Now that spring is finally here, it will be full summerand lawn mowing time before you know it. I hope youenjoyed a marvellous spring show season with lots ofnew and old plants. Planning for the fall season is wellunder way and it is not too early to start on the 2013spring season, especially for those January and Februaryshows.

Here are just a few things to think about over thesummer months. Several Ontario orchid societies arehaving summer events to which they invite members ofother orchid societies. This is a further way of makingorchid connections. Particulars for these events areelsewhere in this newsletter.

The Orchid Society of the Royal Botanical Gardens ishosting the 2012 COC Annual General Meeting thisOctober in Burlington, Ontario in conjunction with theirshow at the RBG. The details for this event are also inthis newsletter. These meetings are important forproviding opportunities for face to face contact betweenorchid enthusiasts from across the country. Please ensurethat a delegate from your society plans on attending.

Speaking of future events and event planning, MarleneYoung, a member of the Ottawa Orchid Society, isdeveloping a Facebook site that will include the COCand the Toronto and Montreal Judging Centers. Shewrites:

"Our purpose is to centralize and disseminateinformation concerning the culture, growing, hybridization, conservation, use andappreciation of orchids.

The ORCHID JOURNAL Facebook site willsupport special orchid events and orchid showsacross Canada. We are a central orchidcommunity bulletin board. Society members arealso welcome to contribute to our interactiveforum and to our ongoing conversations aboutorchids."

This can help us all get the word out about orchids andorchid events to the Facebook crowd.

On a personal note I want to take this opportunity toreinforce the importance of keeping records of both yourplants and your other possessions and their locations.About two weeks ago the rear part of our 2.5 hectareproperty got hit by an out of control grass fire from a

neighbouring property. This fire consumed our barnand many trees on our place as well as burning out ofcontrol over many neighbouring properties. Thanks tothe timely intervention of the fire department ourhouse and greenhouse went unscathed and nobody washurt. However, as I used the barn as a general storagespace, I have since had to spend an inordinate amountof my time reconstructing what all burnt up in the fireincluding valuable garden plants. The lesson is if youhave things you value and that you might have toclaim on from an insurance make sure you have up todate records.

The American Orchid Society held its spring meeting ingreen, warm, blue-sky Wichita, Kansas from April 24-28,2012. At this meeting, Californian Sandra Svobodabecame the new President of the AOS, Timothy Brooksand Fred Missbach became Vice Presidents and JeanHollebone of the Ottawa Orchid Society the newsecretary. Sandra is probably well known to most of youas editor of the prestigious Orchid Digest which ispublished four times a year and contains a wealth ofarticles and wonderful photographs of orchids. TimBrooks was the recent chair of the AOS exhibit at thePhiladelphia Flower Show in March which attracted over274,000 visitors through its gates! Mario Ferrusi ofSOOS was re-elected as a trustee for his second two yearterm and has also agreed to chair the GovernanceCommittee of the AOS which supports the Board ofTrustees through the development of appropriate policesand procedures.

The AOS confirmed Terry Kennedy’s appointment asChair of the Toronto Judging Center, January 1, 2012,taking over from Peter Poot who has ably managed thepost for the last several years. Eastern societies, pleasecontact Terry with any questions on show dates andjudging at [email protected]. Terry confirms thatthe Toronto Judging Center is proud to announce thatthe following were approved by the Trustees of theAOS: Gilberto Arrieche, Joyce Medcalf and GailSchwarz are now accredited judges with the AOS andAndre Couture has been elevated to probationary judge.Congratulations to these four judges, their advancementin the AOS judging system represents a lot of personalhard work and study, lots of travel and are well deservedachievements. We as societies also benefit from theiradvancement, as each of these individuals has beengenerous in sharing their knowledge by givingpresentations to societies, as well as taking a very activerole in judging at our various orchid shows and showtables. Without the AOS judging system, we would nothave judged, ribboned shows, so we all benefit fromtheir hard work. We also officially have two newstudents: Carol Butcher from Rochester and ChristelleKapfer from Montreal. Congratulations to all!!

The fall meeting of the AOS will be held in Portland,Oregon, November 14-18, 2012. Hopefully, some ofthe western societies will take advantage of the closenessof the American meeting and participate as an AOSmeeting is an interesting combination of AOS board andcommittee meetings, seminars and show.

The AOS has now completed its move to FairchildBotanic Garden but because construction on the neweducation centre there has been delayed, the AOS isworking in small, temporary quarters and it is estimatedthis may continue till early summer. While there wassome delay in the mailing of Orchids Magazine in Marchand April, the publication schedule is back on track andthe May edition is expected to be mailed at the usualtime. As well, there was a temporary slow down inprocessing awards and memberships but these have toobeen addressed and are back on schedule. It has been ahuge effort by Chief Operating Officer Ron McHattonto keep everything going during the physical move withstaff working at home and the issues of reconnectingcomputers, servers etc. Thanks to him the move wassuccessful and disruption to services minimal.

A few highlights of the meeting: financially the AOS is inthe black and moving forward with a focus on attractingnew memberships and retention of existing membersthrough increased programming and exciting newservices for members. A revised AQ+ is ready for Btesting in the next few weeks. A new publication, OrchidCare, debuted in March which focuses on culturalinformation for beginner and intermediate-experiencegrowers. The Board of Trustees approved grants to theresearch committee and established a new conservationfund to support conservation and protection of habitatprograms. The judging program announced an increasein awards since 2010! The Education Committee isfinishing up a module on orchids for children which willbe made available for societies to use at their orchidshows. And finally, although we have listed only a fewthings the AOS is doing, we hope this gives you aflavour of the excitement and spirit of renewal that ispervading the AOS. Do visit the AOS web site athttp://www.aos.org/ for reliable content information onorchids, and do seriously consider joining the AOS ifyou have not already done so. There are lots of benefits!

Some 300 AOS Awards of Quality are recorded, aboutone-third for Phalaenopsis. Only a very few AQ/AOShave been awarded to Canadian hybridizers includingHoward Ginsberg in 2007 for Phal. Bedford BlushingBeauty, and Mario Ferrusi for his hybrid MasdevalliaMalcolm Adams in 2008. It is a great honour to boththe person who selects the parents to improve a speciesor to make a hybrid and succeeds. It is similarly a greatachievement for the grower who raises a large group ofseedlings to flowering size. To obtain the AOS AQrequirement of a minimum of 12 plants blooming at thesame time for judging as a group, the grower must beskillful and patient. We can be justly proud to add MichelTremblay to a select group of Canadian orchid growerswho have received a coveted AQ from the AOS, andrecognize the effort of Howard Ginsberg who remadethe hybrid, Phal. Lowland Juwel, that Michel then raisedfrom flask.

Michel Tremblay is an accredited judge of the MontréalAOS Judging Center who specializes in Phalaenopsis. In2007, he acquired two flasks of Phal. Lowland Juwelfrom Howard Ginsberg, raising 60 seedlings to floweringsize, then selecting the best to grow on. In 2011, Micheldesigned an award-winning educational exhibit outliningthe steps to remake Phal. Lowland Juwel. The hybrid

displays characteristics of all three species in itsbackground, Phal. equestris, schilleriana, and stuartiana. Hehad bloomed some of the seedlings but getting all toflower at the same time and at the time of a showremained a challenge.

To synchronize blooming in 2012, Michel waited untilinflorescences had initiated then adjusted thetemperature to be 10°C lower than usual both day andnight during the following two months. This adjustmentdelayed blooming by three to four weeks. All of hisorchids were thus flowering simultaneously in time forOrchidExpo 2012. At the March 2012 show of LesOrchidophiles de Montréal, Michel staged an educationalexhibit which explained the various steps ofhybridization including parental selection, pollination, and raising seedlings to the flowering plant stage but thistime he exhibited 13 flowering specimens including thecultivar Phal. Lowland Juwel ‘Denise’ HCC/AOS, as wellas the parental species and the primary hybrid, Phal.Veitchiana. The grouping was recognized for overallconsistent quality, receiving an Award of Quality.Bravo!- Marilyn Light

In the Fall of last year, I had been asked to teach acourse for ElderCollege (taught to those over 55) onhow to grow orchids at home. I agreed to the offer andsix eager participants faithfully appeared every Tuesdaymorning at the Village of Aspen Lake to learn moreabout our favourite flower, the orchid. One of theprojects we undertook was to repot an orchid – either aCattleya or a Phalaenopsis. One participant, who I’llidentify as Carol, chose to repot a Cattleya. Carol hadlost her husband almost two years prior and, I think, theclass was one step in her healing. The plants we had torepot had been acquired from Crystal Star with theexpressed request that they be in dire need of repotting.Eric and Ellen Lee of Crystal Star Orchids obliged. Iadvised Carol that her plant was being put throughtraumatic changes in the repotting process and not toexpect it to recover right away and be willing to wait ayear or so before there may be signs of blooms.

At the end of the course, one of the Directors at theVillage asked if I would put on a repotting workshop forsome of the residents at the Village in February, 2012. Iwas happy to accept the invitation but would need somehelp so I asked Carol and another participant from theElderCollege course. On Feb 4, 2012 we got togetherand spent about two hours working with the residents torepot their own Phalaenopsis. The resident’s excitementand their admiration of the orchid flowers was evidenton their faces and it was clear that this had been ahighlight of their day. When all was done, Carol told methat the week prior would have marked her 40th weddinganniversary and that, on that day, her husband sent herflowers – miraculously the Cattleya she had repottedmonths before, and nurtured since, had presented herwith two fragrant, splash petal, lavender blooms on the

morning of their anniversary. I do not question thetherapeutic and healing powers of orchids, I saw it thatday.
