Campaign Leader Pre- Work Pre-Work 1 (Time: 20 minutes) All the work that you put in as Campaign Leader is ultimately aimed at ensuring that we get the best leaders to teach our kids. But who are these people we are looking for? Why do we need leaders in the classroom? To get a better perspective on the work we do at Teach For India, here is a peek into three Teach For India classrooms of 2012 Fellows - Nallika, Ashwath and Avantika. To view this video please click here. After viewing the video, please answer the questions given below: 1. Is this what you were expecting from a low income classroom anywhere in India? If your answer is ‘No’, how is it different from what you were expecting? Response: 2. Do you see evidence of a shared vision or mission across the three classrooms? If so, can you give an example? Response: During my MBA at IIM Raipur, I was working on a short term project on the Mid-day meal scheme by Akshaya Patra. I had to visit different schools in and around Raipur. It was during these visits that I got to know a little about the level of teaching at the low income classrooms. I believe that while it is important to teach the children the basics of English vocabulary and Maths, it is more important to teach them values and instill in them a yearning to learn. They should be capable enough to lead their lives independently. Something common that I noticed in the students of all the 3 classrooms was that they were not simply mugging up what was being taught to them. The education imparted to them was helping them make decisions in their everyday life and frame their future. For example: One of the students said – “I like Norah Jones because… “. Another said – “I would like to become a paleontologist because ...” Another student said that he wanted to become like Sania Mirza or Kalpana Chawla. This shows that they not only know the current affairs and our history but are using that knowledge to make important decisions for their life.

  • Campaign Leader Pre- Work

    Pre-Work 1 (Time: 20 minutes)

All the work that you put in as Campaign Leader is ultimately aimed at ensuring that we get the best

leaders to teach our kids. But who are these people we are looking for? Why do we need leaders in the

classroom? To get a better perspective on the work we do at Teach For India, here is a peek into three

Teach For India classrooms of 2012 Fellows - Nallika, Ashwath and Avantika. To view this video please

click here. After viewing the video, please answer the questions given below:

    1. Is this what you were expecting from a low income classroom anywhere in India? If your answer

is No, how is it different from what you were expecting?

    Response:

    2. Do you see evidence of a shared vision or mission across the three classrooms? If so, can you

    give an example?

    Response:

During my MBA at IIM Raipur, I was working on a short term project on the Mid-day meal

scheme by Akshaya Patra. I had to visit different schools in and around Raipur. It was during

these visits that I got to know a little about the level of teaching at the low income

    classrooms.

I believe that while it is important to teach the children the basics of English vocabulary and

Maths, it is more important to teach them values and instill in them a yearning to learn. They

should be capable enough to lead their lives independently.

Something common that I noticed in the students of all the 3 classrooms was that they were

not simply mugging up what was being taught to them. The education imparted to them was

helping them make decisions in their everyday life and frame their future.

For example: One of the students said I like Norah Jones because . Another said I

would like to become a paleontologist because ... Another student said that he wanted to

become like Sania Mirza or Kalpana Chawla. This shows that they not only know the current

affairs and our history but are using that knowledge to make important decisions for their

    life.

  • 3. Teach For India believes in the principle of Teaching As Leadership which means that the skills

required to be an excellent leader are the very same skills required to be an excellent teacher.

From the video you just saw, how do you think being an exceptional teacher leads to being a

    strong leader?

    Response:

    Pre-Work 2 (Time: 20 minutes)

Please record yourself sharing Why do you want to be a Campaign Leader and what do you hope to

get out of this experience? Please also share What according to you is the Teach For India

Fellowship Program and why should people apply for it

You can record yourself and share the link below:

    Response:

From my limited experience in teaching students of grades 2, 3, 4 for a month I understood

that teaching a class of 40 students is not an easy thing to do. It requires

    1. Good communication skills - Only then children will listen to you

    2. Negotiation/ Persuasive skills Instances when we have to explain what is wrong and

    what is right

    3. Commitment

All of these are some of the traits required to be a strong leader. Thus, a teaching experience

invariably builds leadership qualities in a person.
