“But under the beaming, constant and almost vertical sun of Virginia, shade is our Elysium. In the absence of this, no beauty of the eye can be enjoyed.” -Thomas Jefferson

At the intersection of Emmet Street and University Avenue, The Nest acts as a new gateway to Central Grounds, one which recalls Thomas Jefferson’s vision for a University botanical garden. The Nest is both a built and natural shaded canopy of trees, an arborium for gathering and engaging in democratic discourse. Within The Nest and it’s surrounding arborium, visitors and University members alike may gather under the

shade of a shared canopy to confront problems, collaborate alongside peers, and develop solutions to issues of democracy. Situated on such a prominent location to the entry of the University, The Nest welcomes visitors into its spatial park, a nest of interwoven natural and man-made elements that, together, blur the distinction between landscape and architecture.

AGRICULTURE + URBANISM | GROWTH PATTERNS OVER TIMECARLY TOMINOVICH | ARCH 4010This set of maps and infographs explores the relationship between agricultural and urban land growth over time, focusing particularly on the time period between 2000 and 2018 in order to make informed projections about the future of agriculture in Winneba through 2050. Between 2000 and 2018, Winneba underwent a significant growth in agricultural land coverage, increasing its arable land by 272.5 ha., a rapid growth rate that is projected into the future assuming the growth rate remains constant per 18 years. At the same time, the urban population continues to grow by about 3% per year, causing an outward sprawl from the condensed downtown into open, fertile cropland. If such patterns seen now persist through 2050, the growing agricultural and urban systems will compete for the open land that is currently designated by Ramsar as the Muni Lagoon’s Critical Area. In the future, there will ultimately not be enough room for the systems to continue growing considering the rapid rate at which they are growing now.
