Welcome to the Lady Manners School

Careers Convention 2018

Make use of the information in this booklet to plan your journey

This is a big event! It offers students, parents or carers an opportunity to explore the world of work and the many different pathways to get there.

A number of prominent universities, colleges, companies and training organisations are attending to represent as broad a range of careers as possible. We thank them all for their interest and participation.

How is the convention organised?

You choose how long you stay at the convention and who to speak to/listen to.

Careers Talks: A range of careers talks for students and parents to attend and find out more about specific careers. These are scheduled across the evening.

Delegate stands: For students and parents to talk to people in different job roles or people who organise education and training courses.

Year groups the convention is aimed at?

Year 8: Students will be able to explore many different careers paths that may inspire them to think about their dream job. They will be able to identify with the subjects they are currently studying and recognise the connection with jobs and careers in the real world.

Year 9: Students can get a head start in decision making ahead of choosing their guided subject choices for Years 10 and 11. They can ask employers, colleges and universities about subjects that they should be taking for GCSE. They can find out the qualifications needed for different jobs.

Years 10 & 11: Which pathway to choose after Year 11? A Levels? A vocational course at college or an apprenticeship? What qualifications are needed for that dream job? Will they need to go to university? What other options are available after A Levels? This is an opportunity to impress local employers and talk about potential work experience placements as some may be able to offer placements or even with future apprenticeship opportunities.

Year 12: Students will soon be thinking about university options. What work experience will be needed? Are there volunteering opportunities which may help with applications?

What are the alternatives to higher education? Perhaps a higher or degree level apprenticeship. Are any sponsorships on offer in a career area of interest? Is an apprenticeship a viable option? Some companies may also offer work experience for sixth form students.

Year 13: Students may still have questions about life at university. They may also be looking at apprenticeship options. They can find out more by speaking to as many people as possible at the convention and by attending one or more of the talks.

We trust you will have an enjoyable and informative evening!

Training Providers

Training providers work with employers to support recruitment and training of employees on apprenticeships. Students seeking an apprenticeship can register with these organisations. Also present are DWP/ASK who are experts in their knowledge of apprenticeships, how they are structured and where they are offered at all levels. They can also advise on CVs.

Apprenticeships for Young People

Students can join an apprenticeship at any age after Year 11. Training is usually undertaken in the workplace sometimes supported by off the job study and training. Apprentices work towards industry recognised qualifications.

What are the Levels of Apprenticeship?

The apprenticeship you start at will depend on the qualifications you have, the job role, and apprenticeship standard the employer wants to use. The types of apprenticeship you can start are:

Study Programmes/Traineeships Study Programmes and Traineeships: Prepare young people for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’. As well as work experience, you will be able to improve your maths and English. Following this, you will be ready to move on to an apprenticeship. Juniper Training, DART and Stubbing Court Training offer these programmes.

Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3): Check with training providers and employers the qualifications you will need.

Higher (Level 4) and Degree Level (Level 5) Apprenticeships: Employers generally ask for A Levels or other Level 3 qualifications. The apprenticeship route covers many professions. Make sure you ask universities about these.

These training providers have opportunities for apprenticeships up to Level 3. They are at the convention this evening:

Stubbing Court Training: Stubbing Court Training offer apprenticeships in horse care and management for a range of careers in the equine industry across Derbyshire.

DART Training: DART Training provides training in the agriculture, horticulture, forestry animal care, animal care and veterinary nursing fields.

Age UK: Age UK is a National Training Provider for careers in the social care sector.

Juniper Training: Based in Chesterfield, work with employers across a wide range of employers

Learning Unlimited: Based in Chesterfield, work with employers across a wide range of employers.

Whiterose Beauty College – Sheffield School of Health and Beauty: Nationwide organisation providing specialist training in the beauty industry

Now refer to the grid on the next page. Look for the job area that you are interested in and speak to the training providers that offer apprenticeship training in this area.

Volunteering Opportunities for Young People

You don’t have to wait until you are 18 to research or even start a volunteering placement. Volunteering increases your employability skills, your confidence, social awareness and many different ‘soft skills’ that may not be taught in the classroom.

It’s also a great way to strengthen and build on your CV, and strengthen your personal statement if you are applying to university. It can also support your studies and experience if you are following a Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Find out more from these organisations.

National Citizenship Service

National Citizenship Service (NCS) is open to 16 and 17 year olds in England. It helps you build your skills for work and life while you take on new challenges and meet new friends. It runs in the spring, summer and autumn.

You will have a short time away from home and take part in a team project that will help your community.

Great experience and good for your CV.

Ashgate Hospicecare

Ashgate Hospicecare is an independent registered charity that provides care to patients across North Derbyshire at the hospice, in the community and at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
