She chose Kiera K. as a Kid of CharThis is her first interview and she is very excited. Miss Weeks stated that she shows respect. When kids fall down, helps them get up. Kiera K. is a good listener and follows directions. She likes to show respect every day. Kiera K.this is a special honor. Miss Weeks chose Kiera because she follows the Six Pillars of Character. Interview with Ms. Hays, 4th Grade Teacher
Mark: The Canyon View News Crew heard that you and your 4th grade language arts class went to all three kinderga
classes to teach them about similes and metaphors. How do you think it affected them and why?
Ms. Hays: I know that some of the students felt confident about what they were teaching. One in particular, Kelsey, s
liked it so much she wants to be a teacher when she is older.
Mark: Did this take a lot of planning and time? If so, how many things did they have to learn and what did they have
learn?
Ms. Hays: First, they had to learn about similes, metaphors, and hyperboles. Then, they had to make a quiz, a script
a lesson plan.
Mark: What kind of character trait do you think was shown in the classroom?Ms. Hays: They showed all of the traits: Caring, Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Fairness, Citizenship.
Mark: Did they help them spell words?
Ms. Hays: Yes, they helped each child in the class write one simile. Some classes in the upper grades at Canyon View go to teach younger classes.
Featured below are Shayna, Kelsey, and Luke mentoring students in Ms. Gibsons class.

CV Volunteers are the best! We need you to make Canyon View Elementary Shine. What every parent should know
Researchers have been studying the effects parent attitudes and actions have on their children's academic
success for more than 30 years. The results have been consistent. Anne Henderson and Nancy Berla summedit up in their book A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement, which re-viewed the existing research: "When parents are involved in their children's education at home, they do bet-ter in school. And when parents are involved in school, children go farther in school and the schools they goto are better."
