Grading Key & Policies Grading Key:

CR = Credit = 100%O = Outstanding = !00%S = Satisfactory = 85%NI = Needs Improvement = 70%MI = Missing assignment = 0%AB = Absent = 0% until work is handed in

Homework will graded with a CR, O, S, or NI and recorded in the grade book. If a student earned less than a 70%, students may correct the assignment for a grade up

to a 70%. Tests and quizzes are graded with a percentage grade and will have greater weighting

than homework or class work. Late assignments (L), more than one day late, will be given a maximum grade of 70%. If a student is absent (AB), their assignment will be considered missing (MI) until the

assignment is turned in. If you would like to pick up your child’s work the day of their absence, please call or email me in the morning in order to give me ample time to gather your child’s work. Their work can be sent home with a sibling or friend or it can be picked up at the office. A “We Missed You” sheet will be filled out on the day(s) of your child’s absence which notes all the assignments he/she missed for the day. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to find out what they missed for the day. They too can contact me via email or phone or contact a fellow student. They will be given reasonable time to make up missing work before it is considered late. Usually, this is up to one week after returning to school.

Grading policies (continued)

Incomplete work (I) will be given a grade of 50%. Incomplete work is either homework or class work that has not be completed or has been completed unsatisfactory. Students are expected to complete the work and earn a maximum grade of 70%.

Missing work (MI) will be given a grade of 0%. When the work is turned in, it will be given a maximum grade of 70%.

Progress reports will be generated approximately 2 times per quarter. Missing work (MI) recorded on the progress report must be turned in

within one week or the score will remain a 0%. Copies of missing work may or may not be given depending on

individual circumstances. The exception of copies being given will be due to absences.

Additional copies will not be given for work that had been turned in, but needed to be corrected due to a low grade.

Students who continually do not complete their homework will be expected to give up their recess to complete their work.

Honor Roll Criteria Attain an average of 87% or above of 6 academic subject

areas. 87%-93% is honor roll; 94%-100% is high honor roll.

A student earning a D or F (achievement grade) will not be eligible for honor roll consideration in that marking period.

Related Arts grades in art, library, PE & music are also considered.

Presidential Academic Award of Excellence: The United States Department of Education will give the

Presidential Academic Award of Excellence to all fifth grade students who attain a grade point average of 3.5 in all four terms in grade 4 and the first 2 marking periods in grade 5. Students must also achieve a score of 4 on the NYS ELA or NYS Math Grade 4 test.

MAP (Measure of Academic Progress)

MAP is a computer based testing progam, built on 30 years of research and refinement, and adapts to the child in real-time as the test progresses for a pinpoint picture of learning achievement and readiness.

It provides detailed information about your child as a student to help differentiated, focused instruction and increase achievement.

CARder Kids Accelerated Reader - AR

Students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be participating in a program called Accelerated Reader. This program now encompasses over 100,000 titles! AR includes quality books in a variety of genres and improves reading comprehension.

Students will enjoy both reading their books and working with the computer. Books may be accessed through the classroom library, the school library, and the community library or, if desired, purchased from a local bookstore.

After reading a book, the student will take a comprehensive test on the computer. A passing score will entitle the student to earn points. These points will be based on the results of the test and the difficulty of the book. Quizzes cannot be retaken nor can quizzes be accessed from home. The program will track each student’s accumulated points, number of books read, titles of books completed, and the score of each test. Students will periodically receive a printout of this information to take home. In addition, students will be given a User ID and password which will allow parents to access their child’s Accelerated Reader information at home.

Goals for January and June have been established for each grade level. Celebrations for goals reached will be in January, after the second marking period and in June, before the end of school.

5th grade AR goal is 30 points (or less based on individual needs) per semester Sept. – Jan. & Feb. – June. If a student does not reach their goal, they will earn a “F” which will be equivalent to 2 test grades per marking period. For example, if your child’s goal is 30 points for the semester, they should earn 15 points by the end of the first marking period and 30 points by the end of the second marking period.

HomeworkPlan on approximately 40-50 minutes of homework Monday-Friday. Please take into consideration your own child’s work habits and environment. A TV or lots of noise and distractions may affect this.Weekend homework may be to pre-read the leveled reader for the upcoming week or work on a project.Students have a 15-20 minute study hall at the end of each day to complete homework. Time is also usually given in each subject area to start or even complete assignments. If you are noticing that most homework assignments are coming home blank, this is a sign that your student may not be using school time effectively. If your child participates in Job Core then he/she will not have a study hall.

Home Filing System I encourage that each student have a home filing

system to place all their graded class work, homework, quizzes, and test.

Some suggestions are: an expandable file folder, individual folders for each subject, a file box or any other creative filing system you can think of.

Students should file their work for each term (also known as quarter, or marking period). There are 4 terms per year. So, after each term, you can discard your papers and start fresh for the new term.

This filing system will be helpful to you in 5th grade as well as middle school and high school.

Why should you have a file system? Well, if an incorrect grade is posted on your progress report or report card, you will have proof of the grade you earned.

Cursive WritingElementary C-PP Handwriting GuidelinesDistrict Expectations

Established 2010-2011 The established style of handwriting/manuscript is Block. The established style of handwriting/cursive is Modern Cursive Zaner-Bloser Handwriting materials will be used for instruction. The goal is for students to be able to read and write legibly in

manuscript and cursive handwriting. Students who have not mastered the skill will be provided

interventions and access to materials to support their development of this skill.

Student handwriting will be assessed using the district handwriting evaluation tool on authentic student writing sample at least 3 times/year.

Handwriting will be embedded into instructional practices throughout the curriculum.

BRAVOIn an effort to teach, develop, and promote organizational strategies as they relate to student learning, students in Mrs. Summa’s 5th grade class will participate in a daily organizational program known as BRAVO. Your student’s BRAVO card will be located on the back cover of their take home folder for you to view daily.

elieve in yourself

espect your time

chieve to succeed

alue your education

rganization is key

BRAVO Believe in yourself, Respect your time, Achieve to succeed,

Value your education, Organization is key Students will earn BRAVO weekly by fulfilling the

following daily tasks: All assignments written in their agenda daily. All homework completed and handed in on time. Agenda does not have to be signed daily by

parent/guardian after he/she has reviewed their child’s homework; however, if homework is continually not completed or is continually handed in late, then parents will be asked to sign agenda each evening.

Desk neat and organized. All materials ready for the day (books, pencils, etc.)

BRAVO Believe in yourself, Respect your time, Achieve to succeed,

Value your education, Organization is key Students earn one letter per day based on the above criteria

toward the word BRAVO; for example Monday – B, Tuesday – R, Wednesday – A, Thursday – V, Friday – O.

If students earn all 5 letters of BRAVO for the week they will earn an Oops slip that can be used for one subject if he/she forgets his/her homework. One Oops slips per day can be used; however, the missing homework is expected to be completed & handed in by the next day.

If students earn all 5 letters of BRAVO for the week they will earn a raffle ticket to be entered in a monthly drawing.

In addition to being important skills for success in school, the organizational skills being practiced daily are crucial for success in the work place as adults. The agenda is a great tool for daily home/school communication where parents have the opportunity to discuss skills and concepts learned during the school day. By checking the agenda daily, parents will be kept informed of daily learning, homework responsibilities, and upcoming test or quizzes and events.

BRAVO Yearly Criteria September through December: Students must earn the BRAVO letters 4 out of

5 days and 3 out of 4 weeks January through June: Students must earn the BRAVO letters 5 out of

5 days and 4 out of 4 weeks. Students will be given one FREE day each month.

Students may or may not use their oops slips throughout the year, but they are encouraged to save their oops slips for an end of the year raffle drawing. The more oops slips you have the better your chances are for winning a prize!

BRAVO Daily Behavior Students’ behavior will be assessed daily. If

there is a star on a specific day, then the student has done a fantastic job of following the Carder Character Code. If there is a tally mark(s) on a specific day(s), then the student did not follow the Carder Character Code. Parents are asked to initial the day their child has a tally mark(s) and discuss.

*See slide 2 for Carder Character Code. *

Birthdays STUDENT WELLNESS Policy 5405 It is our responsibility at Carder Elementary School to uphold the expectations

within this policy in order to promote student wellness. Every effort is made to ensure the nutritional quality of the food and beverages

available at school meet these guidelines. Therefore, a change this year relative to classroom celebrations is necessary. The policy indicates we must limit classroom celebrations with food during the school day to once per month.

Children will still be recognized on their birthdays at Carder School (reading name on the announcement, wearing their birthday hat, receiving a birthday pencil from the principal, and in-class recognitions), however, the difference will be in the treats brought in from home in order to abide by this district’s wellness policy. We are asking that you do not send treats to school with your child so that we can follow the district policy.

Classroom teachers will communicate with families how other typical school holiday celebrations that involve food will be coordinated for their classroom.

We ask all families to coordinate directly with the classroom teacher prior to sending any treat in to school. Together we will work to promote wellness in our children.

As we have many different cultures and traditions, I encourage families to let me know of special days in their culture. Usually a time can be arranged for the celebration to be a part of our classroom learning.

If you have any questions, please contact me or the school principal, Mr. Davis.

Closing Thoughts

I am looking forward to a fantastic year with you and your child.
