Job Outlook for 2012College GradsBy Colette McLaughlin, ASK Volunteer Coordinator Intern

With constant, sometimes conflicting, reports about the state of thejob market, its natural to worry about life after college. If youre agraduating student or a recent alumnus still on the job hunt, dontpanic! Signs indicate that the job outlook is brightening for youngerworkers. Employers plan to slowly grow their companies, includinghiring more interns and adding entry-level talent to their teams.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers(NACE), employers expect to hire 9.5% more new college graduatesthan they did in 2010-2011. Younger workers overall are seeingmore opportunity. Jobs for 25-to-34-year-olds increased by 116,000to 30.5 million in February 2012, the U.S. Department of Laborreported. The unemployment rate for the same group dropped from9% in January to 8.7%, the lowest since January 2009.

Employers value the fresh perspective and skill set that youngerworkers bring to the table. Many companies that participated inNACEs survey stated that their organizations are too top heavy. Inaddition to increasing hiring due to company expansion and businessgrowth, employers are also looking to replace a retiring workforce, and gain younger talent. Additionally, many employers plan onhiring more interns this year - 8% more than last year. Averageintern pay is projected to be around $16 per hour.

Majors in DemandSimilar to previous years, there is a high demand for finance andaccounting majors. The top seven bachelors degrees in demand arebusiness, engineering, computer sciences, sciences, liberal arts, communications, agriculture & natural resources.

At DePaul, the industries showing the largest growth in jobpostings in DePaul.Experience from 2010 to 2011 areengineering/science/environment, professional services, healthcare/social & human services, academic/education and accounting/finance/banking.

How You Can Stand OutDespite some positive indicators, a job search is still a job search. Ittakes time, persistence and patience. It is important to set yourselfapart in a competitive job market. According to NACE, manyemployers cited work and leadership experience, community service,as well as GPA, as important factors when considering jobcandidates.

    Get Inside Scoop:Company Visits anInformational

InterviewsBy Jacqueline Molina, Editorial Communications Intern

As the years go by and you startapproaching your junior and senior yeaits important to seek out opportunitielearn about the field you plan onpursuing. A little research can help yoprepare for graduation and gain theknowledge needed to land a job in youfield of choice.

A good way to learn about your careerchoice is to attend company visits. The

visits serve as a great tool to network iyour field and get your foot in the dooa company that might interest you.Visiting an organization can help you ga sense of the work environment andoverall company culture, which can heyou determine whether or not a certaincompany is a good fit for you.

In my four years at DePaul Ive attendemany company visits which have taughme a lot about myself and the workenvironment I most enjoy. Company vishave also helped me land internships in

field and expand my network. A visit tothe CBS studios in Chicago even inspireme to pursue an M.A. in journalism.

One of the best resources Ive come acrin seeking out company visitopportunities is DePauls Blue Demonat Work series offered through theAlumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK)network. The program gives you theopportunity to visit a company to meeand network with DePaul alumni worthere. Check out ask.depaul.edu forupcoming visits.

The most sought after qualities in job candidates are teamwork, communication skills, problem solving and decisionmaking skills.

For graduating seniors, remember to include all of your campus involvement, volunteer and work experience on youresume; if you have a high GPA focus on that as well. Employers want to hire well-rounded people!

    Tips for Successful Searching

Build your network - Tap into DePauls Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) network to meet people in

your field of interest. Alumni can provide insight into day-to-day life in a job or company, and suggeststrategies for breaking into a field or organization.

Be flexible - Broaden the number of fields you are considering and apply for plenty of positions, saysAlison Doyle, About.coms job search guide. Attend the Career Centers Create a Career Plan Bworkshop on June 12 for tips on expanding your options and broadening your search.

Intern your way in - You may also consider an internship as a way to get a foot in the door at anorganization and build more experience. An internship can often be a direct pipeline into a full-timeposition; plus it allows both you and your employer to test the waters and see if a position is a good fit.

Were Here to Help!Always remember to utilize Career Center services; we are here to help you! From job postings on DePaul.Experiencto one-on-one career advising, to the Just In Time Job Fair on June 12, weve got services to assist you with thetransition from college to career.

Other great ways to learn about company visitopportunities are to:

    1. Check the DePaul.Experience website. It notonly offers information on events and visits, but is also agood resource to find out about internship and jobopportunities.2. Network with your professors, particularly adjunctfaculty. Many of them are practicing professionals with alot of experience and connections. From my experience, professors are always willing to help you.3. Join student organizations related to your field, suchas PRSSA for PR students or AdVentors for Advertisingstudents, which offer year-round opportunities to visitcompanies/agencies in your field.

Informational interviews are another good way to learnabout your field. During an informational interview youare given the opportunity to have one-on-one time witha professional already working at a company. Whenattending an informational interview you should be verywell-prepared, meaning you should have researched thecompany and have some questions ready. The person

youre meeting with has taken the time out of their day

to meet with you; making a good impression could leato future internship/job connections.

A couple of resources I recommend to connect withworking professionals are the DePaul ASK network andLinkedIn. Both make finding professionals in your fieldand scheduling an informational interview easy. Linkedis also a great resource to stay in touch with professionayou meet at networking events, company visits or othecareer events.

As you make connections, remember to follow-up withprofessionals you meet, particularly those you interactwith during company visits and informationalinterviews. A simple thank you via email or a LinkedInmessage can go a long way in sustaining a professionalrelationship.

Dont let your college years just pass you by. Beproactive about your education and your life afterDePaul. Networking can help set the stage for asuccessful job search come graduation.

Make the Most of Career AdvisingBy Nathan Coleman and Jennifer Schanz

    Career Connectiospring 2012 | pag

The Career Center offers individual career advising sessions with full-

time staff. Many of the staff members work with students in specific

majors and colleges, making each appointment specialized to your

individual career and major-related questions. The career advisors are

available to meet with you to discuss the big questions, like What do I

want to do with my life? and the specific questions; How do I get the

internship I am interested in? This is a resource that can help you

every step of the way, from the beginning stages of considering your

career goals to internship and co-op opportunities to full-time

employment and beyond. The advisors are located at both Lincoln Parkand Loop campuses and work on an appointment basis. It only takes a

quick call or a short detour to our offices to work with one of our front

desk staff to find a convenient time to meet with someone.

Once you make an appointment, there are a couple of very easy things to

do to prepare that can go a long way in getting you the most out of your

visit. First, take a moment to look over the Career Center website at

careercenter.depaul.edu and become familiar with our resources and

services. While online, go ahead and get registered on the

DePaul.Experience network at depaul.experience.com. This website is

where you can see our calendar and register for Career Center events and

workshops. The advisors also often present at and facilitate our various

workshops and events, so you will likely see your advisor at a session!

DePaul.Experience is also where all job and internship opportunities

presented to DePaul University from outside employers are posted.

Write down anything that you find beneficial or have questions about on

these websites and bring it up in your discussion with your advisor.

Finally, work to develop a relationship with your advisor. Stay in contact

and be sure to follow up with your advisor with an email or additional

appointment. Use your interaction with your career advisor as a small

opportunity to practice interacting in a professional manner. With somuch professional networking done online these days, its important to

build and practice your networking skills. As you need, reach out to

discuss your development and goals. Also, remember to ask for referrals

to other resources both within the Career Center and throughout DePaul

University. Your advisor can point you in the right direction!

We look forward to talking with you and helping you reach your goals

and make connections. Please contact us at either the location to set up

ASK the Experts:3 Tips for Graduating Seniors

With graduation just around the corner, Alumni SharingKnowledge (ASK) mentors share their insight for soon-to-beDePaul alumni. Interested in hearing more advice? Visitask.depaul.edu to learn how you can connect with an ASK mentorin your field.

Michelle Auk, Associate, Leasing Portfolio,J.P. Morgan Capital Corporation

    1. Keep in touch with the professors youve established a rapportwith in school. And when you do, dont just go to them whenyou need something like a recommendation letter or careeradvice.

    2. Join an alumni association - for example, all Finance majorsshould consider joining DePaul CFO (Circle of FinanceOpportunities).

    3. Give back to the DePaul community. Donate when you can, whether it be monetary or in volunteer hours.

    Anthony Williams, President/Chief Consultant,Connection, LLC

    1. Don't raise the bar without setting a standard.Often times we set goals beyond our reach. Then when we fail,we consider ourselves unworthy, unprepared and not focused.Realize that life happens and circumstances will arise. Set goalsfor where you are now, make baby-steps toward them but allowroom for change.

    2. Develop Centers of InfluenceAsk Yourself: Where am I now in relation to where I want to be?Is everything in life you're connected to meaningful? (your job?personal relationships? friendships? mentors?)

Developing "centers of influence" is imperative. This is

surrounding yourself with people that have exceeded where youwant to be and allowing them the opportunity to mentor you sothat you supersede them. In doing this take the time to re-evaluatethe things you've chosen to embrace. If they have no benefit toyour ultimate goal or purpose, re-evaluate the connection.

    3. Test the Waters...The opportunities are endless with plenty of time to discoveryour passion, so don't be afraid to test the waters! Most careersare discovered by trying new things and some even lead toscoring that dream career. There's no rule book that says youHAVE to know exactly what career you want to pursue, so don'tbe afraid to try something new! You never know where it couldlead.

Vicki Klopsch, Director of Career Planning &Resources, Scripps College

    1. Introduce yourself to at least 1 person at every event you attend, professional or social.

    2. Send a thank you card, email, or note to a new contact. It's afriendly and easy way to stay connected, and an excellent habit forthe job search process.

    3. Whatever you do, put your heart into it.
