4APRESENTAO DO ESCRITRIOOFFICE PRESENTATION
Unlike a traditional practice, CAMPO
strives to serve as a collaboration
platform for extremely motivated
professionals who seek above all to
engage architecture, urban planning
and landscape design through their
complex and multi-disciplinary
juxtapositions. It has been a key concept
to the practice that design be it the
design of entire cities or of a small
part of it is fundamentally the result
of a paradoxical process of debate,
a conclusion of both converging and
diverging ideas.
With an international team of
experienced professionals in
architecture, building technology,
project management, urban planning,
landscape design and environmental
planning, CAMPO is able to develop
projects that are both economically
efficient and innovative. Operating
within a highly collaborative framework
of fragmented authorship, CAMPOs
team structure does not follow ordinary
top-down hierarchies, which allows
for a high performance of reflexive
production.
CAMPO strives to set itself apart from merely
commercial practices through a continuous
engagement on processes of rigorous critical
thinking that reflect directly onto the qualities
of its work methodology and production.
This condition led to the development of a
very particular design methodology in the
practice, one that considers a more horizontal
relationship within its team and with its
clients. In this context, CAMPO aims at
making a contribution towards understanding
architecture and urbanism as tools for the
development of potentials rather considering
them merely as sets of strict limitations and
rules.
The offices working methods involve a
distinct kind of critical positioning, one that
synchronizes direct action with intensive
conceptual research and client collaboration.
The different scales from architectural
details to planning decisions are dealt
within constant cycles of approximation.
Thus, the team is able to promote direct
design and strategic responses to different
stimuli from the urban and natural
environments. Recognizing the transient
nature of our contemporary cities, the office
understands the expanded boundaries of
architectural and urban design as trans-
disciplinary fields.

Due to the amplitude of CAMPOs scales
of action which is able to provide
answers to a wide variety of queries,
from interior design to urban planning
it was necessary to implement
appropriate project management and
methodology tools to deal with different
levels of design complexities. Since its
creation, CAMPO has heavily invested
in setting its physical, operational
and human resources structures.
From these investments, and from the
previous experience of its founders in
coordinating highly complex projects,
CAMPO has developed an exclusive
management system called CAMPO-SIS.
CAMPO-SIS
Developed as a management system
for the office, CAMPO-SIS unifies the
policies for internal organization of the
practice, its IT system and its projects.
CAMPO-SIS follows the principles set
down by ISO 9001:2008 for integrated
quality management systems, for which
the practice will be soon certified.
In order to guarantee efficiency and
competitive fees in the execution of
our services, CAMPO-SIS follows the
following presets: standardization of all
key organizational processes; ability for
monitoring and measuring its services;
verification of performance indexes;
maintenance of the adequate registries

9necessary to guarantee the traceability
of its services; implementation of quality
inspection and the use of the appropriate
corrective actions whenever required;
among others.
All employees can easily access this
quality management system through the
offices intranet system. Training sessions
are held regularly, when every employee
receives a set of reference manuals
with step-by-step instructions on how
the system operates. This provides a
consistent and professional approach
and gives clients the assurance of a
clear and manageable set of processes
and procedures within the office and
that data is handled with care. Regular
revisions to the quality system are made
through carefully controlled procedures
to ensure its continuous enhancement.
Also, the system is dynamic and flexible,
allowing it to be adapted to the specific
needs of a client or of a specific project.
This guarantees the professionalism
of our services and the appropriate
deployment of staff.
IT System and Data Security
In order to ensure the maximum level of
data security and access speed, CAMPO
possesses an IT system that undergoes
constant updates and upgrades. At
this moment, the office counts with 12
high-performance graphic work stations
(PC), all equipped with Intel i7 multi-core
processors and 1Gb Ge-Force graphic
boards running on 64-bit Windows 7
Ultimate systems. The office is also
equipped with 3 PC notebooks and 1

The main goal of this study is the
transformation of the former Hotel
Nacional, which remains closed
since 1995, into a residential building
above a commercial podium. The
proposal deals with some architectonic
principles present in Niemeyers
original design, such as the formal
pureness, independent structure,
modulation and radial partition. For
each matrix-apartment (defined by a
certain number of modules) there are
many partition and layout proposals.
Kitchens and bathrooms were located
by the core of the building, taking
advantage on the existing shafts.
Externally, sliding aluminum panels
guarantee the thermal comfort of the
units, without hindering the view or the
pureness of the volume. Plus, they give
the abandoned building a new sales
image.

The design for IPHANs new HQ
originates from a dialogue between
concepts on the constitution of
place and some ideas which organize
Brasilias spatial ordering, such as the
mix of scales, geographical conditions
and the traffic system. In formal
terms, the proposal deals with the
aesthetic dimension of architecture.
By exploiting dialectical relations
between building and city, individual
and place, and time and space, the
design asserts itself as a plastic fact.
The central court constitutes its main
element. Void and place in one time, it
expresses the institutions requests for
decentralization and strength. At the
same time, it promotes an interesting
mix of scales. The trapezoidal court is
surrounded by three volumes, each of
them representing a macro-function of
the institution.

A celebration of relationships, this
is the main goal of this project. Not
only commercial relationships, but
of all sorts: exchange of experiences,
of knowledge, of practices, of
wisdom, even physical exchanges
with the environment, relationships.
In its urban dimension, the market
establishes relationships with the
city, its inhabitants and visitors.
Through expressive architectural
devices, positioned on the corners
(the cantilevered balcony and the
tower), attracts passers-by from the
surroundings; calls the attention of
pedestrians with a food court located
on the ground floor, directly linked
to the street; and, through diverse
openings (on the roof modules and
on the brick walls), allows controlled
access to natural lighting and
ventilation.

NITERI, RJThe Antnio Parreiras Museum was
created in 1941 and installed in
the former residence of Parreiras, a
famous landscape a portrait painter
from 19th century. However, the
residence was never properly adapted
to house a museum. This project aims
at correcting this inconvenience by
improving and optimizing the museum
for contemporary museological
requirements. In collaboration with
restoration and landscape architecture
studios, the museum spaces were
designed to ensure the full integration
of the museum internal paths and the
surrounding romantic gardens, also
created by the painter. The new annex
works both as an extension to the
exhibition areas and as an articulation
of the general circulation scheme,
providing easy access to several
services (caf, shop, administration,
among others). In this museum,
architecture and landscape are
strongly merged to offer a wide and
rich experience to its visitors. It will be
possible not only to fully experience
the work of Antnio Parreiras works
and the architectural complex designed
by Ramos de Azevedo (an important
Beaxu-Arts architect from So Paulo),
but also to comfortably wander and rest
in the museum gardens.

How is it possible to merge a
meditation and study atmosphere
with a context of intensive public
participation? The contemporary
libraries long for becoming protagonists
in urban public life, with a wide social,
cultural and politic representation,
not limited to being an access point
to information offering a quiet
environment suitable for concentration.
The concepts developed for the new
BPSC are motivated by the concept
of architecture as an equalization
device of opposite qualities demanded
by the nature of the contemporary
library. That equalization is given by
the graduated layout of the spaces in
two different levels of public uses and
closed spaces demanded by the new
BPSC.
Thus, the space is organized in a
vertical layout which prioritizes the
direct access to the ground level.
Lecture, reference and administration
spaces are located in the upper levels
and the collection storage in the
basement. The visual transition
between translucent ground level
and the opaque volumes in the
library is given by the openings in its
exterior opaque skin. This strategy
looks for giving to new BPSC an
iconic identity, able to impulse the
cultural conservation, diffusion and
participation of the Santa Catarina
inhabitants.

The project for MuMA was conceived
from a reflection on the transformations
in architecture and in how architecture
responds to the time lapse relating
with the surrounding environment. We
consider that the most efficient way to
engage sustainable architecture and
landscape design is by understanding
and exploring the potentials of the
transformation processes in a certain
territory. In this sense, the project
is grounded on the maximum reuse
of local resources available at the
site, combined with an integrated
selection of building processes and
the management of resources. Faced
as diverse living elements in constant
adaptation, the new gardens have
ecological and pedagogical functions,
which are complementary to the
Botanical Garden activities. MuMA has
the opportunity to put in practice wider
methods that understand architectural
and landscape interventions as one and
as a tool for renovation. The design of
the project emerges naturally from the
relations between building-landscape
and the flows, structuring each other
and turning their opposition diffuse.

Santa Cruz is very different (and far)
from the beach-culture extravaganza
Rio that we all know. Its almost
complete lack of devices for community
gathering and entertainment forced
the neighborhood to tacitly establish
very peculiar social dynamics. Social
engagement is only able to happen
when local communities gather around
collective events, such as a football
match. Football is not only about the
game in Santa Cruz. It means much
more than that. A football match
is the collective tour-de-force that
activates the whole community. And it
is precisely the intensification of this
local quality of football to catalyze
social empowerment that formed
the primary concept of this project
an urban device to boost flow and
permanence throughout the site.
The Training Center was designed as
a hybrid device. Its architectural and
landscape elements combine powers
to create a representative and lively
equipment for the community. It
creates flexible regimes of circulation
and uses, playing the role of portal,
shaded circulation and landmark.
Its position within the neighborhood
conveniently intermediates circulation
through pivotal local points. Through
this potential, we were able to turn the
site into an actual point of articulation,
becoming a place for circulation and
reunion.

Alongside the renovation of the
dressing and rehearsal rooms of the
SESC Quitandinha cultural center
(a former hotel designed in eclectic
German style), the program also
demanded the creation of a dance
studio in an underused area on
between of the theaters technical
ceiling and one of the hotels inclined
chalet-like roofs. Despite the roofs
rustic exterior, its interior is made of
inclined concrete slabs and beams,
which generate a compelling non-
orthogonal space. This space was
designed to offer flexible alternatives
for small dance presentations and
rehearsal. The existing beams were
used as the basis for the lighting
system, which provides diffuse lighting
while also existing side windows, in
triangular shape, give access to natural
lighting and ventilation.

The apartment was completely
remodeled in order to house a
four-people family. Its architecture,
with a typical floor plan from the
60s, presented a rather inadequate
organization of the circulation spaces
and bedrooms area. There were two
parallel corridors, one for the bedrooms
and the other to access the service area.
Their position obstructed both natural
lighting of the bedroom area and a
more enjoyable distribution of the
bedrooms. With the suppression of a big
portion of the service corridor, it was
possible to convert all the bedrooms
into suites (with ensuite WCs), and offer
natural lighting and ventilation to the
bedrooms circulation corridor. Besides
that, the access to the upper floor was
totally redesigned, creating an internal
hall with a double-height ceiling, with
natural lighting. The renovation also
embodied sustainable devices, such as
water heating by solar energy, and a
vertical garden on the top floor

With the challenge of comfortably
housing a five-people family, this
project had to considerably increase the
gross floor area of a 1,506.00 sqf house
built in a condominium of former
workers houses at the Jardim Botnico
neighborhood while maintaining the
qualities of its internal spaces and
patios. The plot had a narrow and
deep shape, which led the project to
open up internally to two patios: a
central one adjacent to the living and
dining rooms, and one in the back,
which integrates a garden to the service
areas while providing a nice view and
sunlight to the bedrooms and home
offices on the upper floors.
The original staircase was modified
in order to reach the new third floor,
created to be a space for working and a
terrace, taking advantage of the views
and local vegetation. A new skylight
allows natural lighting to reach the
stairs, which was designed to allow
indirect light to the interior spaces
while promote visual integration
between the floors. The new window
frames of the bedrooms are able to
control the intensity of light into
the rooms, and also play the role of
brises-soleils, defining the image od the
house to its exterior on its only external
faade. The garage was merged with
the living room, moving the main
access to the opposite side of the
house, facilitating the distribution of
internal flows.

Cabinda is an Angolan enclave between
the former Belgian and French Congos,
and is the second largest extractor of
petroleum in Africa (right after Nigeria).
After the end of the Angolan civil war,
the new government was able to invest
profits from petroleum extraction and
initiated numerous urban renewal
projects throughout its slums. A Vitria
Certa is the first slum in Cabinda to
benefit from this kind of project.
The plan takes all necessary measures
towards effective changes in the slums
urban situation by designing proper
infrastructure networks and a cohesive
system of public spaces. The circulation
routes within and toward the slums will
enable fast and comfortable connections
to other neighborhoods and to Cabindas
downtown area. The plan also includes
the construction of several new houses
for the families who lived in extremely
fragile conditions, and whose houses will
have to me removed due to construction
works.
The fundamental principle of the plan is
to explore the existing spatial framework
of the slum to the most, providing added
livelihood to public areas already in
use by the local population. Thus, the
social richness of their community is
not only maintained, but boosted. Many
public buildings are also being designed
and will play an important role in the
regeneration process.

The Colnia Juliano Moreira slum
was established in the area of a former
sugar mill farm that afterwards became
a mental care settlement. Today, there
are 8 different communities (favelas)
in the area, with approximately
25,000 inhabitants. Despite its urban
occupation, it still preserves some of
its rural aspects, which are extremely
valorized by its inhabitants. Historic
buildings from the sugar mill farm are
also a strong presence in the area, even
though they present very bad conditions
and inadequate occupation. This project
intends to create a new paradigm of
residential neighborhood, by balancing
historical and environmental aspects
and working with limited financial
possibilities. During the process of
the project the interaction between
all the actors involved, including the
community, was essential to determine
the final result.

In this project we take on the sites
monumentality with interventions that
are equally monumental, and use this
feature to domesticate and equalize
the current situation, not to clash
and contrast. This project takes the
concourse of the station out, and the
street in: exo- and endo-. It is based on
the redesign of the stations surrounding
urban fabric, closely interweaving it with
a large-scale and continuous canopy
that expands its main concourse,
connecting different areas on the same
level.
Aiming at energizing the connectivity
of its surrounding communities, the
station was set up to have a more active
local role. The new urban tissue around
the station allows for more diverse
connections between Downtown and the
neighborhoods on the hills (favelas). The
axis created by the canopy culminates at
two key-elements: a linear park climbing
up the hill, and an elevator cluster.

A sustainable future for Rio 2016
Olympic Park requires that we first
rebuild the green infrastructure on
which enduring human habitation
depends. By growing a robust green
infrastructure network, a wide range
of valuable ecosystem services can
be secured for future generations. We
might envision this network like a
mangrove trees branching roots growing
out toward the waters of Jacarepagu
Lagoon. These multi-purpose greenway
roots link the entire Olympic Park
with a world-class waterfront while
facilitating flows of people, water
and wildlife through a profoundly
productive landscape.
The main open space design
strategies for the Olympic Park can
be characterized in three key moves:
elevate, appreciate and integrate.
Elevate refers to the undulating
walkways that make up the Skywalk.
Emanating from the entrance plaza,
the Skywalks three main pedestrian
corridors branch out to the Olympic
venues, the Waterfront, and beyond.
Appreciate relates to the fundamental
importance of reconnecting park
visitors with the Jacarepagu Lagoon
and inspiring the restoration of Barras
lagoon complex and the surrounding
watershed. This profound appreciation
is stimulated along the Waterfront,
where a rich tapestry of islands, coves,
dunes and ponds offers diverse outdoor
experiences and adventures. Integrate
refers to the development of a Civic
Fabric of streets, walkways, plazas, and
gardens. Our approach to this web of
public realm interventions recognizes
the need for a potent yet flexible
organizing matrix to unify the diverse
architectural agendas which will come
to shape the sports venues and mixed-
use developments.
