Time Required: 45-‐50 minutes
Objective: • Students will obtain knowledge on the different career clusters.
• Students will learn how to identify and interpret career responsibilities.
• Students will learn methods of classifying occupations.
Content Standards: AA.S.4 Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work
in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.
Indicators: AA.C.5.4.06 Compare and contrast different career options. AA.C.5.4.03 Develop an awareness of personal abilities, skills,
interests and motivations.
GOAL: Students will learn the relationship between personal interest and career exploration as they compare and contrast career options. Materials:
1. “How Santa Got His Job” By Stephen Krensky Book 2. Career Clusters Handout (Handout 1)
Procedures and Discussion:
1. You may begin by asking students how many of them have already thought about what they want to do when they are old enough to work. You might ask why they are considering that career. Explain that they may think about many different jobs before they graduate from high school. Discuss the importance of eventually choosing a career that fits their personalities and interests. Explain how everybody encounters this process even Santa did.
2. Distribute Handout 1 -‐ “Career Clusters”. Introduce concept of career clusters. Discuss how career clusters provide a way for schools to organize student instruction and experiences around sixteen categories that encompass virtually all occupations.

Furthermore, how it helps teachers, counselors, and other school officials help them to discover what they want to do when they grow up.
3. Introduce each career cluster briefly. 4. Review story “How Santa Got His Job”. After each job Santa obtains, ask students which
career cluster would that particular job fall under. 5. After reviewing the book completely, discuss how some careers have similar goals and
how past experiences, jobs, can lead to the ideal career for an individual, just like it did for Santa. Also, identify responsibility of common careers in the career clusters discussed and relate these to current responsibility as a student. Inquiry relations from students.
