4.4.2 Monitor Control Settings

FIGURE 4.4: BrightSign PlayerConfiguration Tool for Carousel,Monitor Control Settings

Power Save Monitor Control

All BrightSign players offer the ability to disable the video output on both theHDMI and VGA ports. Disabling the video output typically causes the displayto enter power save mode and will enter standby or power off completely. Somedisplays enter power save immediately while others may wait up to 10 minutes. Thetime to enter power save is determined by the display and not the BrightSign player.Power save is configured for each player using the BrightSign Player ConfigurationTool

Step 1: Complete Section 4.3 on page 25, Basic Configuration up to Step 8 on the previouspage

Step 2: Select Power Save under the Monitor Control tab.

Step 3: Set the desired on and off times for the display.

The player will adhere to the time zone specified under the Time tab.

Step 4: Continue with Step 8 on the preceding page, Basic Configuration and complete.

RS-232 Monitor Control

Some BrightSign players provide functionality for sending serial commands via RS-232 at specified times for turning the connected display on and off. This requires adisplay supporting RS-232 control and a connection via RS-232 from the BrightSignplayer to the display. The on and off commands are configured for each playerusing the BrightSign Player Configuration Tool.

Page 29: Carousel Deployment Guide - Amazon S3

We are providing a simple tool to allow dealers and/or end users to pass serialon/off commands to displays. This functionality is not intended to be exhaustiveor replace more advanced control systems such as AMX or Crestron. We havetested this functionality against a small set of displays to ensure the commandsare passed correctly. We have not tested all major display brands, and are notstoring a library of serial commands, RS-232 pin-outs, or baud rates. Pleasework directly with the display manufacturer to obtain the correct configurationsettings.

Step 1: Complete Section 4.3 on page 25, Basic Configuration up to Step 8 on page 26

Step 2: Select RS-232 under the Monitor Control tab.

Step 3: Set the desired on and off times for the display.

The player will adhere to the time zone specified under the Time tab.

Step 4: Enter the serial string for both the monitor on and off commands along with baudrate as specified by the display manufacturer.

Our application is designed to natively support Hexadecimal commands withproper handling of spaces, which enables you to paste the on/off commands andbaud rate provided by the display’s manufacturer without converting to bytes.

Step 5: Continue with Step 8 on page 26, Basic Configuration and complete.

4.4.3 Syncronization Settings

Player synchronization is utilized for a video wall or any set of displays/playersintended to transition between bulletins simultaneously. To configure player syn-chronization complete the following steps.

All players must play single zone channels only.! →Video wall displays/players are typically named or numbered starting on the topleft, moving across the top row, and then beginning again on the left side of the nextrow down.

For best results, we recommend using .MP4 or .MOV containers for video files thatwill be synchronized across a video wall.

FIGURE 4.5: BrightSign PlayerConfiguration Tool for Carousel,Synchronization Settings

Step 1: Complete Section 4.3 on page 25, Basic Configuration up to Step 8 on page 26

Step 2: Select the Synchronization tab and check the Enable Synchronization box.

4 BrightSign for Carousel Software 28

Page 30: Carousel Deployment Guide - Amazon S3

Step 3: Select Master or Slave. The master player dictates the timing of all bulletin transitions for the synchronizedplayers. There can be only one master player. It is typically the top left player on avideo wall. All other players comprising the video wall will be set to slave.

Step 4: Specify a domain number (between 0 and 127). This number must be unique foreach video wall on the network. This will ensure that multiple video walls can runon the same local network without synchronization messages interfering with eachother.

Step 5: Continue with Step 8 on page 26, Basic Configuration and complete.

4.5 Notes

4.5.1 Portrait Mode

No configuration is required on the BrightSign player to enable portrait mode. TheBrightSign player automatically rotates content 90 degrees clockwise when theCarousel channel’s height is greater than its width.

4.5.2 Automated Update Process

Tightrope and BrightSign will continue developing player enhancements and fea-tures well into the future. When a new software and/or firmware update is releasedit will be quick and easy to deploy. Simply install the latest release on the Carouselserver. The BrightSign XD and XD2 media players periodically check the serverfor new firmware and script updates, and will automatically download and installthe updates once they are detected.

Software and Firmware versions included in the BrightSign DeploymentServer for Carousel are dependent on one another. Newer versions of firmwareare sometimes available on the BrightSign website, but should not be down-loaded and installed, as it will not be supported with our Carousel for BrightSignPlayers software. New versions of firmware will become available with eachnew release of BrightSign for Carousel

, after it has been qualified.

4.5.3 Device Recovery

The BrightSign XD and XD2 media players monitor the health of the file structureon the unit’s SD card. If the unit determines the file structure is unhealthy it willdownload a fresh set of script files and reboot itself. Additionally, if an SD cardfails, a blank SD card can be placed in the unit. The player will download the latestscript files from the server, reboot and play its latest Carousel channel content onceagain.

5 Separate SQL Server

This section is for Pros Only. We will not explain SQL concepts here. If you’rehaving trouble understanding the concepts, you will need to seek paid assistancefrom Tightrope Media Systems or one of our qualified installation partners.

The databases for FrontDoor and Carousel store user logins, settings and the lists ofbulletins. The database can be hosted on the web server or a seperate server. Thedatabase can be installed via a “.sql” script provided in the Carousel or CarouselFramework installers. Carousel can use Integrated or SQL authentication to logininto the database server.

5.1 Requirements

• Microsoft SQL Server 2008, or higher (Express Edition is acceptable)

• Microsoft .NET Framework v4.0

5.2 Installation

Step 1: Complete Steps 1 through 69 from Server Software Installation, skipping SQLServer Express Installation.

When running the FrontDoor and Carousel or Carousel Framework installers, there is no reason to run the SQL scripts. If you do, you will get an error. Simplyignore and carry on.

Step 2: Copy the FrontDoor50-CreateDB.sql, FrontDoor50-PopulateDB.sql and Carousel50.sqlfiles from D:\TRMS\Database\Scripts to the database server.

Your drive letter may be different depending on the directory chose when in-stalling Carousel.

Step 3: Modify the FrontDoor50-CreateDB.sql and Carousel50.sql scripts’ “CREATE DATABASE”commands to an existing physical path where you would like the database filescreated at.

There is one path for the “.MDF” file and another for the “.LDF” file.

Step 4: Using a management console or oSql command, run the FrontDoor50-CreateDB.sqlscript.

Step 5: From the Command Prompt, run the following:

“C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regsql.exe -E-d FrontDoor50 -A mrp”

This will populate the database with the ASP.NET roles and memberships forthe web server.

Step 6: Using a management console or oSql command, run the FrontDoor50-PopulateDB.sqlscript.

Step 7: Using a management console or oSql command, run the Carousel50.sql script.

Step 8: Make sure you have a login for the web server that can access the SQL server andboth the FrontDoor50 and Carousel50 databases.

Step 9: Modify the SQL connection strings in the following “.config” files using a texteditor (such as Notepad or WordPad).

• “D:\TRMS\Web\FrontDoor\web.config”

• “D:\TRMS\Web\Carousel\web.config”

• “D:\TRMS\Services\Carousel\TRMS.Services.Carousel.exe.config”

• “D:\TRMS\Services\TimeSync\TRMS.Services.TimeSync.exe.config”

• “D:\TRMS\Tools\Clone.exe.config”

Your drive letter may be different depending on the directory chose when in-stalling Carousel.

Be sure to check that the filetype is “.config” as there are similarly namedfiles in the same folders ending in “.config.latest”.

Also, make sure you set all of the connection string entries in the files. TheTRMS.Services.Carousel.exe.config, in particular, has two entries related toCarousel.

The following is an example connection string:“<add name="CarouselConnectionString" connectionString="datasource=127.0.01;User=myuser;Password=mypassword;initialcatalog=Carousel50;" />”

Step 10: Continue with Step 70 on page 18 of System Licensing.

6 Separate Media Directory

This section is for Pros Only. We will not explain IIS concepts here. If you’rehaving trouble understanding the concepts, you will need to seek paid assistancefrom Tightrope Media Systems or one of our qualified installation partners.

If your media is on a separate network attached storage (NAS) device, configure thenew media store by copying the current media, verifying the Windows permissionson the new media directory, configuring the Carousel web UI, Carouse service andIIS to use the path, then test it.

6.1 Installation

Step 1: Complete all of the steps from Server Software Installation.

Step 2: Navigate to the D:\TRMS\Web\Carousel\ directory.

Your drive letter may be different depending on directory chose when installingCarousel.

Step 3: In a separate Explorer window, open up the network drive.

Step 4: Move the “Media” folder to the network drive so the path to be used is “\\NetworkDrive\Media”.

Step 5: Set the security properties of the new media directory so that the Carousel serviceand web application pool will be able to read and write to this location.

Step 6: Find and replace the following code in the file listed. . .

File Location“D:\TRMS\Web\Carousel\web.config”

Original Code“<!-<add key="MediaPath"value="D:\Some\Other\Path\To\Media\Folder\" />->”

Replacement Code“<add key="MediaPath" value="\\NetworkDrive\Media" />”

Example: “<add key="MediaPath" value="\\CarouselMedia\Media" />”

Step 7: Find and replace the following code in the file listed. . .

File Location“D:\TRMS\Services\Carousel\TRMS.Services.Carousel.exe.config”

Original Code“<!-add key="MediaDirectory" value="D:\Path\To\Media" /->”

Replacement Code“<add key="MediaDirectory" value="\\NetworkDrive" />”

Example: “<add key="MediaDirectory" value="\\CarouselMedia" />”

32

Page 34: Carousel Deployment Guide - Amazon S3

These entries are different, as the service automatically appends the “\Media”to the end of the value.

Be sure that the filetype is “.config” as there are similarly named files in thesame folders ending in “.config.latest”.

Step 8: Next, restart the Carousel service so it picks up the new settings.

Substep A: Open a Command Prompt window and type “net stop Carousel”,press ENTER.

Substep B: When that command finishes, type “net start Carousel”, and pressENTER.
