One way to get better at chess is to play practice games. But you don’t have to start with all of the pieces on theboard. There are many exercises with fewer pieces thatcan improve your skills. And guess what? They’re fun!

In this class, we present five exercises for practisingwith rooks. Rook endings are the most common kind ofendgame. That’s because rooks are often the last piecesto be developed and traded. Being good at rook endingsis a useful skill that takes time to learn.

It’s best to do the exercises with a stronger player, orat least somebody as good as you. If you have troublefinding an opponent, you can also do most of them on acomputer. Programs usually have a feature that lets youset up positions.

ROOKS vs. PAWNS

This basic practice game is a battle between two mightyrooks and eight passed pawns. There are no kings. It isthe only exercise with special rules. The others are allplayed like normal games. RULES

1. White wins if a pawn reaches the last rank safely.2. Black wins by capturing all of the pawns.3. White makes the first two moves.

(Some people like a3 and h3; others e4 and d4.)Play this exercise from both sides. Eventually you will

find that the rooks have the advantage. If you want tomake it tougher on the rooks, change the rules so thatWhite wins by getting a pawn to the last rank, even if itcan be captured immediately. Or, to make it tougher onthe pawns, change the rules so that White only has onemove on their first turn.

KIRIL’SKLASS

This lesson looks at waysto practice rook endgames.

ROOK + 2 PAWNS vs. ROOK

Winning this game with White is harder than it looks. The white king and pawns must advance together andnot let the black king set up a blockade. The rooks workbetter at a distance: White’s from the side (on the a-fileor h-file), and Black’s from behind the pawns (on the 1strank). Losing a pawn usually means a draw.

ROOK + 4 PAWNS vs. ROOK + 3 PAWNS

Play this game from both sides. As White, your goal isto win. As Black, not to lose. Neither side is easy.

White aims for a winning Lucena position, and Blackfor the Philidor draw. See our classes in Scholar’s Mateissues 122 and 123.

ROOK GAME

This game is the all-purpose exercise for rook endings. The “opening play” is a little strange, but usually afterabout 10 moves, a normal “game-like” position arises. Then the real practice begins.

The main strategic principle in rook endings is rookactivity. We want our rooks to be active (free to moveand attack), and the opponent’s rooks to be passive(stuck guarding pawns).

Sometimes king safety is a factor, especially if a king istrapped along its back rank. But often an active king isan advantage. For example, when he can help supportthe advance of a passed pawn.

EX GAMES

When we are “up the exchange” (R vs. B or R vs. N), weare ahead in material. But it is the quality of the pieces, not the quantity, that gives us an advantage.

The way to show the superiority of a rook over a minorpiece is to open the position as much as possible. Themore open the board becomes, the stronger the rook gets.A bishop also benefits when a game opens up, but not asmuch as a rook. So when you are ahead by “the ex”, thecorrect strategy is the same whether your opponent hasa bishop or knight. Open the position. This is achieved bymeans of trading pawns.

The defender should play to keep things closed andto hold their share of the centre. In general, the minorpiece can deal with one open file, but two open files area problem.

A standard way to win whenyou are ahead the exchange isto give back the rook for a minorpiece and pawn to simplify intoa won pawn ending.

By the way, castling is allowedin these rook games.

That’s it for this class. Happyendings, everybody!

Hey, Mort. It’s great to have an ape for a friend, eh?

Yea, and he’s really good at chess too.Did you know that the DNA for orangutans

and humans is 97 per cent the same ?Wow, so how can we tell them apart?

Well, long orange hair is one difference. But what about us, Marley? Are chess

pieces also like human beings?I don’t think so, Mort. Our DNA is more

closely related to lego people.Cool, some of my best friends are legos!

Although he preferred to play positional games,Winawer was famous for his “do or die” attacks. The popular variation of the French Defence thatbears his name was considered unusual duringhis lifetime. It was only years later, when AronNimzovich and world champion Mikhail Botvinnikbegan to use it regularly, that “the Winawer” wasaccepted as a sound way for Black to defend.

CANADA AND WORLD NEWS

For the first time in nearly 50 years, Earthlings have landed onthe moon. Two pawns, known only as A and B, made the historicflight aboard their Galaxy 500 rocketship, setting down in the Seaof Tranquility on June 3rd. The mission, sponsored by the Chess’n Outer Space Association,

is the first stage of a longterm project to promote chess throughoutthe solar system.

Both pawns received training at the National Academy of StudentAstronauts and were selected from a group of sixteen candidates. An internet video clip of them walking on the moon went viral after

A said to B, “So who are we supposed to play chess with?”

The best player at the zoo is a young orangutan namedTang. In life, he’s quite tame and peaceful. But on thechessboard, he’s wild and aggressive. Watch out.

His opponent in the following game is Taffy, championof the giraffes. Tall, tan, and talented, she is no slouch.

YOU ZZOO?Welcome to the zoo, friends! All the animals are here.

Wild beasts and strange creatures from around the world, ready to smile and entertain you. Good times and sunnyskies. It’s all happening at the zoo.

But there are always two sides to a story. It’s true. Lifeat the zoo really isn’t so wonderful. Not if you are one ofthe animals.

Their cage is their home. Sadly, they are not allowedto go anywhere. No school, no shopping, no vacations,no chess tournaments!

Lucky thing there’s the internet. Now the smart animalsall have computers and spend their free time online, chatting with friends and playing chess.

ORANGUTAN OPENING

An odd looking move, butthe strategy is sound. Whitewill fight for the centre witha bishop fianchetto on b2.

The opening got its namein 1924 at a tournament inNew York, inspired by anorangutan from the Bronx.

1. . . . e5Other choices are 1...d5

2.Bb2 Nf6 3.Nf3 Bf5 4.e3 e65.c4!? and 1...Nf6 2.Bb2 e63.b5 d5 4.Nf3 Be7 5.e3 0-06.c4 with equal positions.

2. Bb2 f6Black protects her e-pawn

and sets up a barrier alongthe long dark diagonal. More common is 2...Bxb4

3.Bxe5 when White is gladto exchange a pawn on thewing for one in the centre.The game normally goes3...Nf6 4.c4 0-0 5.Nf3 Nc66.Bb2 d5 7.e3.Defending by 2...Nc6? is a

blunder that loses a pawnafter 3.b5! Nd4 4.e3 Ne65.Bxe5. Oops.

3. e4!?But Tang never plays it safe.He turns the opening into agambit, sacrificing the pawnfor quick development andthe hope of a strong attack.

Tang is down two pawns, but his lead in developmentcontinues to grow and thepawn on f4 will soon fall.12. . . . Bd713. Rxf4 Bc6?!Finally the giraffe gets her

bishop out. Too bad it’s toolate to stop the attack.

But perhaps there is a rayof hope. It seems that Tangwas having some sort of atechnical problem with hislaptop.

Like most orangutans, heis skeptical of changes. Sohe didn’t update his chesssoftware recently. Uh-oh!

8. Nc3 d6Taffy opens a diagonal for

Taffy texted her opponentto say, “Good game, Tang!”

The orangutan replied witha happy face and “thx”.

As always, the giraffe was sincere when she added,“I hope that we can play together in person someday.”

“Me 2, Taff!”

It’s all happening at the zoo. Come and see. The animals will love it if you do.

14. Nf5! Luckily for Tang, it was just

a weak internet signal thatwas causing the problem. He moved to the far corner

An orangutan’s long arms can stretch 2 metreswide, from finger tip to finger tip.

Orangutans are vegetarians and spend most oftheir time in trees.

There are approximately 110,000 orangutans livingin the wild and about 900 in captivity.

Orangutans are an endangered species. Thebiggest danger to their survival is we humans.

Orangutans are very powerful, but in general theyare not a danger to humans. Some people evenkeep them as pets.

The Orangutan Opening, 1.b4, was given its nameby grandmaster Saveilly Tratakower in 1924. It isalso called the Polish or Sokolsky Opening.

46 Scholar’s Mate 148

It's easy. The board has 8 filesand 8 ranks. Files are the rowsof squares that go up and down. Each one is named by a smallletter. Ranks are rows that gosideways. Each one is namedby a number.Every square also has a name.

The first part is its file and thesecond part is its rank. In thisdiagram, a white pawn movedto e4 and a black pawn to e5.

When moves are written down, the first capital letter shows thepiece which moves. Q is queen.B is bishop. R is rook. N is usedfor knight because the king is K.If there is no capital letter, thatmeans a pawn moves.

Next is the square that thepiece moves to. Bc4 says that abishop moves to the square c4.When a piece is captured, an xis put before the square. Qxf7means a queen takes on f7.

If a pawn captures, the letterof the file it starts on is givenfirst, then an x followed by thesquare it takes on. exd5 says apawn on the e-file captures onthe square d5.

When two pieces of the samekind can go to the same spot, another letter is put after thepiece to show what file it camefrom. Rae1 tells us that a rookon the a-file moves to e1.

If the pieces that can move tothe same spot are on the samefile, then their rank number isadded. N6e4 means the knighton the 6th rank moves to e4.
