Advantages of the Carlisle-Desroches Quidditch Hoop DesignModular and Portable

Carlisle-Desroches hoops are easily assembled and taken apart. This makes for easy transport and storage, and in case

of damage, it is simple to replace one part of the base-pole-hoop assembly. Assembly is no more difficult in cold weather than in warm

weather.

Durable and safeThe Carlisle-Desroches hoops have no moving parts—there is nothing to screw or unscrew when putting together or taking apart. The concrete bases can be left outside in the rain or snow without being damaged or stolen. (Who would steal a heavy bucket with concrete in it?) There are no sharp edges or pointy parts.

AffordableThis design saves money on replacement hula-hoops and duct tape, due to its durability. A set of six base-pole-hoop assemblies with four extra hoops (the hardware store only sells tubing in quantities of 100 feet) costs $153.17.

Excellent for Quidditch gameplayMost importantly, the Carlisle-Desroches hoops have been extensively field-

tested by the McGill Quidditch Team, and found to be excellent for use in Quidditch. The concrete bases do not fall over under any conditions. The hoops do not tip over. In the case that the hoop has turned along

the axis of the pole by being struck with a quaffle (or a player), it can be returned to its correct orientation in seconds.

BudgetDescription Quantity Unit price Cost Cost per hoop

2-Gallon Plastic Bucket 6 $3.58 $21.48 $3.58

30 kg Bag of Cement 1 $3.46 $3.46 $0.58

1–1.5” ABS Coupling 6 $0.49 $2.94 $0.49

1–1.5” x 6ʼ ABS pipes 5 $8.59 $42.95 $7.16

1”x1”x1” Insert Tee Junction 6 $0.80 $4.80 $0.80

100ʼ Green Line 100 PSI CSA 1” Tubing

1 $61.58 $61.58 $6.16

1” Clamping Collars 12 $1.33 $15.96 $2.66

Total $153.17 $21.42

Because the tubing is sold in lengths of 100 feet, which makes 10 hoops rather than the necessary 6, approximately $25 per set of 6 hoops could be saved if base-pole-hoop assemblies were mass produced.

Costs may vary depending on your particular hardware store.

You will need to buy ...

12Twelve 1” clamping collars

1One 100-foot length of green line 100 PSI CSA 1” tubing

Five 1-1.5” x 6ʼ ABS pipes

5Six 1-1.5” couplings6

6Six 2-gallon plastic buckets

1One 30 kg bag of cement

6Six 1”x1”x1” insert tee junctions

Also, you will need to borrow a big kitchen knife, a flat-head screwdriver, a hair-dryer and a tape measure.

Ask at your hardware store. Likely, they can cut your ABS pipes for you!

Cut one of your 6ʼ ABS pipes in half. Cut two to a length of 4.5ʼ. This will give you two 1.5ʼ pipes. Cut these two 1.5ʼ pipes into 6 six-inch pipes.

Do not cut the remaining two 6ʼ pipes.

You now have two ABS pipes of length 6ʼ, two of length 4.5ʼ, two of

length 3ʼ and six of length 6”.

Cut your 100ʼ length of green line 100 PSI CSA 1” tubing into 10 equal 10-foot lengths. You

can do this with a kitchen knife. Watch your fingers!

Then, cut eight inches from the end of each of your 10-foot lengths.

You now have ten lengths of 9ʼ4” and ten lengths of 8”.

Mix cement and distribute among the 6 buckets. Donʼt put all of the cement in! 30kg is a lot! Only put enough to keep the

bucket from falling over during a game and to keep a 6” piece of ABS upright in the bottom.

Remember—someone is going to have to carry these to and from each practice! Read step 4 before allowing cement to dry.

Before the concrete sets, place one of the 6” pieces of ABS upright at the

bottom of the bucket that is now filled with wet concrete. Cover the

ABS enough that it cannot move once the concrete has dried, but make sure that enough of the ABS is above the surface of the concrete

that the rest of the pole can be attached to the 6” piece with the use of a coupling.

Insert a tee junction into one of the eight-inch lengths of tubing. Use a hair-

dryer to warm the end of the tubing before inserting the tee junction.

You tried to do it without the hair-dryer didnʼt you? For shame. Now go borrow a hair-dryer. If you donʼt have one for the next step, youʼll find it exceedingly difficult. 5

Insert the tee junction into one end of one of the 9ʼ4” lengths of tubing.

Then turn the other end of the tubing around and insert the tee junction into

the other end of the 9ʼ4” length, forming a hoop.

If you were able to do step 5 without a hair dryer, you probably tried doing this step without one too. Harder isnʼt it? Go borrow the hair dryer and try again. 6

8

Secure the hoop of tubing onto the tee junction using two 1” clamping collars, one on each side of the neck. It is not necessary to secure the length of tubing that will be pointing downward. Make sure that the screws on the clamping collars are pointing downward, so that players canʼt hit them while in play.

8

7Once the concrete in your base has dried, use one of the couplings to attach your ABS pole to the 6” piece of ABS that has been cemented to the bottom of the bucket. Insert your hoop into the top of the ABS pole.

Repeat steps 3–8 for a total of six bases, poles and hoops. There is enough tubing to make ten hoops.

Decorate your pole and hoops with your teamʼs colours. (This is necessary.)

Youʼre ready for a game of Quidditch!
