MISSION STATEMENT

Through the combined efforts with Tri-City Baptist Church, Tri-City Christian Academy, and the Chandler School of Fine Arts, International Baptist College is pleased to present its second ministry-wide community dinner theatre production. All of the ministry entities of the Tri-City community work together to produce an evening of entertainment that is family friendly and inviting to the community at large. Our purposes are to:

1. Provide family-friendly entertainment;

2. Create opportunities for mentoring and learning theatre history and skills;

3. Demonstrate a Biblical model of theatre arts for the Christian; and

4. Make our facilities accessible to encourage the building of relationships between our church family and our community.

Our community dinner theatre productions fulfill all three of the purpose goals of Tri-City Baptist Church: to exalt our God, edify each other, and evangelize our community. However, this does not mean that all of our productions will be specifically sacred in nature, but also have broad appeal and community “recog-nize-ability.” The doctrine, philosophy, and practice of Tri-City Baptist Church are well-known, and they may be studied in our literature and experienced in our church services.

PROGRAM NOTES

Charley’s Aunt is widely regarded as the most popular farce in the English language. The story of two young men so passionately in love with their sweet-hearts that they are willing to commit a “pious fraud” seems to resonate with audi-ences worldwide. Add into the drama an easy-going friend, a crabby old man, and sweethearts separated over 20 years ago—and you have the makings of an entertaining evening.

But here is a great deal more to Charley’s Aunt than broad comedy from a one-joke script! The play is a veritable social history lesson in the Edwardian Period of English history. For the clever theater-goer, there are customs and social expecta-tions of the day to be observed and enjoyed.

The plot of the play hinges upon a custom from the time period that may not make sense to a modern audience: young ladies of the day would never be in the presence of young men without a proper female chaperone. The fact that they are at the boys’ rooms makes the situation even more socially awkward!

Notice the importance of social introductions through the course of the play. A conversation cannot take place—let alone a disagreement!—until a proper social introduction is made.

Other fashionable customs of the times represented include formal tea, ladies re-tiring from the table after dinner until the men “come through,” the importance of titles and “old money,” and the upper class’s seemingly total dependence upon “the help.”

The set is not intended to be entirely realistic. As the deception is revealed at the end of the play, the set-behind-the-set is gradually revealed as well. Also, reinforc-ing the theme of “appearances vs. reality,” some of the set pieces become some-thing else. For instance, the piano becomes a stone wall in Act II.

The costumes represent the merging of two eras. For example, the older Donna Lucia and her young ward wear gowns more typical of the late Victorian pe-riod. The younger girls wear gowns more typical of the late Edwardian era, foreshadowing the coming “Jazz Age.”

Even the artistic choices for Charley’s Aunt remind us that things are not always as they seem.

BIOGRAPHIES

Christopher Ball (Colonel Sir Francis Chesney)A Gilbert resident, this is Chris’s first production with Tri-City Baptist Ministries. His favorite scene is when Sir Francis proposes to “Donna Lucia.” Recently married to Tessa (the real Donna Lucia), he wishes to thank “his beloved wife for drag-ging me into this, um, . . . great experience!”

Tessa Ball (Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez)Currently a music teacher at Santan Learning Center, Tessa earned an M.A in Performing Arts from Bob Jones Uni-versity in Greenville, South Carolina. Tessa has long had a passion for and involvement in theatre. “Thank you to my dear obliging husband, whom I conned into acting in a play with me. Darling, you are my star!” Tessa’s favorite director’s quote is, “Ok. I have good news and I have bad news. Which do you want first?”

Kayla Deyton (Kitty Verdun)A senior at International Baptist College, this is Kayla’s first production with Tri-City Baptist Ministries. Her favorite director’s quote is, “This is polish, baby!” Kayla wants to thank Liz for being there “when I needed a hug” and Adam for “making me laugh when I needed it.” “Thanks, Mom & Dad, for driving me hither and yon and allowing me to be a part of this great performance. And thanks to all the cast and crew for making this performance amazing.”

Eric Alexander (Brassett)Attending Tri-City now for 5½ years, Eric brings a lot of humor to the cast. A veteran of the stage, this is Eric’s third production for Tri-City Baptist Ministries having served in “Holy Night of Miracles” in 2009 and playing Officer O’Hara in last year’s Arsenic & Old Lace. Eric’s favorite scene is when “Donna Lucia” must serve tea. He says, “It’s obvious that the TBC staff needs sensitivity training for mak-ing me the servant—LOL. It’s been a great privilege to do this again. Thank you for giving us this opportunity.”

Page 7: Can we know Tri-City Baptist Ministries presents …tricitysermons.org/files/ibcs/program_2012.pdf · Charley’s Aunt is widely regarded as the most popular farce in the English

Klay Klemic (Jack Chesney)This is Klay’s first year here at Tri-City. A native of Cedar City, Utah, Klay much prefers open plain and horseback to suburban living and “busses.” Welcome, Klay to the Tri-City Baptist Ministries Community Theatre family.

Adam LeRoy Mott II (Charley Wykeham)His fifth year at Tri-City Baptist Church, Adam is a sophomore at International Baptist College. This is Adam’s third production with the Stertzbachs and fourth at Tri-City. Adam’s favorite scene is Kitty’s “proposal” to Jack.

Jesse Muldoon (Lord Fancourt Babberley)Jesse has been at Tri-City Baptist Ministries for 8 years; he is a junior at International Baptist College. He has been married to Katie (Ela Delahay) since last summer; as for children, Jesse says they have “only a few—none to speak of. We have 2 dogs.” Jesse would like to thank Katie for “her love and sup-port through this event, for all the times she ran lines with me and her willingness to support the play cast in any way she could—from encouragement to food! I would also like to thank my teachers who have been patient with me with the time commitment this play has needed. Last, thanks to the directors who so graciously gave me an opportunity to be in the play!”

Katie Muldoon (Ela Delahay)Katie’s favorite scenes are “any with my husband Jesse in a wig!” This is Katie’s first production with Tri-City Baptist Min-istries and says “thank you to all my colleagues who are here to see me. And thank you to Jesse for ‘begging me’ to try out with him. It has been so fun to work on this production together.”

Patrick A. Myers (Stephen Spettigue)Having played the unforgettable Teddy in last year’s Arsenic & Old Lace, this is Patrick’s second performance with Tri-City Baptist Ministries where he is the Director of Food Services. Patrick wants to thank the guests for attending and hopes it will be a very enjoyable evening. Numbers 6:24-26.

Elisabeth Anne Owens (Amy Spettigue)Liz is a senior at International Baptist College and plans on graduating this May. This is Elisabeth’s “first ‘real’ produc-tion.” “Big thanks to all my adoring fans! A special thanks to my family. I love you, Mom, Dad, Aaron, Alicia, and my beau-tiful nephew Levi! Oh, and a thanks to Geoff. And then maybe a little thanks to my fellow cast members, except Brassett.”

Marianne Domico (Assistant Director)Although a Tri-City family members for less than a year, Marianne has spent over ten years in front of and behind the stage lights as an actor, makeup artist, sound technician and director for many shows. “To my makeup crew: thanks for putting in the extra hours and making my jobs easier. To my cast peeps: your patience, flexibility, sense of humor, and love have made long nights so much more enjoyable.”

David and Rebecca Stertzbach (Directors)Pastor Dave is the Music Pastor of Tri-City Baptist Church, and Becky is the Executive Assistant at International Baptist College. Coming to Tri-City in July of 2005, this is the second ministry-wide community theatre production for the Stertzbachs. Having directed 14 different productions in the last 18 years of ministry (this is their second time directing Charley’s Aunt), the Stertzbachs have enjoyed working with a cast consisting of adults. It has been a pleasure to work with this very fun cast. Special thanks to the many unsung heroes of this production. And thank you, Laura and Davy, for your excitement and patience. We love you.
