Term 2 - Week 6 Thursday 31 May 2012
Principal’s Report
Dear Parents & Carers,
During recent newsletters you will have noticed many references
to Kidsmatter – the new framework for student wellbeing
that is being introduced to our school. We are planning an exciting,
special, whole day event to launch Kidsmatter and we would like
you to participate. Today I advise that the date for this special event
will be Thursday 19 July. This is in the first week of Term 3. More details about the day will be finalised and
publicised to you very soon. It will involve every student and teacher in the school and hopefully many parents.
National Reconciliation Week- A message from the Director-General
27 May – 3 June 2012
National Reconciliation Week gives us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the history, culture,
achievements and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The week starts and finishes by marking two significant anniversaries: the 1967 referendum (27 May) and the
20th anniversary of the Mabo decision (3 June).
The 1967 referendum gave the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples and to recognise them in the national Census.
The High Court's Mabo decision legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a
special relationship to the land, which existed prior to European colonisation and continues today.
Both landmark events provided recognition to Aboriginal people. The theme of National Reconciliation Week
2012 is Let's Talk Recognition.
Recognition is the starting point for friendship and understanding. Reconciliation involves building positive,
respectful relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people so we can work together to close the
gaps in Aboriginal disadvantage.
During National Reconciliation Week take the time in your schools, TAFE institutes, workplaces, suburbs and
towns to recognise the unique contribution of Aboriginal people in our communities.

The School Voluntary Contribution Payment (Repeat Item)
The NSW Government allows each school in the state to request from each family an amount of money to help
pay for the many consumable items used by children every day or to support special programs and projects that
the school community determines as necessary in the school. The School Voluntary Contribution Payment is
requested annually and most families in the Carlton community pay the contribution. It raises around $15,000
that allows us to equip each classroom with many of the consumable items that are used daily in our large school.
It is also used to replace home and guided readers that get worn and damaged through regular use. This is a
high priority item in the school budget this year and we need your support to provide the best possible

resources for your children. This week each family will receive a letter outlining the payment and the details as
to how it can be paid. I have deliberately left this request a little later this year so that families could be well
settled into school before it was made. As in past years we will be running an incentive scheme for families who
pay the contribution before Wednesday 27 June which is in Week 10 of this Term. Three lucky draws of $50
Shopping vouchers will be made at the end of term K-6 Assembly from the names of all families who have paid
by that time. Help us out and also give yourself a chance at something extra!
Congratulations to:
Miss Lisa McNab who has been appointed to a fulltime teaching position at Rainbow Street Public
School, following a successful merit selection process recently. She will start at the new school from
the commencement of Term 3. A replacement for Miss McNab as our teacher of Indonesian will be
announced as soon as possible.
Mrs Linda Mallios who has been a long term temporary teacher at Carlton, has now been appointed
permanently to the staff.
Reminders:
The second session of the Chinese Parent Forum will be held at the school from 9.30am on Friday 1 June
The School Voluntary Contribution Payment can be paid anytime up until 27 June.
The ICAS Science Competition is on Wednesday 6 June. Students are reminded to be at school at 7.45
for the early start to this test.
The Life Education program commences on Thursday 7 June
The Kindergarten excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm is on Thursday 7 June
The school canteen will be closed at 3:00pm each afternoon during the winter months of June, July and
August
Regards
Steve Cooper

Calling all Carlton Cooks! The P&C is considering printing a school cookbook in Term 4 to celebrate the many diverse cultures in our
school. It would make a special gift for friends or family. Cookbooks from our own school days often hold very
dear family recipes that are used time and time again. In order to begin our planning the P&C is asking for you
to consider two things:
- whether you or someone you know would be interested in taking out an advertisement or sponsor a page
in the cookbook. You may have your own business, have friends in business or work for a business that
may be interested.
- to find one of your own recipes to contribute to the cookbook. This may be a family recipe that has
been handed down through the generations, one that is a family favourite or even one that the kids
make themselves.
Further details will be sent home in the coming weeks.
P&C Meeting The next P&C Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 12 June at 7.30pm. All parents are welcome to attend.
Banking -1K winners again! Congratulations to IK who were winners of the Dollarmites Achievement Certificate this week. This award is
given each week to the class who has the most children banking each Tuesday. Many classes are so close to
winning this award but just need all their bankers to make a deposit to win. Will it be 3T again or can another
class have enough bankers to claim the award? Stay tuned!

Some Tips To help us with school banking we ask you to please remember the following:
- take out tokens once they have been sent home and keep them in a safe place. When 10 tokens have
been collected then they can be sent back in with a redemption slip to redeem a reward.
- gold tokens are a keepsake only and can’t be used to redeem rewards. They are sent home attached to
the child’s certificate along with their reward in exchange for 10 silver tokens.
- to fill out the deposit slip (and for the day you are banking only).
School Banking Competition This week many students would have received a note in their yellow school banking wallet saying that they are
now eligible to enter the competition to be the new Dollarmite. Please remember to enter. It would be great if
a Carlton PS student will be the new Dollarmite. There are only 4 school banking days left until the competition
closes. Many children are very close to being eligible to enter. Who will be the new Dollarmite?
This great competition is being run this term to celebrate the centenary of the Commonwealth Bank. To be part
of the competition to find Australia’s best School Banking Saver, all you have to do is:
Make five (5) deposits through school banking between 16 April and 30 June 2012 and then;
Complete the entry form at www.commbank.com.au/beadollarmite and in 25 words or less give your
best savings tip.
The winning student will be transformed into their very own Dollarmite character and:
Win an annual movie pass for their family
Win 25 Apple IPads for their school
Win $1500- towards a school excursion
There are 50 runner up prize packs that include IPads, movie passes, excursions and thousands of Dollarmite

term.
You would be working in a team, together with our other parent volunteers.

reading. PLUS, running Book Club rewards both the school and the students with FREE resources.

Tax Rebate for School Items
The Australian Government announced in the 2012 Budget that the Education Tax Refund (ETR) would be
replaced by a new payment called the Schoolkids Bonus. You cannot claim the ETR for 2011-12.
As part of the transition to the new Schoolkids Bonus, the ETR for 2011-12 will be paid out in full to all eligible
families as a one-off payment from 20 June 2012. If you do not receive a one-off payment in June, you can
contact the Department of Human Services to test whether you may be entitled to a payment for the 2011-12
financial year. From 1 January 2013, you may be eligible for the Schoolkids Bonus to assist with education
expenses. For more information about the Schoolkids Bonus go to humanservices.gov.au and search for
Schoolkids Bonus.

Transit of Venus On the 6 June, Venus is due to pass directly between Earth and the Sun. This means that, when observed from
Earth, Venus will look like a tiny black sphere gliding against the yellow backdrop of the Sun. This phenomenon is
known as the transit of Venus. It was last to occur in 2004, and is not due to take place again until December
2117.
Transits of Venus are valuable phenomena. In the past, they were accurately observed to solve problems such as
the distance between Earth and the Sun and, subsequently, between Earth and other planets—Venus included.
One such observation, it must be noted, was conducted by James Cook himself in 1769. At the time, he was
dispatched to Tahiti on HMS Endeavour for the sole purpose of recording the event. It was following that
particular observation that he sailed south in search of "the great south land" and, in the process, discovered
Australia.

Cyberbullying (taken from- http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Kids/Tips) The same rules apply online as in the ‘real world’ about how to treat other people. Unfortunately, people don’t
always treat each other well online, and you, or a friend, may find that you are the target of cyberbullying. You
might be teased or have rumours spread about you online, receive nasty messages or even threats. It can
happen in school, or out of it, any hour of the day, from people you know, and sometimes people you don’t know.
It can leave you feeling unsafe and alone.
No-one has the right to bully another person. At its most serious, cyberbullying is illegal and can be
investigated by the police.
Tips
If you are being cyberbullied
Ignore it. Don’t respond to the bully. If they don’t get a response they may get bored and go away.
Block the person. This will stop you seeing messages or texts from a particular person.
Tell someone. Tell your mum or dad, or another adult you trust. Or you can call Kids Helpline on 1800 55
1800, visit their website or contact the Cybersmart Online Helpline service.
Keep the evidence. This can be useful in tracking the bully down. Save texts, emails, online
conversations or voicemails as proof.
Report it to:
o your school—they should have policies in place about bullying and cyberbullying.
o your ISP and/or phone provider or the website administrator—there are actions they can take
to help.
o the police—if there is a threat to your safety the police will help. Call Triple Zero (000) or
Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
If a friend is being cyberbullied It can be hard to know if your friends are being cyberbullied. They might keep it to themselves. If they are
being cyberbullied, you might notice that they may not chat with you online as much, suddenly receive lots of
SMS messages or are unhappy after they have been on the computer or checked their phone messages. They
may stop hanging around with friends or have lost interest in school or social activities.
Help stop cyberbullying
Stand up and speak out! If you see or know about cyberbullying happening to a friend, support them
and report the bullying. You’d want them to do the same for you.
Don’t forward on messages or pictures that may hurt or be upsetting to someone. Even though you may
not have started it, you will be seen to be part of the cyberbullying cycle.
Remember to treat others as you would like to be treated when communicating online.

St George Dragons Relay Race
On Saturday night at 6:00pm, six superb relay runners competed against other schools in a Dragons relay match
at WIN Jubilee Stadium. The students were Jessie K, Aya F, Lucy K, Jason T, Reece W and Alexander H. Our
enthusiastic teacher, Mrs Howard encouraged us to do our best and we excelled by coming fourth. We all ran
swiftly and we beat many of the other schools. It was an extremely close game but what mattered most was
that we all did our best. After the run, we received a little present. The present was an awesome little squishy
football and a Dragon poster. It was a cold day but we stayed to watch the thrilling match of the St George
Dragons playing against the Parramatta Eels. Obviously, the Dragons won 14 to 12.

Kurnell Excursion- A recount by Louisa 3A
On Monday 28 May, Year 3 went to Kurnell to learn more about Captain James Cook.
First we went to the museum to learn about what happened on Captain James Cook’s journey. Then we looked at
the model of the Endeavour ship. After we went to a room to see the cannon that Captain James Cook had on
his ship. Next we went to the room that had Captain James Cook’s journal during his trip to Botany Bay.
After recess Year 3 dressed up to play the roles from the landing. I was one of the Monk House Brothers.
Later on we went bushwalking. John, accompanied 3A on the bushwalk. He taught 3A the bird calls to
communicate with the birds. He showed us two Aboriginal tools. During lunch John said that 3A could have a
throw of the boomerang.
I had an interesting excursion because I learnt lots of facts about Captain James Cook.
