UM Interactive Media Program Website RedesignDirective & Cautious Card Sort Report

CIM 622: UX Research Methods 2/15/16

IntroductionThis is a digital open card sort study completed to inform the

navigational design for UM’s Interactive Media Website.

The card sorts were directive and cautious, allowing participants to take their time to carefully consider and group the 60 items given to them.

The card sorts were conducted to examine how people would group items currently on the Interactive Media website of University of Miami.

MethodsFollowing are the methods used during the course of the study.

MethodsWe conducted open card sorts with 16 participants, 8 males and 8

females.

The card sorts were directive and cautious

We conducted the card sorts in person using a digital program called xSort

The participants completed the card sorts on a Mac laptop provided by the moderator

While the card sort was in progress the moderator took notes with pen and paper

After all of the card sorts were completed the data was analysed to provide recommendations informing upon the design of the UM Interactive Media website

Methods: Equipment

UM Interactive Media Website: used as a resource for card items

Xsort: a software used to conduct card sorts and collect data

Excel: used to combine data and calculate outcomes

Google Docs and Sheets: used to compile information

Google Slides and PPT: used to create report

Notebook and Pen: used to write notes during card sort

Phones: used to take pictures

Researcher Toolkit Document: a reference we created to assist with card sorts

Demographic Survey: created to discover basic information about participants

Physical tools:Digital tools:

Methods: Procedure2/8-2/10

●Generated a list of 60 items based off the UM Interactive Media Website

●Created a demographic survey to collect information about our participants

●Wrote a researcher toolkit to assist us during the data collection process

●Downloaded and tested Xsort, the program we used to conduct our card sorts

Methods: Procedure2/10-2/12

● Conducted directive and cautious open card sorts with 16 participants

○ Before beginning the card sorting exercise, we asked participants to complete a demographic survey○ After the survey was completed we gave participants these instructions:

■ We appreciate your help in identifying the categories of information that should be on the University of Miami Interactive Media Website home page or second-level pages, and what those categories should be called. We want to see what groupings of cards make sense to you. Once you have grouped the cards, you will name each of the groups. Take your time and carefully consider the items to be sorted.

■ If you have questions during any point of the exercise, please do not hesitate to ask and I will do my best to answer your questions. During the exercise, I ask you to “think out loud”, so as to better glean an understanding of your thought process. Do you have any questions before we begin?“

○ After starting the session, we took note of the participant’s thinking process, card groupings and any questions or comments that surfaced during the exercise.

Methods: Procedure2/12-2/14

●Compiled data into one Xsort file

●Analysed data to discover how the navigation of the UM Interactive Media website can be improved

○ Used Xsort program to generate distance matrixes and tree diagram

●Used our data to inform redesign recommendations

●Compiled all of our data into a report

Recommendations -Homepage

1. Highlight the focus area of the program: UI Design, Data Visualization and Game Design2. To Increase potential target audience’s attractiveness, add content: Student Project, Student

Awards & Faculty Awards3. Current students and faculty might have potential interest in participating in recent events,

add: Events Calendar4. For visitors to visit our school: Location Map

Tree diagram shows close relations among these items:

Redesign -Homepage

Recommendations -Admissions

1. The key content should be the Application Process Information2. International Student application information is necessary because of additional requirements3. Convenient for potential target audience to search information about the program and

admission

Redesign -Admissions

Recommendations -Academics

1. The current “Minor Curriculum page”, “Programming Core Classes” and “Core Classes” makes Participants feel confused. In the “M.F.A. Curriculum” page, the difference between “Core classes” and “Required classes” overlaps.

2. To make these items more clear, it is better to simplify and clarify.

Tree diagram shows close relations among these items:

Redesign -Academics

Recommendations -Tuition & Aid1. Currently “Tuition & Fees” is under the

“Admissions” page, it’s easy to miss and tree diagram shows participants didn’t put this item under the “Admissions” group.

2. Distance matrix between Item “Tuition” and Item “Graduate Admission” is around 0.7.

3. Assistantship is a kind of financial aid.

Redesign -Tuition & Aid

Recommendations -About Us1. Facilities should also include international building.2. It would be better to categorize equipments into certain courses. Like physical computing, game design, console

game, etc.

Tree diagram shows close relations among these items:

Redesign -About Us

Recommendations -Job & internships, Community

1. Participants tend to put jobs, internships and office for services in a group. What’s more, they tend to put partnerships, donors and opportunities for Alumni in a group.

2. According to importance rank, around 7 people put items like donors, partnership opportunities as unimportant.

Tree diagram shows close relations among these items:

0.0 0.2 0.4 0.6

Redesign -Jobs & Internships, Community

Recommendations -Footer

1. Since in the unclassified cards groups, the top three are Queso(6), Github(4), Slack(4), it’s unnecessary to put these internal tools into the “Resource” group. They make people who are not familiar with these tools feel confused.

2. Instead of using “Resource”, it is better to use “Social Media” for Twitter and LinkedIn.

Researcher PacketPrompt given to participants (after filling out the questionnaire):

“Thank you for your willingness to participate in this study.

We appreciate your help in identifying the categories of information that should be on the University of Miami Interactive Media Website home page or second-level pages, and what those categories should be called. We want to see what groupings of cards make sense to you. Once you have grouped the cards, you will name each of the groups. Take your time and carefully consider the items to be sorted.

If you have questions during any point of the exercise, please do not hesitate to ask and I will do my best to answer your questions. During the exercise, I ask you to “think out loud”, so as to better glean an understanding of your thought process. Do you have any questions before we begin?“

Moderators were asked to document the following during their card sorting sessions:

Total time of test:

Relevant observations relating to the time taken by participant.

Take note of the participant’s thinking process: ● Are they confident in their choices?● Do they appear confused?● Do they ask questions? What questions?● Do they seem comfortable with the interface?

○ Pay attention to whether the participant is comfortable, if they seem uncomfortable, let them take a break, get some water etc.

Take note of the card groupings:● Are there any items left unclassified? If so, what is the reasoning behind this?

● How many groups are there by the end?Take note of usable quotes (questions and comments that surfaced during the exercise).

Additional notes (body language, tone, preferred terminology, etc.)

Document the process when appropriate (pictures).

At the end of the session, thank the participant for participating in the study. “Thank you for your patience and time to participate in our study today. We appreciate your help.”

ObservationsInternational students took longer to sort the cards, the average card sort taking 70 minutes

Teachers from UM took less time to sort the cards, the average card sort taking 30 minutes.

When participants first started the card sort they immediately looked for items that shared commonalities. For example, they looked for items starting with “MFA” or ending with “Deadline”, “Submission” and “Application”.

International students might have trouble understanding the meaning of some items. P1 and P4 felt confused when they did not know the meaning of words. For example, P3 didn’t know what “Eye tracking” was and P4 did not know what an assistantship is.

ObservationsItems related to the application process were generally grouped together.

Most participants had few problems using Xsort.

What Is Queso? was a question that was often asked during card sorts.

Participants were unsure of what to do with the Frances Wolfson Building

Many participants were also unsure what Github is. Because of this it was often left as unclassified.

Participant Comments“I Don’t Know What Canelink is”

“What the heck, Queso is cheese”

“Slack does not go anywhere to me”

“International student transcripts should go with the english proficiency exams”

“Queso? Is that just a word”

“What is the Wolfson Building? I don’t think most people would know what that is”

“The first thing I would want to look at is how to get in like application submission, application fees and MFA application process”

“There are so many things related to international students I am going to make an international category”

“To me it makes sense that all of the MFA things would go together”

I am going to add student projects to accomplishments because they are probably things being worked on now”

“I chose to put put everything you would need in the application process into an application process group”

” What does cables & connectors mean? Is for students or faculties to check out these items or is the equipment for course and

research? If they are equipment, there should be a category for physical computing equipment.”

Participant Comments“Why there are items about smartphones and cable connectors? It’s so weird? Something like U print? Need to be download?”

“Why they have Wolfsen Building, UX Lab but they don’t add International Building?”

“What’s student project? Is it a display of students’ projects or is it a class assignment?”

“What’s Queso?”

“What’s Eye contracting equipment? A camera or a Eagle eye”

“Why this website don’t have links to other departments? Like PR, Communication and Motion pictures?”

“What’s Opportunities for Alumni?”

“What is social impact design? Is it a class?”

“What is student project? I don’t know how to categorize this item. Is a student works display or topics of your major?”

“What’s difference between Programing core classes and core classes?”

“It’s so weird. Why there is a event calendar here?”

“Jobs” don’t have anything to do with students.”
