Get to know Windows Search (Windows 7 Users)

When you need to file a specific set of files on your computer, finding them in Windows 7 is a lot different from how it was in Windows XP. By now, everyone should be familiar with the new Start Menu and universal search box as it works great and was a big improvement over the Windows XP UI.

You know it's in there somewhere: that file your boss needs that you know is hiding in your computer, but you don’t have a clue where to start looking. With Windows 7, there are no more lost files because Windows Search makes tracking down files, folders, programs, and photos a breeze. You can find nearly anything by using the search box on the Start menu or in any open window.

Get to know Windows Search http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/explore/search Pinpoint virtually anything on your PC with Windows Search Windows Search is better than ever—watch this video to see it in action. (0:50)

Using the Start menu or Search box The search box on the Start menu is usually the first place you’ll want to look for what you need. You can use the search box on the Start menu to find files, folders, programs, and e-mail messages that are stored on your computer. J ust click the Start button, and then start typing in the search box. As you start typing, items will appear on the Start menu that match the text that you typed.

If you know that a file is somewhere in a particular folder or library—such as Documents or Pictures—use the search box. You’ll see the search box at the top of every folder or library. J ust start typing in the search box and the current view will filter based on the text you type. Once you see the file you’re looking for, stop typing and open the file. No more digging

through folders and subfolders. J ust type a few characters and you’re there. Click the Start button , and then type a word or part of a word in the search box.

Search results appear as soon as you start typing in the search box. As you type, items that match your text will appear on the Start menu. The search results are based on text in the file name, text in the file, tags, and other file properties.

Save a search If you regularly search for a certain group of files, it might be useful to save your search. Watch this video to learn how to save a search (0:48) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Save-a-search

A General Theory of Productivity

What makes people productive in general:

Productivity = (Creative Energy + Focus + Motivation + Aptitude + Ideal Time) / (Difficulty + Distractions)

• Create habits that increase the enablers.• Figure out why we’re productive at “weird”

times.• Examine the tasks that we do and plan ideal

times to work. • Plan around or minimize distractions. • Simplify complex tasks.

PRODUCTIVE CAPACITY = the amount of productivity that you’re capable of in a given amount of time.

Identify the times when you are most focused, the most creative, and can get more done in less time – Maximize the use of that time – get rid of distractions!!

Heatmapping

• Red: This is where productive capacity is the highest. • Orange: This level of productive capacity is the

waystation between creative awesomeness and merely puttering along.

• Yellow: This level of capacity is the idle status. Some productive work can be done, but it’s not going to be high-level, lose-track-of-time type of productivity.

• Green: At this level, I’m spending more energy trying to keep working than actually doing the work itself. Creativity, motivation, or focus is pretty much gone.

• Gray: Hopefully I’m asleep at this level.
