    The Caribbean Examinations council (CXC) was established in

    1972by an Agreement among 15 English speaking

    Commonwealth Caribbean Countries and Territories. It has itsheadquarters in Barbados.

    The members of the CXCare:

    0 Anguilla,0 Antigua and Barbuda,

    0 Barbados,

    0 Belize,

    0British Virgin Islands,

    0 Cayman Islands,

    0 Dominica,

    0 Grenada,

    0 Guyana,

    0 Jamaica,0 Montserrat,

    0 St Kitts and Nevis,

    0 Saint Lucia, St Vincent andthe Grenadines,

    0 Trinidad and Tobago,0 Turks and Caicos Islands.

    Objectives

    0 CXCs objectives are to:

    1. Provide regionally and internationally recognised

    secondary school leaving examinations relevant tothe needs of the Region.

    2. Assist in Common Entrance and other types of

    examinations; produce teaching materials and train

    teachers to use the CXC syllabi; and

    3. Advise regional governments on Education matters.

    Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination

    (CAPE)

    0 In 1998, CXC offered the first Caribbean Advanced

    Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in a range of subjects.

    The CAPE scheme is intended to satisfy requirements

    for entry into regional and extra regional universities

    as well as other professional courses.

    Structure of the Council :

    The Council is empowered to regulate the conduct of any suchexaminations and prescribe the qualification requirements ofcandidates and the fees payable by them.

    It currently consists of the following members:

    0 The Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies;

    0 The Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana;

    0 Three representatives of the University of the West Indiesappointed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of the WestIndies, regard being given to the geographic dispersion of thecampuses;

    0 One representative of the University of Guyana appointed bythe Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana;

    0 Two representatives appointed by each of the Participating

    Governments of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad andTobago and one representative appointed by each of the otherParticipating Governments;

    0 One representative of the teaching profession appointed byeach National Committee from among its members.

    CXC Accreditation & Recognition:

    UK National Academic Recognition Information

    Centre (UK NARIC)

    0 From as early as 1999, UK NARIC conducted anassessment of CAPE and agreed that the qualification is

    of the highest standard. Here are excerpts fromChristopher West, Head of UK NARIC:

    I have been impressed by the structure and content ofthe CAPE and in particular the flexibility to offer various

    combinations of breadth and depth. The inclusion ofcore courses is also helpful in preparing students forhigher education in an international context.

    University of the West Indies and

    University of Guyana0 The University of the West Indies and the University ofGuyana have approved that:- Six Units including two single-unit courses, CaribbeanStudies and Communication Studies, be accepted for

    normal matriculation.- Candidates who have passed two 2-Unit courses in asingle area fall within the two Alevelmatriculationstanding.

    0

    CXC continues to work assiduously with other collegesand universities to reach articulation agreements. Asthese agreements are signed they will be posted on thesite.

    Trade marksIn order to protect its name and those of its products and/or services, CXC

    registered several trade marks in 2005 in the United Kingdom and other

    countries. CXC therefore asserts ownership over its name and any other mark,

    logo, seal, design, symbol, internet domain name or any combination of these,

    which have come to be associated with CXC, specifically the following which

    Conflict of Interest Guidelines for ResourcePersons

    0

    On 20 April 2010, a conflict of interest policy for resource personswas adopted by CXCsAdministrative and Finance Committee. This isto ensure that persons affiliated with CXC perform their duties in anunbiased manner, with the highest integrity, free of suspicion, and fairand impartial. Further, the policy will assist CXC in the management ofconflict of interest situations before they arise or when they become

    known.0 Under this new policy, resource persons who are aware, or havereasonable grounds to believe, that actual or potential conflicts ofinterest exist will be required to disclose them to CXC usingthe Statement of Compliance and Disclosure form. Persons who havebeen, or are, involved in the production of published materials areespecially encouraged to take note of the guidelines. The CXC expectsthat resource persons will fully comply with this policy, including allrequirements for disclosure.
