Before you embark on your journey of research and discovery, I would like to briefly explain the purpose of this database. I have been involved in performances, recordings and research of the Sephardic Song repertory, of which Ladino Songs is the most important part, for over 20 years. I have accumulated a vast library of manuscripts, rare songbooks, romanceros (a collection of romantic Sephardic ballads, poems and songs) and sheet music which I wish to make more available. My goal is to offer all original Ladino Lyrics and my own translations, absolutely free, in one place on the internet. As the number of songs increases we will undoubtedly move the project to its own site. Furthermore, for a modest fee, we will provide as much sheet music and recorded materials (mp3's) for these songs as we have or can find. For now, just click on the alphabetized Titles (below) to go directly to that song's lyrics and translations. Feel free to copy and paste into your own files. Please feel free to send us your comments, suggestions, requests or additional songs we may not know of. Thank you for your interest and may you find what you are looking for! A La Puerta Del Rio

8/20/2019 cancoes em ladino

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/cancoes-em-ladino 6/53

At the river gateshe sits and weepsshe’s got an old husbandthe spicy young girl

At the river’s mouththere's a young girl in the watercombing her hair

and perfuming it with amber

Last night and the night beforeMeroma gave birthto twenty-five miceand a dove

And at the river’s mouththere's a little barrelfull of sardinessoaked in brine

At the river’s mouthonions grow as well asparsley and cilantrofor the cooking pot

Your husband and mineare two of a kind

when they walk down the streetthey are like two lost souls

And at the foot of the mountainlives my mother-in-law,In order not to use up my shoesI’m not going to visit her

A La Una Yo Nací

At one I was born At two I grew up At three I took a lover At four I married

Tell me young lass where do you come from For I wish to know you And if you have no lover I will defend you

Going off to war I blew two kisses into the airOne was for my mother

And the other for you

Corazon ella no te dio Para amar segundo

Adío, adío querida No quero la vida Me l’amargsates tu

Hermosa sos en cantidad Honestedad no tiene Milliones si me vas a dar Mi gente no te queren

Va, buxcate otro amor Aharva otras puertas Aspera otro ardorQue para mi sos muerta

Your mother when she gave you birth And brought you into the worldShe did not give you a heartTo love another

Farewell, farewell my loveI do not want life

You have embittered it for me

You are so beautifulBut you are dishonest

Were you to give me millionsMy family would still not love you

Go look for another loveKnock on other doors Wait for another flame As for me, you are dead

Ah El Novio No Quere Dinero

Ah el novio no quere dinero!Quere a la novia de mazal bueno.Yo vengo a ver!Que gozen y logren y tengan muncho bien!

Ah, el novio no quere ducados!Quere a la novia de mazal alto.

Yo vengo a ver! ... Ah, el novio no quere manillas!Quere a la novia cara de alegría.Yo vengo a ver! ...

Ah, the bridegroom wants no moneyHe wants his bride of good fortune

Ah, the bridegroom wants no ducatsHe wants his bride of great fortuneI come to see ...

Ah, the bridegroom wants no bracelets. He wants his bride and her joyful faceI have come to see ...

Up to Mount SinaiMoses climbed up

Accompanied by JoshuaFor he had always been good to him

The angels were frightenedTo see such a beloved man

And God, with His own hand Writing for him the Holy Law

And God, with His own hand. Wrote for him the Holy Law On tablets of diamonds

And brought them to Moses

Yes, my God we shall make it for YouHoly, holy, we shall build it

We will light the menorah With help from the heavens

On tablets like diamondsHe brought them to Moses

And as he came down from the MountThe tablets broke

As he came down from the MountThe tablets were brokenThe little pieces that remained

Were repaired by Moses

The little pieces that remained Were repaired by Moses

And he joyfullyShowed them to the children

By the resounding fountainI saw a young shepherdessBy the resounding waterI heard a voiceI heard a voice saying

Woe is me, alone am I

When I saw her aloneI declared my love to her

And on her pretty faceI gave her three kissesThen the girl said to me

Another three will make six

Alegrias Y Duelos De La Novia

When in my father's house

I combed my blonde hairNow in my husband’s houseThey are of no use

He has honored me with great wealth

Which his family has given to me

And how good it is for hopeShe who expects to fill her womb

And oh how good is the morning Ay, even better the God which brings it

I want to ask my fatherFor a golden comb made in SevilleTo comb my hair

Which are like fine silk

There in the desert I saw burningI saw the tablets of the Law brought down

And look, this man is our teacher Moses Who went up and came down from the Heavens

The angels of Heaven want to burn himBorn of woman, what does he look for in sanctity?

The angels of Heaven are envious of himHe is but a man, what does he search for in Heaven?

Alta, Alta Va La Luna

Nunca llegue a nacer.

High, high, the moon rises When the dawn arrivesBeautiful, luckless daughter

Never allowed to blossom

I was fifteen years old When I began to make love With a young ne’er-do-well Who eventually left me

I was of noble birth And didn't know how to serveBut when I fell for youThen suffering came

Alta, Alta Va La Luna (2ndVersion)

High, high, the moon rises When the dawn arrivesBeautiful, luckless daughter

Never allowed to blossom

The birds in the skySing beneath the flowering treesThere they sitThose who suffer from love

My round and high mountainsBring me to my belovedInto his arms I will fall

And then I’ll die

My eyes are swollenFrom looking so long at the seaShips are come and goFor me there are no letters

Mother, my motherGive me adviceGive me your advice motherFor I was born without luck

Oh, my daughter, my dear

What advice can I give youIf you were born unluckyThen you shouldn’t have been born

Aman Doctor

I cry throughout the day At night I cannot sleep Asking again and again When will my suffering cease

High goes the moon When it begins to riseBeautiful girl without happinessNever asking to be born

What do you seek young man

At this hour in these partsI come to see my loveFor tomorrow I must leave

I love you with such ardor And such is my painThat better it is to dieThan to lose all hope

When the evening windMurmurs at your window Remember my belovedThe sweet moments of our love

I saw you on the balcony The glance you cast my way Burned in my heart

If I sit on the balcony I don’t do it to look at passersby Thinking of my fateI begin to cry

What will be my destiny I want to understand it now Tell it to me love, and if you wish

I’ll be there to protect you

You cannot protect meFrom the one I loveHe has entered my heart

And I am losing myself

But tell me my love Why you always speak to me like this You must know That I think of you always

Well there’s absolutely no useIn thinking of youI’ve done it in the pastBut always regretted doing so

Such an answerI did not expectI would rather dieThan consent to loving you

Brother Peter was sitting in the sun Wth his white underwear With hands on his rope And alalan and alalan…

The nuns watched him from the corridor: What is this rising from your pants Brother Peter? It is the shotgun which I pack

With bullets for ammunition

Rise up Brother Peter, rise now I cannot, I cannot by God

For so many ladiesI just don’t have enough

Reluctantly he stood up With rose waterThey washed him

And with towels from Holland they dried him

On a scale of gold they weighed himOne hundred-twenty pounds and a quarter

At midnight the charge exploded to impregnate 120 womenMinus the cook which he had forgotten

Thank you Brother Peter, but for me you were in short supply No I wasn’t, I’m bringing it to you now Between the stoves he pushed against her and from his strength

The wall fell like the feather of a chicken

And after nine monthsThey all gave birth to girlsExcept the cook to a boy

And alalan and alalan…

120 cradles all in a corridorLess the cook’sFor they hung her up on the roof The little brother’s rope, what sweet rope

We accepted this most sacred And glorious giftFrom the hand of our God

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good And His mercy endures forever

Blessed be our GodHis name is praiseworthy For You are our Savior

We are at Your command Your sons have been calledFor we do not believe in another god

Great voices and thunderOn the mountain were heardTo see fire and wondrousness

The Jews are confused And Moses with his brothers Asked God for mercy

The Lord of the world spokeCome here Moses my sonFor you have no equal

As it is said And I well know That you believe in no other god

Moses went upTo receive the Torah

Awestruck and nervous Afraid he would fail in his task And not knowing what to do

My mother-in-law, the dark oneTaunts meI cannot live with her anymoreShe is very strong, like deathHow quickly I can see myself without her

One day, sitting with my husband,She was behind me like an enemy,She gave me a pinch, she gave me a big biteHow quickly I can see myself without her

On the sweetest of daysShe sows bitternessMay the devil come and take her away For I can no longer live with her

With my mother-in-law, the dark one

One summer afternoon I passed by the Moorish quarterI saw a Moorish woman washing by a cold fountain

I said to her, Oh lovely Moorish one, I said to her beautiful MoorLet my horses drink from these crystal waters

I am no Moor, knight, as I was born ChristianMoors captured me at Easter time when flowers were in bloom

If you wish to come to Spain, on these horses you’ll come And these clothes, Sir the Knight, with whom shall I leave them?

Those made of silk and wool will be packed inb my suitcases And the useless ones, in the river they’ll go

And with whom shall I leave my honor Sir Knight?I swear on my mother, on my mother
