Career Pathways Program Expansion! For the 2015-16 School Year, the Career Pathways program has expanded to incorporate
roles that support teachers from Induction through Highly Effective status. The new
framework includes three levels, with each level focusing on activities that promote
individualized development and resources for teachers at all levels of experience, and
expertise.
Emerging Teacher Leader Roles: Campus Induction Coach, Mentor, and TADS Liaison
Established Teacher Leader Roles: Data Tracking and Assessment Specialist (DTAS),
Classroom Culture Specialist (CCS), Instructional Technology Specialist (ITS), Teach Like a
Champion Specialist (TLaCS), and STEM Instructional Specialist (STEM IS)
Expert Teacher Leader Role: Instructional Excellence Coach (IEC)
Teacher Leaders participate in a rigorous selection process, receive robust stipends, and
are responsible for meeting measurable outcomes in their roles. Career Pathways helps
schools recognize, reward, and retain their best teachers. In turn, high performing
teachers expand their influence by building skills, supporting instruction, and specializing
in an area of interest, all without leaving the classroom.

Teach Like a Champion: Engaging Academics! Excellent instruction requires teachers to motivate and
support all students in achieving mastery of rigorous
academic content. Ten HISD Career Pathways Teacher
Specialists and administrators recently traveled to
Washington, D.C. to attend a Teach Like a Champion
(TLaC) workshop entitled "Engaging Academics." This
Train the Trainer event prepared the HISD attendees to
deliver training on seven high impact, high academic
expectation techniques from Doug Lemov's new book
titled, Teach Like A Champion 2.0.

HISD principals are learning the value of TLaC techniques in Washington, D.C.
7 Highlighted Techniques
Cold Call, No Opt Out, Right is Right, Stretch It, Everybody Writes, Wait Time and Check for Understanding build rigor and
substance in teaching as well as help teachers engage students positively in rigorous academic work. HISD teachers will be
able to attend trainings focused on these techniques during TLaC Tuesdays.
TLaC Tuesdays
Teach Like a Champion (TLaC) techniques provide teachers with
the tools necessary for success in all classrooms, particularly those
with the most challenging student populations. The techniques
employed in TLaC are presented in concrete, specific and actiona-
ble ways to allow for immediate use by teachers in any classroom.
This year, TLaC Tuesday’s will be presented twice a month on three
separate campuses within the district (Pin Oak Middle School,
Lanier Middle School and Coop Elementary School), to minimize
travel time and allow teachers to practice techniques in an
authentic classroom setting.
During the month of September, trainings will revolve around
Systems and Routines. In October, teachers will learn 100% and No
Opt Out, two techniques found on the IP Rubric. During November
and December, trainings will concentrate on the important
technique of Check For Understanding. As we return from Winter
Break, trainings will revolve around increasing academic rigor.
