Fall NewsletterSeptember 2017
President’s Message
After the “Great Recession” of 2009, Carlisle Fish and Game saw a significant decline in
membership as discretionary income dwindled and people needed to be more careful where
they spent money. The last few years has seen a resurgence in memberships and we are now
approaching 1,900 members, which exceeds pre-2009 levels. New members continuously
reiterate that they were influenced in joining by our fantastic facilities and welcoming spirit. We
all share a common love of the outdoors and shooting sports. Please keep up the good work
in making Carlisle Fish and Game a go-to club for hunting, fishing and outdoor sports in the
region.
The Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and Committee Members continue to deliver an
excellent membership product at Carlisle Fish and Game. We continue to invest in equipment
to keep our facilities and our programs state of the art. We are also always looking for
volunteers who are willing to serve on a Committee and support specific programs. This is
generally a thankless role so please take a moment to thank Committee Members around the
Club when you see them.
Our Board of Directors meets at 7 p.m. the second Monday of every month and Club Members
are welcome to attend. If you have an issue you would like to discuss with the Board, please
reach out in advance of the meeting and we will be sure to put you on the agenda. Likewise,
our 4 membership meetings are the first Wednesday of January, May, September and
October, and are an opportunity to hear a report from each of the Committees, and to
communicate directly with the Board and the Officers. We always open the floor to discussion
or comment from any member at these meetings.
As we enter the fall hunting seasons, take some time to appreciate the wonderful freedoms we
have as Americans to own and possess firearms and to hunt and fish on significant amounts of
public land. As you think about those freedoms, make sure to thank a current or former
member of the armed forces for their service defending them for all of us.

Hunter Safety / Hunting Law Update
2017 has been another successful year in the Hunter Safety Program. We had three classes,
and averaged around 70 students per class. 2016 marked my 10th year teaching Hunter
Safety. In that 10 years we have seen over 2,000 students take the class at Carlisle Fish and
Game.
Our Hunter Safety instructors meet with Pennsylvania Game Commission staff for an annual
instructor training. This year, a significant focus of that training was on chronic wasting
disease in deer. This is a significant issue that affects all hunters. We have had documented
cases of chronic wasting disease in multiple counties in Pennsylvania that led the Game
Commission to create Disease Management Areas. Special rules apply to deer harvested in a
disease management area, and it is critically important that these rules be followed as they are
presently the best method to prevent the spread of this disease.
A significant change in Pennsylvania’s game laws occurred this year relating to the use of
semi-automatic rifles in hunting. While semi-automatic rifles remain illegal for hunting big
game (deer, bear, elk), they can now be used for small game and furbearer hunting.
Another significant change hunters are finding this year is that the Pennsylvania Hunting and
Trapping Digest is no longer free when you purchase a hunting license. You can purchase a
copy of the digest for $6, or print a copy on-line or view the digest online for free.
Make sure you always practice safe hunting skills while in the field, and practice
marksmanship by utilizing the facilities at Carlisle Fish and Game. Have a safe, and therefore
successful, 2017-18 hunting season!

YOUTH NRA BASICS OF SHOTGUN SHOOTING COURSE
CF&G is committed to growing membership in the shooting sports. To that end, we periodically conduct training sessions for youth to teach them safe shooting and spark their interest in the shooting sports. The Skeet committee hosted a youth-only, CF&G sponsored, NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting course at the end of August, beginning on Sunday 27 August at 3 PM. This 10-hour course, conducted over four evening sessions, combines classroom instruction andlive shooting to train shooters how to safely and successfully shoot a shotgun at a movingtarget, how to purchase, store, and maintain a shotgun, and the various opportunities toparticipate in shotgun shooting activities. Skeet committee member and NRA Instructor FredGellert led this course. Club members Al Alinio, Tom Wolfe, and Chuck Essig (NRA instructor)assisted with the shooting events. NRA instructor Bill Reiner assisted in conducting the course.
We had 9 boys ages 11-14 complete the course. Several of them had never before shot a shotgun. Despite some rain on the first night of shooting, motivation remained high throughout. Future courses include more youth classes, an adult class, and eventually training to become an NRA shotgun instructor.
Archery season is coming soon, and there are great practice opportunities at the club. The field range has been refurbished and signs have been added to show the direction of travel. Just follow the orange arrow heads. Some old 3D targets have been added just to make it more realistic and provide better practice. There is a broad head target below the tree stand, and this is the only place on the course they can be shot.
We have handmade moose and bison targets, and thanks go to John Harding for all of that hard work. He built them in his garage over the last two winters, and they're a great chance to practice on life-sized targets.
We have three 3D shoots in September. Open shoots (any type of bow) on September 10th and 24th. Traditional equipment shoot on September 17th.
Whether you just shoot for fun, are a bowhunter, or shoot a crossbow, there are great practice opportunities here. Come on out and shoot.
Best of luck in the woods this year!
