CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

13

Capespan Farms grows and sells its products according to the highest quality and ethical standards. We are committed to the health, safety, and fair treatment of all our employees. Capespan Farms strives to continuously improve on the well-being of our people and the environment where we operate. We are defined by the quality of our products in the market. We care for the people who nurture and produce these products – our employees.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Key environmental resource indicators are monitored across all the farms to ensure that our activities have minimal impact on the environment. Through supporting programmes such as GlobalGAP and ongoing accreditation audits in accordance with industry regulations, we ensure that Capespan Farms remains a leader in environmental friendly farming techniques.

ENERGY AND AIR

Infrastructure is designed to utilise o-peak periods, and new equipment has been installed to manage variable demand and produce less waste.

WATER

Soil probe technology ensures irrigation does not go beyond the necessary saturation, thereby avoiding run-o waste. These probes also enable the scientific scheduling of irrigation according to our plants’ needs. Spray equipment is carefully calibrated to ensure minimum prescribed application per square metre of orchard or vineyard.

SOIL

Soil samples are analysed in a laboratory to ensure optimal application of macro and micro nutrition elements. We do not use chemicals that could damage soil and bacteria is prohibited.

14

LAND USE AND BUILD ENVIRONMENT

Infrastructure is only built once a stringent Environmental Impact Study has been conducted. Best practices, like proper drainage and cover crop management, are applied to avoid soil erosion. Suppliers are vetted based on their approach to sustainability and environmental impact.

COMMUNITY & SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

The Corporate Social Responsibility initiative – Capespan Blue Hand “we care”™ - is a non-profit public benefit organisation, funded solely by Capespan Group. Our sole mandate is to improve the quality of life for people living and working on Capespan’s farms.

In addition, Capespan supports local community projects by endorsing and sponsoring projects that are aligned with this mandate. The vision is to eciently address primary health care, basic-education and life-skills

development needs by means of integrated sustainable initiatives that uplift beneficiaries and their communities.

Social Development projects include the installation of infrastructure, such as improved drinking water filtering systems; and the renovation of existing, as well as construction of additional, worker accommodation and facilities.

PROJECTS

Some Blue Hand “we care” TM initiatives:

Northern CapeBlue Hand “we care” TM initiated an extensive Primary Healthcare Services Programme, in partnership with local stakeholders, in this major table grape production area. Clinics have been renovated or constructed and equipped on each Capespan farm, and professional service providers assist an average of 2 000 farm workers annually.

On-site minor- ailment treatment, as well as primary- and occupational health-care consultations, are conducted at regular intervals during peak fruit production season. During the o-season, personal hygiene, preventative healthcare and related educational services are provided in addition to the above. On-site daycare centres oer a condensed educational programme for pre-school children, providing an age-appropriate nurturing environment while their parents are working on the farm.

Eastern CapeA large percentage of the Valencia township residents in the Eastern Cape work on citrus production farms in the Sundays River Valley area. In partnership with Capespan’s Far East subsidiary Metspan, the Place of Hope and Mercy community project (in Valencia township) has been endorsed and sponsored by Blue Hand.

Two NGOs, Marist and Mercy Care, started the initiative with limited infrastructure, and a single cargo container for shelter. Blue Hand funding allowed the project to expand to a sustainable scale. With the help of local community volunteers, meals are served to more than 300 needy people twice a week. In addition, we built two pre-school classrooms, storage, ablution facilities and a kitchen for the project.

Blue Hand annually provides a Pre-school educational programme to approximately 120 children, monitored by the Sisters of Mercy and Capespan. This education centre provides work to 9 full-time employees as well as a large number of volunteers. The facilities compare with those provided in urban areas and an average of 40 children graduate from Grade R annually.

Blue Hand recently added a skills development and medical consultation facility to this project, consisting of two consultation rooms, a toilet, kitchenette and a training room. This facility is used by a local female craft group to manufacture and sew bags, carpets, pillows and even local school uniforms to provide an income for

single parent mothers. Partner-funders are currently being sourced to expand this skills-development programme and infrastructure to scale.

Similar to the Northern Cape Health Project Blue Hand recently launched a Basic and Occupational Health Care project in the Eastern Cape. This project is managed in partnership with local community stakeholders to benefit the health and wellness of farm workers in the Sundays River Valley.
