Students must apply to be admitted into an academy. Who can apply for admission to an academy?Incoming 9th grade students may apply to any one of the district academies. Academies may admit 10th grade students or students who are new to NISD with facilitator approval.

What if I want to attend an academy that is not offered at my home campus?You will have the opportunity to transfer to the campus of the academy for which you were accepted to participate in an academy. This will become your home campus.

Will the district provide transportation if I want to transfer in order to participate in an academy?Yes, bus transportation will be provided both to and from school at regular school hours. Transportation will not be provided for out of district transfer students.

Agricultural Mechanics and Metal TechnologiesStudents will prepare for careers in agricultural power, structural, and technical systems. This course is designed to develop an understanding of agricultural mechanics as it relates to safety and skills in tool operation, carpentry, welding, and metal working through collaboration, innovation, and self-direction.

Principles of Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and CommunicationsThe course includes an introduction to audio and video production, graphic design and illustration, and principals of animation. Adobe Creative Cloud Applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator. Premiere, and Flash will be used in the course.

Child DevelopmentThis course is a technical laboratory course that addresses knowledge and skills related to child growth and development from prenatal through school-age children. Students participate in a Reality Works Baby Simulator Project, prepare nutritious kid-friendly snacks, as well as investigate careers related to the care and education of children.

Instructional Practices (Internship)This course is a field-based internship in which students work under the joint direction of their course instructor and a mentor teacher on an NISD Elementary, Middle or High School campus. Students learn to plan and direct instruction, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping, and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals, and other educational personnel.

Practicum in Education and TrainingThis course is an advanced field-based internship in which students work under the joint direction of their course instructor and a mentor teacher on an NISD Elementary, Middle or High School campus. PLTW Principles of Biomedical SciencesIn the introductory course of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the

death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

PLTW Human Body SystemsStudents examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Exploring science in action, students build organs

and tissues on a skeletal Maniken®; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases.

PLTW Medical InterventionsStudents follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in

human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through real-world cases, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

PLTW Biomedical InnovationsIn the final course of the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science sequence, students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design innovative solutions for the

most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. Students address topics ranging from public health and biomedical engineering to clinical medicine and physiology. They have the opportunity to work on an independent design project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution.

Principles of Human ServicesThis course is a laboratory course that will enable students to investigate careers in the Human Services Career Cluster, including counseling and mental health, early childhood development, family and community, personal care, and consumer services.

Family and Community ServicesThis course is a laboratory-based course designed to involve students in realistic and meaningful community-based activities through direct service or service-learning experiences. Emphasis is placed on developing and enhancing organizational and leadership skills and characteristics.

Counseling and Mental HealthIn this course, students model the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a counseling and mental health career through simulated environments. Students are expected to apply knowledge of ethical and legal responsibilities, limitations, and the implications of their actions.

Practicum in Human ServicesThis course provides occupation- specific training that focuses on the development of consumer services, early childhood development, counseling and mental health services, and family and community-services careers.

Child DevelopmentThis course is in Education, Early Childhood and Counseling Mental Health programs. This course is a technical laboratory course that addresses knowledge and skills related to child growth and development from prenatal through school-age children. Students participate in a Reality Works Baby Simulator Project, obtain CPR and First Aid Certification, prepare nutritious kid-friendly snacks, as well as investigate careers related to the care and education of children.

Family and Community ServicesThis course is a laboratory-based course designed to involve students in realistic and meaningful community-based activities through direct service or service-learning experiences. Emphasis is placed on developing and enhancing organizational and leadership skills and characteristics.

Child Guidance (Internship)This course is an internship course that focuses on the development and guidance of preschool, toddler and infant age groups. Students use skills to promote the well-being and healthy development of children, strengthen a culturally diverse society, and pursue careers related to the care, guidance, and education of children, including those with special needs.

PreAP Computer Science IThis course will foster students’ creativity and innovation by presenting opportunities to design, implement, and present meaningful programs through a variety of media. Students will collaborate with one another, their instructor, and various electronic communities to solve problems.

AP Computer Science AThis course includes the study of advanced programming techniques, file management, data structures and an introduction to Object-Oriented Programming. Java is the language used for completing program assignments. The district expectation is that the student will take the appropriate AP exam.

Mobile Application DevelopmentStudents will gain an understanding of the principles of mobile application development through the study of development platforms, programming languages and software design standards.

Project-Based ResearchThis course is a course for students to research and solve a real-world problem. Students are matched with a mentor from the business or professional community to develop an original project on a topic related to career interests. Students use scientific methods of investigation to conduct in-depth research, compile findings, and present their findings to an audience that includes experts in the field.
