountain biking

Case studyPride Sports expedition

Situation

The challenge was to take the Pride Sports men’s group on a three day expedition ride from Sheffield to Manchester. The ride’s finale would be to ride into Alexandra Park in South Manchester, in time for the start of the Manchester Pride Sports weekend.

Our solution

We risk assessed the best option as a largely off-road route from Sheffield to Manchester via Castleton, the Peak Forest Canal towpath and Marple. The route was nearly 50 miles in length with plenty of challenging terrain to keep the group on their toes. The first day’s ride started at Endcliffe Park in Sheffield and took in Stanedge Pole and Hathersage before finishing at Castleton in the heart of the Peak District.

Torrential rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the group who were eager to ride despite the weather. On arrival in Castleton the group got changed and headed for a well deserved meal in the village.

Day two started with much better weather and took the group to Linnet Clough near Marple via a long climb to the top flanks of Mam Tor followed by country roads, bridleways and canal paths until the final rocky climb up to Linnet Clough and a warm bunk house.

Day three was sunny too thankfully. The expedition’s final leg from Linnet Clough to Manchester took the group along canal tow paths, national cycle routes and the Fallowfield loop to finish in Alexandria Park. As the group rode into the park a crowd awaited to cheer them on to the finish line. A great end to a fantastic few days riding in beautiful countryside.

Benefits

• Many in the group had low self esteem and lacked confidence, this was soon replaced by a healthy “give it a go” attitude

• A number have now taken up cycling and are pursuing other sports to keep themselves active

Case studySt Philips CofE school event

Situation

Bikeability cycle training at St Philips CofE school had been delivered on many previous occasions by our Warrington team of instructors. The local Church wanted to run a one day cycling event at the school that would appeal not just to the pupils but also the wider community, including families, parents and other local children.

Our solution

The event centred on the school’s playgrounds. We conducted a risk assessment a week beforehand and again on set-up day. We assisted the church and school on promotion of the event to the community.

Throughout the day level 1 Bikeability was delivered to year 4 children and younger. Helmets were also provided by BikeRight! to all children in order that nobody missed out on the fun. Explanations and methods of teaching were later provided to allow parents to see how the benefits and outcomes have changed since their own experience of the Cycling Proficiency test.

Within the space visitors were able to make use of a Dr. Bike facility: to see for themselves and have explained any minor repairs or adjustments to either adult or children’s bicycles.

One very popular activity across all age groups featured bike tryouts: BMX, mountain bikes, scooters and KMX carts could be ridden within a specially designed and challenging track.

As well as being able to use a variety of equipment we opened up a dialogue with the children and adults about the benefits of cycling to health, wellbeing and sustainability and discussed suitability of different bikes via a brief commentary narrative whilst they took part.

Benefits

• Opportunity to promote cycling as a healthy choice of activity

• Level 1 training delivered to younger children than would otherwise be the case

• A successful event to put in people’s diaries for years to come

• Extra money raised to support the church

“Would be definitely recommending a repeat of the day to all relevant parties in order for the event to be in place for 2010 and beyond”

Type: Health rides

Location:Greater Manchester Parks

Frequency:Easter to October each year

Number of people:More than 260 in 2009 over 26 sessions

Case studyPACE - cycling for health

Situation

North Manchester Primary Care Trust have been offering health sessions since 2003. The sessions run between Easter and October and take place in Brookdale Park, Newton Heath, Boggart Hole Clough, Crumpsall Park and Clayton Vale. The PCT wanted to include cycling as one of the health session activities.

Our solution

We put together a programme of rides in all locations that were suitable for all ages and abilities. The sessions are held on Monday mornings from 9 to 11.30 am, come rain or shine.

Most of the attendees have been re-taught how to ride a bike and in some cases taught from scratch as they had never ridden a bike in their life. Their confidence grows every week as does their capacity for cycling. Their health and wellbeing improves too.

We attended the monthly PACE social event to hand out information about the sessions and to encourage people to come and have a go. Staff from the PCT attend the cycling sessions as part of their ‘bank time’

We supply bikes and helmets for all the sessions. We purchased a new fleet of bikes, both men- and women-specific designs, step-through and lightweight models that could be exclusively used for the health rides.

Year by year itinerary: • 2003 PACE at Brookdale Park and at

Philips Park• 2004 PACE at Brookdale Park including

the PACE triathlon swim, walk and cycle where participants won prizes for attending all 3 sessions more than 5 times

• 2005 - 2009 PACE at Brookdale Park, Boggart Hole Clough, Crumpsall Park

Benefits

• Improved health and wellbeing of all those who take part

• Everyone learnt new skills• New friendships forged• A healthy alternative to medication

“The cycling makes me feel good despite my bad back and puts me in a good mood. It also gets me out of the house to meet new people”
