I SAY GOODBYE
2015 – 2016 District Director Sandra Hachey, DTM
We had our fair share of
hiccups this year but all
in all we did very well.
The District team has
worked hard to make it
a year for the
membership to learn
and grow. In my personal opinion the 2015-
2016 year has been a successful one for District
45. As of the date of writing this we have
chartered 9 new clubs and 16 members have
earned their DTM. We have awarded 487
Educational awards in total. We are working the
program. KUDOS to each and every member –
you are a Diamond.
Now on a personal note. Six years ago, incoming
District Governor Sue Francesco asked me if I
was interested in taking on the role of being the
Area 4 Governor. I had been recommended by
the then Area 4 Governor Sharon Jacques. I
wasn’t 100% sure that I had what it takes but
knew that I would give it my all. I also knew that
this is a great district within a great organization
and that I had fabulous people that would be
there for me, to guide and nurture me along the
leadership path. I said yes and so started my
journey.
Six years later, what can I share with you? Has it
been easy – no. Has it been worth it – you better
believe it – every last minute of it. The learning
And growth – that has been applied both personally
and professionally – is amazing. The best part is, I got
to do it with my friends and while having fun. What
more could a person ask for???
I have been afforded the opportunity to travel to
places around the world that were on my bucket list
and some that never were simply because they were
too impossible to dream to be there. I have made
friends from around the world, trained with them,
and found out that they have the same desires and
dreams that I do. We all want to improve our
communication and leadership skills. Not only that
but we want to help each other do that. One of my
favorite quotes from Dr. Ralph Smedley is
"Ours is the only organization I know dedicated to
the individual, we work together to bring out the
best in each of us and then we apply these skills to
help others."
That sums it up nicely. No matter whether you’re at
the Club, Area, Division, District, Region or
International level members want to develop and
grow and help others do the same – plain and simple.
Thank you for allowing me to take this journey.

We Say Hello The 2016 – 2017 Senior Leadership Team
It is my honor to serve District 45
as your District Director for the
coming year. Over the past few
years of District Leadership
service, I have had the pleasure
of working with many dedicated
members as District leaders,
on Conference Planning
committees, conducting
Speech Contests and TLIs, and as club officers. Without
the hard work of these leaders, we could not deliver the
best possible learning environment for our members. We
have assembled a diverse and talented team of District
leaders for the coming year and I am confident that the
District will continue to grow in size and success this year.
My goals for the coming year are to improve
communication within our District, to engage our
members to provide the best possible experience within
our clubs, and to continue to provide content at our
District events to invigorate our membership. To reach
these goals, it will take the efforts of many members
throughout our district. Toastmasters is not a passive
organization. It takes active participation in club
meetings, TLIs, speech contests and District Conferences
to provide the world class member experiences which
allow our speaking and leadership skills to improve.
We have an exciting year planned for 2016-17. Steve
Chen, Region 9 International Director will be the Keynote
Speaker for our Fall Conference on Nov. 4th
– 6th
at the
Algonquin Resort, St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, NB. The Spring
Conference on May 19th
– 21st
will likely include two Past
International Presidents and Accredited Speakers as our
honored guests. I encourage everyone to save the dates
for these District events.
Remember that all of the Toastmasters recognition
programs begin with understanding and meeting the
needs of our members. I believe that if we, as a District,
continue to focus on the member, all of our goals for the
coming year will be achievable. I look forward to working
with the members throughout our District to provide a
world class membership experience in all our clubs.
I joined Toastmasters in 2009 as the
Charter President of Rivertalkers
#1121700 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia
after almost a year of helping to
establish this new club. I attended my
first major Toastmasters event outside
of the club in June, 2009 –
the last Region conference in
Moncton, New Brunswick.
Meeting so many Toastmasters from across the Region (even
the International President-Elect, Gary Schmidt) opened my
eyes to the possibilities outside the club.
In 2010, I joined Toast of the Coast #4592 and after moving to
Halifax, Nova Scotia, I joined Schooner #3978. I served as the
Area 1 Director in 2011-12 and Division D Director the following
year. I thought that would be the end of my District leadership
journey for several years as I was taking my Certified
Management Accountant designation. In 2014, the role of
Public Relations Manager unexpectedly became available and I
decided to step up to the challenge.
As Program Quality Director, my role is to promote quality
clubs. This will involve meaningful training at the Toastmasters
Leadership Institutes and ensuring more clubs take advantage
of this training. Clubs are better able to provide the
environment for member success when the officers are
properly trained. I want to see all clubs having fun and
productive meetings where members have ample opportunity
to succeed. I would love to see at least 45% of clubs achieving
Distinguished by April 30th
and 65% of our clubs reaching
Distinguished by June 30th
.
I will encourage all clubs to fully complete the Club Success
Plan, as this establishes the club’s road map to success. I urge
all clubs to also complete the Moments of Truth, as this
provides a check-up on how well the club is meeting the needs
of its members.
I am excited to be working with you this year as your Program
Quality Director. Together, we can ensure all clubs in District 45
are Where Leaders Are Made!

Thank you for electing me to be your
Club Growth Director for 2016 –
2017. At this point, you may be
wondering about my background.
Who is this Jeff person anyway? How
do people pronounce his name? I am
Jeff Hebert (pronounced A-bear). I am
a Toastmaster, and engineer,
a husband, and a father. I
spent most of my adult life in
Texas where I met the love of my life, Cheryl. We moved to
Maine in 2009. We now live in Saco, Maine with our son
Raine (pronounced rain like Maine). I spend my spare time
relaxing with family and watching my son's baseball and
football games.
I joined Toastmasters in July 2000 to overcome fear and
help improve my technical presentations. I am an engineer,
and I recognized that I had a hard time communicating
important ideas. Toastmasters helped me present my data
as a coherent story. Peers and managers recognized my
improving communication skills. I soon became a club
officer and then an Area Governor. In 2014, I became active
in District leadership when I volunteered to help the
Division B Governor. I was awarded the 2014 – 2015 District
45 Toastmaster of the Year for my contributions. At the
time, I didn’t realize what a positive impact I was having. I
was simply doing things I loved to do, and a few things that
were terrifying. I was working with great people on a
variety of challenging projects. This may or may not be your
idea of fun, but it is exactly what I love to do. I served as
Division B Director from 2015 – 2016 where I worked with a
great team of Area Directors. They did such a great job that
I even had time to help with the District 45 Spring
Conference in Bar Harbor. At each step in my Toastmasters
journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons and met terrific
people who helped me get the job done.
This year, for me, membership growth is a top priority. I will
be helping clubs engage existing members to enhance their
experience. I will help our clubs demonstrate to prospective
members how our program can enhance their
performance. I will also provide frequent tips to help. I look
forward to working with you this year to help strengthen
your clubs so every member has the opportunity to
succeed.
I joined Toastmasters in 2004 to
improve my leadership and speaking
skills. Actually, I was invited by my
colleague, Alain Bilodeau, to an open
house/potluck. I was hooked.
With much encouragement from my
mentors, Wendy Harding, DTM and
Heather Perkins, DTM, I
took on the challenge of
then Area Governor in
2006. By 2008 I achieved my first Distinguished
Toastmasters Award. Over the years I have participated in
leadership roles at the club and district level and I am
always promoting Toastmasters outside my club, whether
on a one-on-one basis or in my various community
endeavours.
As the Public Relations Manager (PRM) for District 45, my
responsibility is “to generate positive awareness of the
Toastmasters brand for the purpose of attracting and
retaining members.” I will keep my toastmaster members
well informed by working closely with our newly appointed
monthly newsletter editor, Heather Perkins, DTM, who has
assembled a team of expert TMs to assist her. Our district
website (D45Toastmasters.com) will be updated on a
regular basis with information regarding events around the
district. This includes conference information on the hotel
and conference. Our social media sites such as our
Facebook page and Twitter accounts will also be updated
regularly with similar information.
“Good public relations will build membership and gain
public recognition.”

July 2016
The Spring Conference was co-chaired by Jeff Hebert and Bob Bechtold. They have shared their comments on the
conference from differing perspectives. Jeff talks about the planning and Bob about the conference itself.
COMMUNICATION MAKES A CONFERENCE
The weekend of May 20 to 22, 2016 was a
highlight in Bar Harbor. The beautiful
location was matched only by the gathering
of terrific people. District 45 Toastmasters
traveled from Maine, New Hampshire,
Vermont, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia,
and New Brunswick. We came for fun, education, and
celebration. We came to ENERGIZE, MOTIVATE, and INSPIRE
each other. We succeeded.
Our work began many months before the conference. Bob
Bechtold and I led the conference planning activities. We
gathered a team of volunteers. Each committee chair had
full autonomy over their part of the conference. We gave
them guidance when they needed help making decisions.
We helped them find solutions when they faced problems.
We communicated frequently with each committee chair.
Each week we held a conference call to discuss progress. All
chairs were invited to attend, but only a few reported out
during the call. Whenever a specific chair had an issue or
major accomplishment, we called on them to report at the
next call. This enabled us to address large issues quickly and
effectively. Between calls, Bob and I fielded smaller
questions. When we could not answer a question, we
directed the chair to someone with the answer, or added the
issue to our next meeting agenda.
Two-way communication was a key feature of our planning.
Bob and I communicated expectations to each committee
chair early in the process. We provided a basic checklist to
get them started and asked for frequent updates. After each
conference call, minutes were published to all conference
chairs and the top district leaders. We setup an online
workbook that had critical information that the committee
chairs needed. This included action item lists, contact lists,
schedules, communication plans, meeting agendas &
summaries, and even maps of the complex. The conference
was a success due to the planning and actions of many
people. Communication between all conference chairs
helped ensure we resolved issues quickly. Communication
makes a conference.
SUCCESS!
That is how I would describe the District 45
Spring Conference at The Atlantic Oceanside
and Event Center, Bar Harbor, Maine. Those
who were able to attend participated in
professional educational sessions, and
listened to outstanding speakers in the
International Speech and Table Topics Contest.
One of the highlights of the conference was our Keynote
Speaker, Sally Newell Cohen, Chief Operations Officer from
TMI who spoke on building quality clubs. She also
participated in a Q&A panel for the new Toastmasters
International Revitalized Educational Program, due out in
2017. Sally was impressed with our conference and the
energy exhibited by all those who attended. Hopefully each
of you all had a chance to speak with Sally either at dinner or
at the hospitality suite.
Over 160 Toastmasters attended. The silent auction, under
the management of Melinda McCormack also set a new fund
raising record with over $1,400 raised.
The conference energy was very contagious. Every time you
walked into the room you could see people laughing, smiling
and speaking with other members of our “TM family.” The
most satisfying, was all of the positive feedback the
conference team received from attendees.
Here is an example of some of contagious energy. A short
video from Claudine Pohl and Kristopher Woods of Saint John
Toastmasters Club.

It was very entertaining to watch the first timers run around
the conference filling out with their visas as they met
dignitaries and other Toastmasters.
Congratulations! Wendy Harding, who won the raffle, an
Amazon Kindle Fire HD10. Candice Buell, Hospitality Chair did
a fabulous job. There was lots of food, beer, wine and of
course margaritas!
Looking forward to seeing you all in St. Andrews, New
Brunswick in November.

Travelling Gavel Coming to Nova Scotia
Toastmasters clubs in Nova Scotia (Divisions D and F) will soon have access to a new
tool to promote inter-club visits. The Travelling Gavel, already used in Division A, will
be making its rounds in clubs starting in September. The gavel will begin its journey in
Dartmouth Toastmasters Club 3119 and visiting Toastmasters will have the
opportunity to take the gavel back to their home club.
The rules of the Travelling Gavel are simple: at least three visiting Toastmasters must
contact the host club and take on assigned meeting roles. This encourages visiting
Toastmasters to play an active role in the meeting and showcase skills to other clubs. At the end of the meeting,
the gavel will be presented to the visiting Toastmasters and taken to their home club. The new host club of the
gavel will inform the Division Directors of the change and the gavel will announce its move via Twitter, club
websites and Facebook pages.
If you are interested in taking part in or receiving information about the Travelling Gavel initiative, please contact
Phil Laven of Dartmouth Toastmasters ([email protected]).

Do You Stay in Toastmasters for the Same Reasons You Joined?
- David Howe, TM
Anytime I want to improve a skill, I
devour every book possible on the
subject. As I completed the 4th or
5th sales book, there was one
common piece of advice they all
recommended - become a great
communicator. The best possible
way of doing that? Join a local
Toastmasters club. So, I joined in 2015. I joined to
improve my communication skills which in turn would
improve my ability to sell. The funny thing is, while I
joined for this reason, it wasn’t the reason I kept coming
back.
Growing up and through university, I played competitive
basketball. I was always on a team. I liked being part of a
team. As I grew older, I began to miss this part of
basketball. Sure, shooting hoops was still fun, but a big
part was missing. Soon after university, I started working
remotely, and before I knew it, I was spending a lot of
time working alone in coffee shops or my apartment.
When I joined Toastmasters, I became a part of a team
again. The sense of community simply blew me away.
Everyone is there for a common goal: to improve their
own communication skills and to help others do the
same. That common goal is the first reason why I stayed
at Toastmasters.
As an added bonus, I was also developing something I
underappreciated: everyday communication skills. I was
learning about body language, vocal variety, leadership,
and more. In comparison, I recently joined a yoga class
after spending many years weightlifting. I initially started
it to improve my flexibility. After a few weeks, I noticed
that my teacher would preach that yoga was a practice
for life, not a “quick fix”. This stuck with me. I couldn’t see
myself lifting heavy weights when I was 80, but I could
see myself practicing yoga. This mindset shift allowed me
to focus on the small details of yoga that I may have been
impatient with if I was looking for quick results.
Toastmasters is like yoga; it’s a practice for life. After all,
we communicate with each other every day.
Communication IS my life, and Toastmasters gives me the
skills I need to communicate clearly and effectively, and
the confidence I need to speak my mind. This is the second
reason I stayed.
Lastly, Toastmasters was just a good time spent with good
people. I use to fear “table topics”, but now I look forward to
them. When I stood up to give my first speech, the sweat was
visible on my forehead and my knees were shaking so much, I
thought I was going to fall over. But I’m glad I did it. I also love
hearing everyone's stories through their speeches. It’s inspiring
to be around other people who are as focused on self-
improvement as I am. I know how powerful an influence your
environment has on you, and Toastmasters has changed me for
the better. This positive environment that I am a part of is the
last reason why I keep coming back to Toastmasters.
We never know where the first step takes us. I stayed because I
like being part of a team who looks out for each other. I stayed
because communication is a lifelong skill, and Toastmasters is
the perfect place to practice it. I stayed because Toastmasters
is a fun time with a group of people looking to improve
themselves in a caring, positive environment. Most things I do
are conscious steps I take towards becoming the best
entrepreneur I can be. And going back to the reason I joined
Toastmasters in the first place, Sam Altman, president of Y
Combinator, once said “founders [entrepreneurs] that are hard
to talk to are almost always bad. Communication is a very
important skill for founders–in fact, I think this is the most
important rarely discussed founder skill.” I have not found a
better way to improve my communication skills required to
become a great founder. That is well worth the small price of
admission itself.
Let me ask you again. Is the reason you joined Toastmasters
the same reason you stayed?
Share your story about why you stay in Toastmasters?

DISTINGUISHED TOASTMASTERS FOR MAY AND JUNE 2016
The Distinguished Toastmaster award is the highest our organization bestows. The
DTM recognizes a superior level of achievement in both communication and
leadership. Distinguished Toastmasters are a rare breed. Less than one percent of all
Toastmasters ever achieve that designation.
Patricia (Trish) Smith became
a Toastmaster in February
2012. She is a member of
Sussex Toastmasters #5386.
Trish served as the Area 23
Governor in 2013 – 2014 year
and achieved Select
Distinguished Area. Her HPL
project was as Quality
Manager, she implemented
the ISO 17025 Management System as a Six Sigma Black
Belt project for the product development lab at work.
Trish says that the single most important thing she
learned during her journey to DTM is know your team.
Understanding what motivates them and fuels their
energy is key to establishing and maintaining an
positive environment that fosters creativity and
collaboration.
Glen Gorman joined
Toastmasters in October
2010. He is a member of Civil
Speakers #6423, Rise and
Shine Advanced
Toastmasters #3349440, and
Golden Toastmasters #2672.
Glen served as Area
Governor in 2009 – 2010 and
achieved Distinguished Area.
He also served as the District Conference Treasurer that
same year. His HPL project was organizing a Division TLI.
Glen says that if you focus on the positive good things
will happen.
Every 5th anniversary of a club is recognized. Once a club has reached the half-century
mark, every anniversary is included and celebrated. Few clubs charter in July so there are
no clubs that are celebrating a 5th anniversary although the Golden Club in Fredericton is
close (29 years). Stay tuned for club anniversaries in future months.

Things to Remember
As of July 1, 2016, there is no longer
a grace period for dues. As a club
officer, I must make sure all dues are
collected and paid online by October
1st and April 1st. If I don’t do this, one
of our members might not be eligible
for a contest. Contestants must be a
member in good standing of a club in
good standing. If dues haven’t been
paid for 8 members (including our
contestant), by the contest date, our
contestant won’t be able to compete.
Can’t have that happen!
Membership Tip
Your first club growth tip is “challenge your
members.” People grow by practicing new skills.
Each Toastmasters meeting provides us a
chance to try something new. Club leaders
should encourage members to take on new
roles. Your members don’t always recognize
their own potential. As a leader, you can point
out their talents and suggest opportunities to
grow. Recommend that they sign up to be an
evaluator, or Toastmaster of the meeting.
Suggest that they write a competitive speech,
or volunteer to help your Division Director by
presenting at a TLI. When you challenge your
members, they will grow with the experience.
That will keep the members engaged with your
club. That will also demonstrate to visitors
that your club is actively working to improve.
Gently challenge your members to help your
club grow.

This is Your Newsletter
The newsletter will be published monthly, no later than the 2nd
of each month. It will be sent to you directly as well as being
posted on the District website (http://d45toastmasters.com/newsletter). Each issue will have a theme of either leadership,
education or marketing and public relations. In each newsletter, you will see an article from one or more of the District
team. Educational and leadership achievements will be recognized as will club and member anniversaries. There will be
information on the upcoming conference, a District calendar showing upcoming events at the Area, Division and District
level events, District incentives and much more.
To make this your newsletter, we need your input. Submit articles, pictures, features on members, whatever you want to
see in the newsletter. We would like to have your brief comments on articles which could be included in a “letters to the
editor” section. The District reserves the right to edit articles to fit within the newsletter format. Articles should be no more
than 300 words long. Submissions should be sent to the newsletter editor, Heather Perkins, at [email protected].
