The degree is research-led and has attracted students of the highest quality, including secular and ecclesiastical judges, university academics, barristers, solicitors and clergy from both the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. Structure: • You study four modules over two years • Each module is taught over two residential weekends • The residential weekends are usually held in September, November, March and June of each year Assessment: • A distinctive feature of this degree is that there are usually no written examinations • You complete four 5,000 word essays and a 15,000 word dissertation Teaching: • The degree is research led with emphasis given to the practical effect of canon law • The course is directed by Professor Norman Doe. The teaching is delivered by Professor Doe, other members of staff at Cardiff Law School and the Fellows and Associates of Cardiff’s prestigious Centre for Law and Religion • Cardiff is ranked the 7th best Law School in the UK for the quality of its research in the latest official Research Assessment Exercise. It is also at the forefront of research in this field, being home to the Centre for Law and Religion, the Interfaith Legal Advisers Network, the Colloquium of Anglican and Roman Catholic Canon Lawyers and the Law and Religion Scholars Network The first degree course of its type in the United Kingdom, the LLM (Canon Law) provides an opportunity for postgraduate study in the canon law of the churches of the Worldwide Anglican Communion, particularly that of the Church of England, and the Roman Catholic Church and the law of the State applicable to these churches.

Canon Law Modules Available

In Part 1 of the degree of LLM (Canon Law), students are required to study modules to the value of 120 credits, all of which must be drawn from modules listed below. All of the canon law modules carry 30 credits. These are taught at eight residential weekends, and are assessed by four pieces of written coursework (one after every two weekends).

Year 1:- Conceptual Foundations and Historical Development of Canon Law (Weekends 1 and 2)- Government and Ministry in Canon Law (Weekends 3 and 4)

Year 2:- Doctrine, Liturgy and Rites in Canon Law (Weekends 5 and 6)- The Interface of Canon Law and Civil Law (Weekends 7 and 8)

In Part 2, students complete and submit of a Dissertation of not more than 15,000 words.
