Week 7

Here are 6 activities you can do throughout the week! You can always show me your efforts on Tapestry, I’d love to see!

Keep well and remember to try and have some fun too! Miss Demetriou

Subject  Activity

Reading

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NOzgR1ANc4&t=44s

Here is a song to help with

learning some previous red words.

Here are another set of red

words you can practise reading -

why not make another set of

flashcards to decorate your

door/fridge with, you can make a

zig zag book. You can write them in rainbow colours.

I have also attached another grid for you to work through

and practice your new set of red words. Get your dice and

colouring pencils ready and get

reading :D . You could also play

this on the computer, you will

just need a dice and you will need

to ‘fill’ the cell in wherever your

dice lands. I will attach this to

the class page.

https://new.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/2/reading-

robot You can even use this game to practise your red

words on screen. Just type them in and have a go.

Why not have a go at some of these games to help with

your blending.

Understanding

the World

Can you guess what book we are

going to be

reading using

these clues …

Like a giraffe this character

has a black tongue.

A sloth and this character

have terrible claws.

Just like an elephant, this character has terrible tusks.

A dog and this character have

terrible teeth.

I have attached some examples of activities you can

create at home to learn your red words.

Activity 1: Draw a picture, which includes red words with a

colour code to follow.

Activity 2:

Use the playdough recipe from last week and practice

writing the red words in playdough.

Another great way to practice red words, is reading them

in a sentence.

This character also has knobbly knees like a giraffe.

This character has turned out toes like a platypus.

He also has orange eyes like a lemur?

Have you guessed it?

The character I am

describing is the

Gruffalo!

Activity 1 : Draw your own labelled Gruffalo to show me!

Have a read of the story - if you do not have the book, I

have added a link to the story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8sUPpPc8Ws&t=181s

Whilst reading can you be detectives and find these objects:

- A fox

- Mushroom

- Pine cone

- Log

- White poplar

Only do this activity after you have completed the

Understanding the World task, so you do not ruin the

surprise.

Can you answer these questions:

- Point to the mouse

- Point to the fox

- What did the fox do?

- What does an owl use to fly?

- Can you think of another

type of bird?

- Have you ever gone for a

walk in the woods? What did

you do there?

- Why does the mouse say he is going to meet a

Gruffalo for lunch?

- Why does the Gruffalo want to eat the mouse?

- What made the fox run away from the mouse at

the end of the book?

- What do you think you would do if you met a

Gruffalo?

- How could you avoid being eaten?

- How can we tell that it’s daytime in this story?

- What does the mouse in this story like to eat?

- Why can’t the mouse fight the Gruffalo?

- Daffodil

- Frog

- Lily pad

- Lake

- Fir tree

- Bird

- Rock

- Squirrel

- An owl home

Talk about these different objects/species and how they

would be found in a woodland habitat.

Activity 2: (I’ll add on our class page) Can you sort the animals in their habitat? If you do not have a printer, a

drawing would be great too, challenge yourself and add some

more animals and plants.

- Let’s act out the story – what do we need?

Use the book to help you finish the sentences below?

Phonics

Phonics Ruth Miskin (RWI) - select the latest video

After you complete the video, give your child some time to

write the sound down. A great challenge will be to write a

silly sentence using the learnt sound.

Have a go at these games.

Can you spot the sound

blends and complete the

words with the correct

sound?

Maths

Please refer to My Maths for the next two activities

This week we will be focusing on halving- So focus on the

activities which involve halving (sharing into 2 groups) rather

than sharing into groups of 3 or more groups.

This is a great topic to explore in the kitchen. The children

need to see what a half looks like and this can be done by

them cutting up apples/cakes/chocolate/banana/orange

slices etc in half for them to see that 1 object is cut in 2

equal parts, hence the fraction ½ .

I will attach the

halving challenge questions to our

Activities:

1) Why not have a go at making

this game - write the sounds

you want to focus on, on the

rolls/alternatively plastic

cups/buckets and see how

many

balls/pasta/cheerios/marbles

you can score.

2) Make your own noughts and

crosses game using sounds

you would like to focus on.

I have attached below my ‘Story hand’ After guessing the story

of the week, why not draw your own story hand (trace around

your child’s hand) and go over these key features in the story

of ‘The Gruffalo’. Add labels and pictures! This is a great way to

unpick the story.

1. Who are the characters?

2. Where is the story set?

class page on the school website.

Nrich challenge: Think outside the box, or should I say

rectangle to solve this problem.

It is also important that

children work on halving numbers too. Focusing on

numbers they can half and

numbers which do not half

equally is a great discussion to

have and a chance to introduce

odd and even numbers.

I will attach this halving mat

onto our class page, so you can use it to investigate which

numbers you can half (if you do not have a printer, you can

easily draw it out). Work through numbers 1-20 (use

counters/pasta/cheerios etc.) Let me know what you find

out.

3. What happens at the start of the story?

4. What is the problem in the story?

5. How is the problem resolved and how does the story

end?

1) Can you find the halves of these totals?

Religious

Education

How did Jesus rescue people who couldn’t

see?

Turn off the lights and ask the children what they can see.

Is it hard to see the kitchen/living room/ bedroom now?

What about if I light a candle or turn on a torch? Can we see

everything? What would happen if we couldn’t see at all?

What would be hard?

Read or watch the Bible story of Jesus healing the blind

beggar.

● What do you think it was like for the man to not be

able to see anything?

● How would he know where to go?

● Why do you think Jesus wanted to heal his eyes?

Activities:

✞ Try to draw your

friend sitting opposite,

but with a blindfold on.

What does it look like?

Why was it hard? What

other things would be

hard to do if you were

blind?

✞ Make a kaleidoscope,

using coloured beads

and paper in a
