A Note From the Director

Hello, everyone!

It seems that Spring has finally come! I hope that all of you, like the children in our Homework Club, took some time recently to reflect on the resurrection of our Savior and the joy that He brings! We truly enjoy finding new ways to share this with those we serve each year.

Since our last newsletter, community meetings were held regarding our walking trail and using volunteers to increase our hours of access for the playground, a new student joined our Homework Club, we began the process of preparing the ground & building a fence for a garden, and we planted our Pinwheel Garden for Child Abuse Prevention month (April), along with many other activities.

Work has begun on the walking trail! I am so excited to see this begin to come together! We have also developed a survey on various side projects for the trail, hoping to make it as fun to use as possible. Please contact us if you would like to complete the survey. Our prayer for this trail is that it will bring more people to The John 3:16 Center, provide us with an opportunity to have informal conversations with parents & families, develop relationships and identify needs. In addition, be on the lookout for environmental education opportunities—the first on the horizon is an opportunity for teens to participate in learning how to lead activities that teach children about their environment (May 10th & 17th, 11am-2pm). Anyone interested must register in advance.

With spring comes our two May fundraisers...golf tournament & yard sale! It is not too late to sign up a team or be a sponsor of some type (donate a door prize or items for golfer goodie bags, sponsor a hole, be a prize sponsor, etc ) for our annual golf tournament, to be held on May 9th at Chockoyotte Country Club. Details are in the newsletter and on the website! Your participation provides funds for our programs serving children & their families. As you begin spring cleaning, consider donating items you no longer use for our upcoming yard sale at Lakeside Lutheran on May 24th.

We are also finalizing plans for our free summer day camp. Once again, we have both educational and Biblical themes for each week of camp. In response to many requests, we are also returning to identifying different weeks for groups of grade levels (1st-3rd & 4th-7th). We will take up to 2 students in grade levels above 7th to be student assistants each week. Registration has begun—if you know of anyone looking for summer activities for their children/grandchildren, send them our way! Children look forward to returning each year and we enjoy developing games, crafts, devotions, and educational enrichment opportunities for them! Please keep us in prayer as we continue to serve and as our strategic planning committee begins to meet. Pray that God will give us wisdom and discernment as we plan for the future direction of C.A.R.E./The John 3:16 Center and the programs through which we work. Thank you all for your continued support, in its various forms; God uses you to accomplish great things in our community! May He bless you as you continue to serve Him!

MAKING THE COMMUNITY CONNECTION…….

CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH

April 2014– Staff along with the children that attend the activities at the center came together on a beautiful spring day to place blue pinwheels on the

front grounds in solidarity of the cause to raise awareness about child abuse. For more information visit www.preventchildabusenc.org

Something more is growing at John 3:16

Student and John 3:16 center volunteer, Kirklin Gandy along with the help of executive director, Shannon McAllister applied for a grant from KIPP’s Youth of Extraordinary Spirits, funded by the Halifax County fund at the NC Community Foundation. They were awarded $175 to cover the cost of fencing materials. Longtime volunteer Philip Sarpong tilled the area and Kirklin recruited his dad and friend, Josh Gilbert to help him install the post and wire fencing to surround the envisioned garden that will be maintained by Homework Club students. The children will begin planting this week with

assistance and guidance from volunteers, Susan Cron and Josephine Laster. Look forward to update on the harvest in the fall!

Walking Trail Update: Community input and follow up meetings have been conducted to inform and gather ideas about

the proposed 1/4 mile walking trail being installed on the grounds of the center. Help is still needed to get the word out about the trail

and the need for more volunteers to be on site to extend the hours open to access the playground and trail. If you are willing to

volunteer (it’s a great way to workout at the same time) please contact Shannon or Brittany at 586-1800 or [email protected]

GED Spring Semester 2014 has been slow with only 4 classes remaining . There are three students enrolled and

have had inquiries from six others . The 2014 GED program has changed in the way the material is presented. The

reading and writing test were combined into one test with one sitting of over two hours. The science and social

studies tests both have a twenty five minute extended response question. The mathematics test has some new and

different ways of looking at math with more emphasis on Algebra. Depending on when the student was last in

school will make a difference toward recalling these skills or having to learn a new skill before even starting on the

GED portion of the four tests. The new tests are geared to the common core of standards. Many of the brief items

featured in both discrete items and scenarios will be drawn from texts reflecting "The Great American

Conversation”. A GED test-taker must remain competitive with students who complete their high school

credentials in the “traditional manner”. The 2014 test is tied to career and college readiness content. Summer

courses will not be offered this year. Classes will resume in the fall.
