The mosaic portrays “Christ as King of Glory,” in the benevolent gestureof the blessing, holding the book through which He becomes reality to man.A careful study of the seemingly abstract forms which enclose the figurereveals the most ancient Christian symbol, the fish. The off-roundhemispheres upon which Christ stands symbolize the world over which Hereigns. The tongues of fire from Pentecost are represented to the left of theChrist figure. Concordia Theological Seminary wasfounded as a result of the efforts ofDr. Johannes Konrad Wilhelm

Loehe of Bavaria, Germany, WilhelmSihler and Dr. Friedrich Conrad DietrichWyneken of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Dr. Wyneken recognized the need tominister to the thousands of Germanimmigrants who had come to America inthe mid-1800s and pleaded with his fellowLutherans in Germany to send pastors orto finance their training. ConcordiaTheological Seminary was established inFort Wayne in 1846, one year before TheLutheran Church—Missouri Synod(LCMS) was organized, and has served theSynod ever since. The seminary wasmoved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1861 andthen to Springfield, Illinois, in 1875 beforereturning to Fort Wayne in 1976.

During the absence of the seminaryfrom Fort Wayne, the LCMS maintained

Concordia Junior College in Fort Waynefrom 1861 to 1957 and establishedConcordia Senior College on this campusin 1957. In 1975, the LCMS elected to movethe senior college program to Ann Arbor,Michigan, and to return the seminary toFort Wayne. Thus, Fort Wayne has thedistinction of being the only city in thecountry that has never been without oneof the Synod’s ministerial schools.

The 191 acres on which the seminarynow resides were originally an Indianreservation deeded to Pe-chewa, a MiamiIndian chief who later became a Christian.In the early 1900s the land was purchasedby the Charles Kramer family, whohomesteaded it. The Kramer homesteadwas then acquired by the LCMS, whichbuilt the campus between 1955 and 1957to be the home of Concordia SeniorCollege.

The campus wasdesigned by EeroSaarinen whose design

credits include the GatewayArch in St. Louis, Missouri.Saarinen’s plans for thecampus follow theScandinavian village designpopular from 1300-1700A.D., where the chapel wasfront and center while stillsheltering the courtyardfrom wind and otherweather. According toSaarinen, the buildings weregrouped in the village designso as to “provide a quiet, unifiedenvironment in which the students couldfind a complete, balanced life, and yet onewhich was related to the outside world.”

Each dorm has 18 rooms and isdesigned to be a mini-village within abuilding. Although Kramer Chapel faceswest, the interior has an eastward focustoward the Holy Land.

In order to get more than one floorunder one set of walls and one roof, themezzanine concept was used. The libraryand dining hall are the most prominentexamples of this concept.

At the time of design no provisionswere made for the handicapped. In recentyears handicapped access has been addedincluding elevators, ramps and parkingfacilities.

The Concordia Senior Collegecampus was the first college campus inAmerica to receive a First Honor Awardfrom the American Institute of Architects.

The diamond shaped bricks, patentedas the Concordia Bricks, run horizontallyon the main campus buildingsrepresenting our relationship to oneanother in community. Kramer Chapel,however, presents the one exception as itsbricks run vertically to symbolize God’srelationship with us.

Saarinen on His Work

“Our concern was the creation of an architecture which would support andexpress the idea of this particular college. We wanted to create anenvironment appropriate to the intellectual and spiritual training of young

men who would go on to professional studies in theology.“The strategic question was the

relation of the buildings to the world. Onthe one hand, we all felt that they shouldnot be inward-turning and removed likemedieval monasteries; but, on the otherhand, we felt the group must—for itspurpose—have a tranquil atmosphere of atleast partial self-sufficiency.

“In a village of the North Europeantype, the chapel is placed in the center, onthe highest spot, an all–important symbolaround which the other buildings aregrouped.

“In a careful study of this site, wefound we could use a little hill next to thevalley (which is now the lake) as the heartof the campus. We could put the chapelhere to dominate the entire group and tobe reflected in the lake below.

“The chapel was, of course, thebuilding that required the most thought andimagination. This is the building wherespiritual values are epitomized and these are the hardest qualities to express in brick andmortar. We realized that light is an effective agent in creating a spiritual atmosphere. Weused very low lighting from the side walls as well as lighting from above to get the restful,balanced quality we sought. Additional side windows dramatized the altar as a focal point.

“We wanted to work with the simple chapel shape appropriate to the Lutheranchurch and to create an interior in which the relationship of human beings to enclosedspace would be appropriate and inspiring. The problem was also to find a shape andmaterials which would allow the spoken word to be heard clearly and one in which theorgan could swell to its fullest. We believe the high chapel interior answered theserequirements.”

Campus Grounds

The campus sits on 191 acres of gentlyrolling land. A man-made lake coversnine acres. When the lake was

created, dirt from the existing marshlandwas used to build up the upper plaza onwhich the chapel and educationalbuildings stand. Aside from its obviousbeauty, the lake serves more practicalpurposes. It serves to drain the campusand has a spillway to the St. Joseph Riverif the water level is too high. There arepumps to bring in water from the river ifthe water level drops too low.

All trees, other than the native forestalong Clinton Street, were chosen for theirancient appearance. Other trees on thecampus include ash, flowering crab, buckeye, maples, gums, weeping willow

and locust trees. The landscaping of thecampus was completed by Dan Kiley, alandscape architect whose credits includethe Air Force Academy in ColoradoSprings.

Each season reveals a different phaseof campus beauty. In the springwildflowers, flowering shrubs and treesbring life to the campus in pastel colors.During the summer there are broadexpanses of green lawns and meadows. Inthe autumn the hardwoods provide abeautiful display of rich colors. When thewinter snow covers the landscape andpartially covers the trees, the contrastingshades complement the white buildingswith their dark roofs.

Kramer Chapel

A t the center of the Concordia campus,physically and spiritually, Kramer Chapelrises far above all other campus buildings

and can be seen from any point on campus as theinterior rises to a height of 97 feet. The chapel isnoted for its fine acoustics, complementary tospoken, sung and instrumental activities.

Looking toward the chancel, one will see thefree-standing altar created from one piece ofVermont marble weighing six tons. One hundredand sixty-seven large triangles outline theConcordia Bricks in the wall behind the cross.

Instead of breaking up the ceiling line at thefront of the chancel as is usually done in churches,Saarinen achieved the illusion of separation of thechancel from the nave by use of the skylight, whichfloods only the chancel with light. This is mostobvious during the morning chapel services heldfor students, faculty, staff and visitors. The chapelseats 750.

The baptismal font was added in 1997 whenthe choir loft was extended to twice its originalsize. The font consists of one piece of Indianalimestone and weighs 3,000 pounds.

The 56-rank, Schlicker pipe organ wasdesigned by Saarinen and organ designer HermanL. Schlicker and built by the Schlicker OrganCompany of Buffalo, New York. Two thousand ninehundred and nine pipes, some of which rise to aheight of 50 feet, are displayed on the west wall ofthe chapel.

The bell tower beside Kramer Chapel measures 103.5 feetfrom the plaza to the tip of the cross. The bell weighs 1,320pounds and measures 39 inches wide by 33 inches high. Thebell’s G sharp note announces daily chapel and is controlledelectronically from inside Kramer Chapel. In designing the belltower, Saarinen took the free-standing tower, already present inmedieval Finnish churches, and adapted it in highly stylized formto the setting of the campus.

Werner AdministrationBuilding

The administration building providesoffices for the president, the academicdean, chief operating officer, BusinessOffice staff and campus switchboard.

Faculty OfficesFaculty members are provided

separate offices. Some offices are housed inthe faculty office building on the east end ofWyneken Hall and others are located inJerome Hall and Augustine Hall.

Springfield Bell TowerLocated on the east side of the chapel

is the Springfield Bell Tower. The bell wascast in 1882 for use at the seminary’sSpringfield campus.When the seminarywas moved back to Fort Wayne in 1976, thebell was put in storage until 1984 when itwas rediscovered and students resolved tohang the bell in the Kramer Chapel belfry.However, in 1993 the seminary architectsrecommended construction of the bell’sown tower because the belfry was notdesigned to hold the additional weight ofthe bell. The new tower was dedicated in1994. Graduating students who close thebook on their final classes ring theSpringfield Bell in celebration of thecompletion of their seminary education.

The Wayne and Barbara Kroemer Library Complex

The Wayne and Barbara KroemerLibrary, dedicated in January 2015,combines 15,000 square feet of

renovated space with 45,000 square feetof newly constructed space to form thelargest Lutheran theological library in theworld. Constructed along the shore of thelake, the library expansion furtherstrengthens the centrality of the chapeland provides many quiet, naturally lightedspaces for reading and writing, reflectingand studying.

The “King of Glory” mosaic marksthe main entry into the library andanchors the north end of the corridor thatruns the length of the complex. Thiscentral spine features permanent works ofart, such as the “Saint Jerome in HisStudy” painting and “The Everlasting Son

of the Father” carved relief, as well asexhibition spaces for rotating collectionsof art.

The Meinders Learning Commonswelcomes users with the most popularservice functions—scanning, copying,printing and computing—and providesbrowsing of current journal issues andnew books. Staff in this area provide userservices and reference assistance. Thelibrary administrative offices and theKemmerle Gallery are located on themezzanine level. The Ross Rare BookRoom, housing books dating from theadvent of the printing press as well as theseminary archives, is on the lower level.

the live roof and paver stonelibrary plaza. A grand stairwayalongside the carved relief leadsdown to lake level.

The lake level houses thelibrary’s reference, journal andcirculating book collections.Exceeding 175,000 books, thesecollections form the largesttheological seminary collection inthe state of Indiana and landsKroemer Library in the top fivelargest freestanding Lutheranseminary collections in the world.

Seven study rooms and sevengroup rooms, all equipped withwhite boards, provide learningspaces for individuals and groups.Ten doctoral studies overlook thesouth bay of the lake. TheMarquart Study models the booksfound in a biblically based,confessionally Lutheran pastor’sstudy and serves as a workshopfor the students in the churchworker formation programs. TheChildren and Family Room housesage-appropriate materials foreveryone in the seminarycommunity. The Wolf Lanternprovides a quiet, sheltered readingloft at the end of the central spine.

With all of its collectionsconsolidated in one complex, theWayne and Barbara KroemerLibrary serves students, faculty, staff, areaclergy and the Fort Wayne communitydirectly, shares its resources with otherlibraries throughout the United States, andextends it services to LCMS professional

church workers throughout the world,fulfilling the seminary’s mission to teachthe faithful, reach the lost and care for all.

Luther HallPreviously home to the

campus infirmary, LutherHall is now a special occasionfacility used for socialgatherings, receptions andretreats. Luther Hall wasnamed after Martin Luther,one of the forefathers of theLutheran church. Moreinformation about MartinLuther can be found on page21 of this guidebook.

Sihler AuditoriumNamed after seminary founder

and first president, Wilhelm Sihler,Sihler Auditorium is used by theseminary community forconvocations, sermon or servicerehearsals, concerts and assembliessuch as the annual SymposiaSeries. This state-of-the-artauditorium seats 450 and is alsoavailable for rental by communityorganizations.

Katherine Luther Dining Hall

The campus dining facility wasnamed after Katherine Luther, thewife of Martin Luther. Katie, who

was once a nun, married Luther shortlyafter she left the convent. They had sixchildren. Naming the dining hall afterKatie Luther was a great statement abouther ability to nourish the Luther familyand manage her husband’s greatgenerosity.

The dining hall food service providesmeals for residential students, off-campusmarried students, professors, staff andcampus visitors. The dining hall, like TheWayne and Barbara Library Complex, alsoutilizes the mezzanine concept. Thefacility seats more than 300 guests. In

addition, 18 guests can be served in theprivate dining room on the mezzanine.The dining hall can be rented byorganizations for banquets or receptionswith the food service providing thecatering.

The carved brick relief on the southwall was designed by sculptor William C.Severson and also expresses these wordsof the Te Deum:

“All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father everlasting.”

The work interprets these words ofpraise and thanksgiving in terms of theearly Christian choral thanksgivingservices at the time of harvest. The

symbol of the raised hands is anear eastern form of adoration.

The incised brick baserelief is inset with coloredplastic, enameled copper andstained glass chips. All of thecolor patterns represent thefruits of harvest and take theshape of a loaf of bread.

The lower level of Craemer Hallhouses the Food Co-op. Recognizing thatmost students live on a limited income,the seminary has established a co-opsystem to help provide for the needs of theseminarian and his family.

The Food Co-op provides roughly 75%of the grocery needs of student families.Commonly needed household items suchas cleaning supplies, diapers and shampooare also available.

Students spendpoints, allocated monthlybased on family size, onpurchases at the Co-op.Students volunteer timeeach month performingneeded tasks such asstocking shelves, moppingthe floor or picking updonations.

Housed in SpiegelDorm, the Clothing Co-op

provides a wide variety of new and gently-used clothing for men, women andchildren. Kitchen supplies, bedding, somefurniture and home decorating items arealso available. There is no charge for anyitem in the Clothing Co-op.

Food, clothing and monetarydonations are always accepted andappreciated.

Student CommonsKnown to most students,

faculty and staff as the StudentCommons, the upper level ofCraemer Hall offers a place torelax between classes or after along day. Video games, a pooltable, ping-pong and a big screentelevision provide the focus forsocial interaction for the entireseminary community.

WambsganssGymnasium

The gymnasium wasnamed after theWambsganss family whowas very supportive ofprograms on campus. Thefamily produced twopastors for The LutheranChurch—Missouri Synod.The gymnasium wasnamed after the family dueto their third son who wasa professional baseballplayer for the ClevelandIndians. During the 1920World Series against the BrooklynDodgers, he completed the first unassistedtriple play in World Series history.

Aside from the athletic courts, thegymnasium also houses a weight room

and fitness center that are open to theseminary community. BehindWambsganss Gymnasium, the seminaryhas an all-weather track, nine soccer fieldsand the Enter the Biblical WorldPlayscape.

Enter the Biblical World Playscape In May 2009, the seminary

community, along with friendsfrom the Fort Wayne area, cametogether to build a new playscape.The biblically-themed play areaincludes swings, slides and even achild-sized climbing wall. Thethemed areas include Noah Ark,Daniel and the Lion’s Den, Jacob’sLadder and much more. Theseminary is pleased to offer thefamilies of our community a placeto play and celebrate one of thegreatest gifts given us by God—family and children.

Loehe Hall One of two classroom buildings on

campus, Loehe Hall was named afterJohannes Konrad Wilhelm Loehe, pastorof a small Bavarian church in Germany.Although he never left Germany, Loehewas one of the founders of the seminary inFort Wayne. Moved by FriedrichWyneken’s plea for church workers in1842, he recruited, financed, trained andsent hundreds of pastors and teachers forservice on the American frontier. As thelargest building on campus, Loehe Hallhouses small and large tiered lecturerooms, the Distance Learning Lab, threemulti-media classrooms, offices, themailroom, the bookstore and is home tothe Arthur and Hermine Just TeachingChapel. Loehe Hall is connected toWyneken Hall by a tunnel.

Wyneken Hall The second of the two classroom

buildings is named after Friedrich ConradDietrich Wyneken, the third founder ofthe Fort Wayne seminary and the secondpresident of the LCMS. In 1844 he tutoredtwo pastoral students in his home. Thesetwo men were to be the first students ofConcordia Theological Seminary.

Arthur andHermine JustTeaching Chapel

Using funds from theestate of Arthur and HermineJust, parents of Dr. Arthur A.Just Jr., professor ofExegetical Theology, theformer art room of the seniorcollege has been outfitted toserve as a working laboratoryfor worship and preaching courses. In addition to a full chancel setting with altar, pulpitand lectern, state-of-the-art electronic equipment has been installed in order to record andreview students as they lead a service or preach a sermon, enabling faculty to provideimmediate feedback in the training of students.

The largest mosaic on campus,entitled Christ in Judgment, wasalso created by Siegfried Reinhardt.

The work occupies the entire wall in thefoyer between the Wyneken Hallclassrooms and the faculty office hallwayoverlooking the upper plaza.

The figure of Christ in judgment isseated upon a half moon with seven starswhich symbolize the seven candles beforeGod in Revelation. In His hands are thescales of judgment and the orb of theworld dominated by the cross whichsignifies His sacrifice for the redemptionof mankind. The dominant cross in thecenter of the design contains the Chi Rho and the words from the Te Deum:

We believe that Thou shalt come to be ourJudge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thyservants whom Thou hast redeemed with

Thy precious blood.

On the left of the cross are thetraditional symbols of the Incarnationincluding a star and lily, while the eggsymbolizes the origin of new life in Christ.The crown of thorns, of course,symbolizes the passion of Christ.

On the right of the cross are thesymbols of the resurrection and ascensionsymbolized by a stylized tomb for theburial of Christ, the red flame for Hisdescent into hell, the banner of victoryover death in the resurrection and thewinged bird symbolizing Christ’sascension.

New Testament Evangelist Shields—Wyneken Hall

St. John’s GospelThe eagle is the symbol of St. John the Evangelist because he rises tothe greatest and most sublime heights of spirituality in his Gospel(Ezekiel 1:10, Revelation 4:7).

St. PhilipThe symbols present relate to St. Philip’s missionary work andmartyrdom. The pilgrim’s staff on the right reminds us that hiswitnessing carried him to Phrygia and Galatia, where he wascrucified and dispatched with a spear.

St. MatthewThree bags are reminiscent of the apostle’s former occupation as atax collector.

St. MatthiasSt. Matthias preached the Word largely in Judea where he waseventually martyred by decapitation, represented here by the battle ax.

St. James, the LesserThe instruments of martyrdom are depicted. St. James was thrownoff of the temple in Jerusalem, but survived the fall and askedforgiveness for his enemies. According to tradition, the enragedpeople began to stone him. A fuller then beat him to death with hisbat. His body was then sawn asunder.

St. ThomasDuring his activities in India, St. Thomas is said to have built a churchin India with his own hands, symbolized here by the square. Thespear, wielded by a pagan priest, ended his life after he had beenstoned and riddled with arrows.

St. BartholomewThe cruel death of St. Bartholomew by flaying (hence the knives),crucifixion and finally decapitation is depicted on this shield.

St. Luke’s GospelDue to his detailed account of the Lord’s sacrificial work, St. Luke’sGospel is portrayed by the winged ox, the symbol of highest sacrifice(Ezekiel 41:10, Revelation 4:7).

St. Mark’s GospelSince his Gospel emphasizes the power and miracles of the Lord,

St. Mark’s symbol is the winged lion (Ezekiel 1:10, Revelation 4:7,

Mark 1:3).

St. JamesThe scallop shell depicts St. James’ travel and missionary activities;

the sword of his martyrdom at the hands of Herod.

St. Andrew A great boat hook reminds us that St. Andrew was a fisherman by

trade and a fisher of men by calling. He is said to have died on a

cross in satire, known today as St. Andrew’s cross.

St. Peter The keys are the most traditional symbol of this apostle. They refer

to Matthew 16:19, when the Lord imparts to His apostles,

represented by St. Peter, the power to bind and loose, to open and

close the Kingdom of Heaven.

St. Jude The ship symbolizes St. Jude’s missionary voyages with Simon. The

exact manner of his death is uncertain but it is believed that he was

crucified on an inverted cross.

St. Simon A fish resting upon a Bible shows Simon as a fisher of men through

the Gospel.

St. John This symbol reminds us of the unsuccessful attempt to poison

St. John. Tradition has it that a serpent rose from the deadly cup as

the apostle was about to drink it.

St. Matthew’s Gospel The principal focus of St. Matthew’s Gospel is upon our Lord’s

humility and humanity. Therefore, this symbol depicts a man. The

wings and nimbus testify to the exaltation of the human nature in

the Lord (Ezekiel 1:10, Revelation 4:7, Matthew 1:1-17).

Luther Statue

Martin Luther, themonk who tried toreform the Roman

Catholic Church by preachinga doctrine of salvation by faithrather than works, is depictedin this statue near theentrance to campus on MartinLuther Drive.

The Luther Statue wasfirst unveiled on theSpringfield campus on May26, 1957. Since then it hasbeen a representative icon ofConcordia TheologicalSeminary.

The statue was createdby Friederich Adolf Soetebierof Germany, stands over 12feet high and weighs morethan two tons. Soetebier chosea young portrait of Lutherbecause the statue wouldstand on the campus of aninstitution training young menfor the ministry of theLutheran church. The finelymodeled face is a combinationof two pictures of Luther byLucas Cranach the Elder. Thelines of the entire statue drawattention to the face.

The body of the statue is clad inconventional monk’s garb. As Luther inlife walked very erect, so the figure ofLuther stands up boldly. His hands are thesensitive hands of a scholar, molded fromcasts taken of Luther’s hands after hisdeath. Luther is firmly grasping the Bible

to his heart, yet it is open for the world tosee the Word of God.

Installed at the base of the LutherStatue are four cornerstones brought toFort Wayne from the Springfield campus.The cornerstones are from Craemer Halland Van Horn Hall; the gymnasium; andWessel Hall, a classroom building.

Dormitories Sixteen smaller buildings, originally

designed as residence halls, are groupedin village clusters of three or fourbuildings per cluster. Each dorm has itsown lounge, fireplace, small chapel andcan house 17 individuals in single rooms.When discussing the construction of thedorms, Eero Saarinen stated, “… wewanted to make the greatest impact …with the least expenditure. By extremelycareful utilization of every square foot, wereached a desirable end: groups of 36students live together on staggered floorsin buildings which are no bigger than alarge house. We hoped that this intimatehousing would encourage realstudent responsibility for thegroup within each house.”

The dorms are namedfor significant individuals whohad an impact on our churchand seminary. Early Church:Ambrose, Athanasius,Augustine and Jerome.Reformation: Brenz,Bugenhagen and

Melanchthon. Post-Reformation: Calov,Chemnitz, Gerhard and Jonas. ConcordiaTheological Seminary Professors:Albrecht, Engelder, Naumann, Pieper andSpiegel.

Since the seminary has much lessneed for residence halls than did thesenior college, the seminary has convertedsome into offices and the Clothing Co-op.
